Mr. Paul was supposed to be a memory by now. But in the Oregon primary last week, he won 15 percent of the vote, and the campaign appears to be growing into something beyond a conventional protest campaign. Some supporters have helped turn the outspoken congressman’s campaign into a colorful, loud sideshow with their guerrilla marketing tactics — self-penned Ron Paul anthems on YouTube, a Ron Paul blimp, T-shirts that portray Mr. Paul as a world-historical icon like Che Guevara.

“Man, I’ve straight hated politics, I’ve just never liked the authority,” explained Tommy Rayome, 19, a “musician-slash-cook-slash-whatever” from Lexington, Ky., who was one of more than 600 people who showed up at last week’s Ron Paul signing at a Borders bookstore in Louisville.

Thank goodness the family under siege this time around did not forcibly resist, because it could have ended violently, with many of those kids not just kidnapped, but killed. Is this not a lesson to learn from Waco – that outright resisting the police state will likely get you killed, and most Americans will still side against you? Indeed, it has been downright troubling how many Americans have unquestioningly swallowed the government’s line on this FLDS affair, just as they swallowed the government line on Waco.

The police state in this country is very real, and for any who do not understand the truly violent nature of law enforcement, it is worth considering the costs of non-compliance. The truly unique thing about Waco was not just that so many innocent people lost their lives. The unique thing was that people resisted.* And that’s why they lost their lives.

In his message to supporters on Friday, Dr. Paul declared his intention to continue campaigning, but with less intensity since, in the first place, “the chances of a brokered convention are nearly zero,” and in the second, he wants to put more effort into his own congressional campaign. He also promised, “I am committed to fighting for our ideas within the Republican party, so there will be no third party run.”

John McCain must have gone down on his knees to give thanks on hearing that. A Ron Paul third party candidacy would have given a home to the many, many conservative Republicans who cannot imagine voting for McCain. A Jan. 29 Rasmussen poll found that, for example, a third-party Ron Paul would get 11 percent of the vote in a McCain-Obama general election. Practically all of that 11 percent would come out of John McCain’s hide. As hard as the media and the Republican establishment have tried to ignore Paul, he remains a potent force.

The former head of the CIA's bin Laden unit Michael Scheuer appeared on yesterday's Hannity & Colmes to give his opinion about what candidate would be best at fighting the war on terrorism.

"I think both of them (McCain and Obama) are equally unable to cope with the threat represented by Osama bin Laden, al Qaeda, and the Islamists," Sheuer responded. "They really don't have a clue about what this war is about."

"They continue to tell Americans, 'These people are Islamo-fascists, and they hate us because of our freedoms,' and 'they hate us for our liberties.'

"What they hate us for is the unusually virulent strain of obsessive compulsive disorder that's present in the American governing class, and that's called interventionism. That's what the cause of this war is. And neither Mr. McCain, nor Mr. Obama, nor Mrs. Clinton, nor any of the rest of them who are in the campaign—except Mr. Paul, Mr. Kucinich perhaps—had that idea."

Their devotion and noticeable online enthusiasm had waned in recent weeks after Paul forced Mitt Romney from the race and then spent more time in his own district.

Starting last summer the seemingly spontaneous assembling of hundreds of thousands of Paul supporters, many new to politics, has been one of the more remarkable aspects of the current political season.

In December, the Paul campaign broke the online one-day fundraising record by taking in $6 million and made Paul the most successful GOP fundraiser in the fourth quarter with nearly $20 million in donations. And he was the only Republican candidate to increase his take during each quarter of 2007.

Montana Delegates Could Help Paul

If Romney does release Montana's delegates, all 25 should vote to nominate Ron Paul, said Ellen Finnegan, an organizer for the Missoula Ron Paul 2008 Meetup Group.

In the caucus, Paul won Missoula County and placed second in state with 25 percent of the vote to Romney's 38. John McCain won 22 percent and Mike Huckabee won 15 percent.

In 2007, Ron Paul also raised almost $89,000 in Montana, more than any other candidate, Republican or Democrat, according to the Federal Election Commission. Romney received less than half that, $41,500 in contributions from Montanans.

"If the people of Montana have any say, Ron Paul should get the delegates," Finnegan said.

Missoula's Ron Paul Meetup Group includes about 100 members, and they still support their candidate even though a nomination is far out of reach, said member Tim Danyo. Paul only has 16 delegates of the required 1,191 for nomination. Even so, Danyo says he believes Paul will stay in the race until the end.

