Interesting Statistical Comparisons

Every 9.74 days, there is an equivalent amount of casualties in Iraq & Afghanistan as September 11th.

There are 9.53 Virginia Tech shootings in Iraq & Afghanistan every day.

There is on average 305 daily civilian deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq.

In 14 days, as many Iraqi and Afghani civilians are killed as the entire amount of American military personnel killed since the invasion of Afghanistan in 2002 and the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 7 — More than 400 veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have turned up homeless, and the Veterans Affairs Department and aid groups say they are bracing for a new surge in homeless veterans in the years ahead.

Experts who work with veterans say it often takes several years after leaving military service for veterans’ accumulating problems to push them into the streets. But some aid workers say the Iraq and Afghanistan veterans appear to be turning up sooner than the Vietnam veterans did.

“We’re beginning to see, across the country, the first trickle of this generation of warriors in homeless shelters,” said Phil Landis, chairman of Veterans Village of San Diego, a residence and counseling center. “But we anticipate that it’s going to be a tsunami.”

Afghanistan has some of the world's worst health indicators, with an average life expectancy of 47.

About one in five children dies before its fifth birthday. Most women - particularly in rural areas - are never seen by a health professional during pregnancy and childbirth and the country has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world - nearly one in 50 births.

Most people lack access to safe drinking water and sanitary facilities. Disease, malnutrition and poverty are widespread and an estimated 6.5 million people are dependant on food aid.

Afghanistan continues to struggle as a state due to the many contending ethnic, religious and regional rivalries. Regional commanders, the illegal drugs trade and the continuing Taleban insurgency hamper the rule of law, development and aid efforts.

In 2006, more than 3,000 Afghans died in the violence, twice as many as in 2005 and more than in any other year since the 2001 fall of the Taleban, says Human Rights Watch.

About 99% of Afghans are Muslim - more than three-quarters of them Sunni.

US President George Bush and the Afghan leader, Hamid Karzai, have vowed to put an end to the Taleban in Afghanistan.

Mr Karzai insisted the Taleban were not a long-term threat.

He said: "They're not posing any threat to the institutions of Afghanistan.

But Mr Bush said he did not agree with remarks Mr Karzai made in an interview with CNN last Sunday, in which he said the Iranians were helping, rather than hindering, Afghanistan.

Should we Support a Draft?

In the end, however, I believe that the creation of a professional, all-volunteer military has been bad for American democracy, bad for our foreign policy, and thus bad for countless millions of people around the world who are subject to that policy. It has not made wars less likely.

1. Removed the decision to go to war from democratic deliberation

2. Greatly strengthened the Imperial Presidency, rather than weakening it

3. Provided an unaccountable army awaiting its Caesar (who has now arrived)

4. Militarized American foreign policy, by weakening public oversight and concern

5. Encouraged our leaders to carry out some of their overseas objectives by creating, funding and supporting non-state military actors to do our bidding (Al Qu'eda in Afghanistan being the best example), who have come back to bite us

6. Encouraged our leaders to privatize and outsource military and even diplomatic tasks to private companies beyond the reach of Congress

Although many persist in denying it, I continue to believe that what September 11, 2001 did was to plunge us headlong into nothing less than another world war.

What follows from this way of looking at the last five years is that the military campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq cannot be understood if they are regarded as self-contained wars in their own right. Instead we have to see them as fronts or theaters that have been opened up in the early stages of a protracted global struggle. The same thing is true of Iran. As the currently main center of the Islamofascist ideology against which we have been fighting since 9/11, and as (according to the State Department's latest annual report on the subject) the main sponsor of the terrorism that is Islamofascism's weapon of choice, Iran too is a front in World War IV. Moreover, its effort to build a nuclear arsenal makes it the potentially most dangerous one of all.
