Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a highly infectious condition marked by an unstoppable urge to cough.

I just spent the past week visiting several colleges - Auburn, the University of Mississippi, Lake Forest and Williams - and I can report that the more I am around this generation of college students, the more I am both baffled and impressed.

I am impressed because they are much more optimistic and idealistic than they should be. I am baffled because they are so much less radical and politically engaged than they need to be.

One of the things I feared most after 9/11 - that my daughters would not be able to travel the world with the same carefree attitude my wife and I did at their age - has not come to pass.

Uproar over tax break for "big babies"

ROME (Reuters) - Italy's economy minister has sparked uproar by offering "big babies" a tax break if they let go of their mother's apron strings and left home.

More than a third of Italian men over the age of 30 live at home with their parents, a phenomenon blamed on sky-high apartment rents and bleak job prospects as much as a liking for mamma's cooking.

Economy Minister Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa offered to come to the rescue with a 1,000 euro ($1,411) tax break for 20- and 30-something Italians who rent.

He said the move was aimed at "bamboccioni," which evokes images of clumsy, overgrown male babies.

"We must send those we call 'big babies' out of the house," the minister told a Senate hearing on the 2008 draft budget.

"With the budget we'll help young people who don't marry and still live with their parents get out of the house."

"Dead" Venezuelan man wakes up during autopsy

BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- Morgue examiners in a Venezuelan hospital began their autopsy as usual but soon got a nasty shock: the "dead" man under knife started bleeding and woke up in excruciating pain, according to media reports Tuesday.

Carlos Camejo, 33, was declared dead after a highway accident and taken to the morgue, where examiners began the autopsy with an incision to Camejo's face, but realized something was wrong because the dead didn't bleed. They quickly stitched up the gash.

"I woke up because the pain was unbearable," Camejo told local paper El Universal.

When his grieving wife turned up at the morgue to identify her husband's body, she found her other half very much alive and with a newly stitched facial wound.

The report said hospital officials could not be reached immediately to confirm the events. But Camejo showed the newspaper his facial scar and a document ordering the autopsy.

A MEDICAL team has removed a life-threatening aneurysm from a patient's brain while awake, in what doctors are calling a world-first surgery.

The 77-year-old man is expected to speak about his experience of being conscious during brain surgery today.

The team at the Canberra Hospital, lead by Dr Vini Khurana, will also reveal details of their pioneering brain surgery procedure.

The man suffered from a life-threatening venous aneurysm, a large blister on a major vein in his brain, behind his right eye that was affecting his vision and likely to rupture.

US man charged with smuggling iguanas from Fiji in his prosthetic leg

LOS ANGELES - A man has been charged with stealing three endangered iguanas from a nature preserve in Fiji and smuggling them into the United States in his prosthetic leg.

Jereme James, 33, faces a single count of smuggling, according to a federal indictment returned Friday in Los Angeles. The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

Prosecutors say he stole the Fiji Island banded iguanas while visiting the South Pacific island in September 2002. He then brought the reptiles to the U.S. by hiding them in a special compartment he had constructed in his prosthetic leg, prosecutors said.

James came under scrutiny several years ago when someone informed U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials that he had several of the neon green iguanas, which are protected under an international treaty regulating trade in endangered species.

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. – The safety of implantable tracking chips in human beings is suddenly in focus with the revelation the devices could cause cancer, and that studies showing links to the disease were kept under wraps.

According to the Associated Press, despite the chips' approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, neither their maker nor federal regulators publicly mentioned a series of studies dating to the mid-1990s that found chip implants had "induced" malignant tumors in some lab mice and rats.

"The transponders were the cause of the tumors," Keith Johnson, a retired toxicologic pathologist, told AP as he explained the findings of a 1996 study he led at the Dow Chemical Co. in Midland, Mich.

Smoking Ups Dementia Risk, Dutch Researchers Say

Smoking raises your risk of developing dementia or Alzheimer's disease by 50 percent, according to researchers who tracked thousands of smokers and nonsmokers over age 55 for a period of seven years.

The authors found that smoking did not increase the risk of Alzheimer's for people who carried the gene for the disease, but did increase the risk for those who did not have the Alzheimer's gene.

HealthDay News reported Sept. 4 that study author Monique Breteler of Erasmus Medical Center noted, "Smoking increases the risk of cerebrovascular disease, which is also tied to dementia. Another mechanism could be through oxidative stress, which can damage cells in the blood vessels and lead to hardening of the arteries. Smokers experience greater oxidative stress than nonsmokers, and increased oxidative stress is also seen in Alzheimer's disease."

The study was published in the Sept. 4, 2007 issue of the journal Neurology.