What I miss most about youth — what I miss even more than the vigor and the energy and the excitement of getting up each day (and feeling good when you do!) — is that sunny optimism in the face of impossible odds. Life has a way of beating that out of you as it delivers one disappointment after another. The older you get, the less you expect from life. As The Gambler in the old Kenny Rogers song put it, "the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep".

But growing older is not without its compensations. With age comes wisdom, and with wisdom comes something that is even better than optimism: the ability to see the good that can come out of even the worst that life throws at you. As The Gambler said in the line just before the one quoted above, "every hand's a winner, and every hand's a loser".

Following a second place finish in the Republican caucus in Nevada, Texas Senator Ron Paul was his with a one-day internet cash infusion of $1.25 million, indicating his popularity may be showing signs of improvement. As the Republican primaries focused on Florida and further to the Super Tuesday primaries February 5, Paul has stayed his course on preaching returning responsible for many individual freedoms back to the states.

In Florida, Paul is realizing one of his best poll rankings, according to poll results posted at usaelectionpolls.com with six percent, slightly less than the seven percent held by former Tennessee Senator and actor Fred Thompson. The Republican focus on their religious roots helped split John McCain and Mike Huckabee in South Carolina's primary, but as the troupe moves further south, more eyes appear to be landing on the administration critic, Ron Paul.

Well, he's hanging in there. Not only that, but Rep. Ron Paul thumped two reputed Republican heavyweights in the Michigan primary -- former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Who'd have predicted that a couple of months ago?

Giuliani, you may recall if you can remember anything as distant as last summer, was the longtime GOP national front-runner in polls. He ran strongly against everybody in his party, even former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who won one last night, taking his home state from Sen. John McCain, who won there in 2000. Everybody wondered if anyone had a chance against the hero of 9/11, who defied standard Republican theocracy with his liberal social views.

But guess what? Ron Paul, the 72-year-old Texas congressman and ob-gyn who delivers babies and a strict view of the Constitution, beat Giuliani in Michigan. And beat him good. Not only that ...

In 2006, libertarians who were fed up with Republican excess either threw their support behind the Democrats or stayed home on Election Day, resulting in a wholesale victory for the Democratic Party as it took over both houses of Congress and a majority of governorships and state legislatures from the GOP.

There's no reason to expect libertarian-minded voters to play any less significant a role in the outcome this year, especially when they have a candidate in Ron Paul who is continuing to gain momentum for two important reasons: 1) libertarians finally have a candidate running on a major ticket who represents many of their views, and 2) there is no ideological difference between any of the leading Democrats or Republicans when it comes to the federal government – they all believe in the virtue of the paternalistic, centralized state; they merely differ in how it should run our lives.

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul won a straw poll this week held by an Arizona group representing young GOP entrepreneurs and business professionals.

The Republican Professionals Association conducted the poll this week.

Paul won the poll, with 80 percent of the vote, followed by Sen. John McCain of Arizona, with 12 percent. There were 515 votes cast, according to RPA.

McCain picked up the endorsement of the Tampa Tribune on Friday. He also has received a number of newspaper endorsements on the GOP side of the 2008 White House race.

Paul opposes the war and most government spending. He wants to dismantle the Internal Revenue Service and what he calls America's 'empire' abroad, including military bases and reducing foreign aid.

A Deep Breath

No one said this was going to be easy.

We are building a movement. This movement will be a conduit for electing small government / constitutionalist / pro non-interventionist foreign policy candidates for president, the senate, and house of representatives at the federal level and for the corresponding offices at the state and local levels.

I haven't given up on this campaign. I still think that we can do great things and still may win. I am planning on going to the GOP convention to cast my ballot for Ron Paul. If that doesn't happen this year, so be it. I am proud of Ron Paul and all of you. I have confidence that we will make the second (third?) American Revolution happen in our lifetime (let's get going I don't have as long as most of you do.).

Googlers stump in N.H. for Paul

After learning that Operation Live Free or Die volunteers were largely surviving on snack food, a local group called Ladies for Liberty volunteered to cook them meals twice a week. The rest of the time, there's a plentiful supply of potato chips, Indian takeout, and, in the refrigerator, Sam Adams beer.

In addition to having broad support online, Paul is by far the most popular Republican candidate among Google employees. He received $22,650 in contributions from them, according to Opensecrets.org, compared with a mere $2,300 that Googlers gave John McCain. They gave no contributions to Mike Huckabee or Mitt Romney.

Google employees, in fact, represent the single top contributor to Ron Paul's campaign. They narrowly beat out men and women in the U.S. Army and Navy, who are in second and third place, respectively.
