We've made a point of mentioning performance at nearly every opportunity lately, and it's time we expand on that a bit to fill in some details. We recently completed a series of benchmark tests that pitted Symlabs Virtual Directory Server against the two other leading virtual directories in the market, and the actual measured results from that testing not only back up our claim to the title of "fastest virtual directory server", it also lets us point how just how much faster we really are. Bear in mind that our products are built on a common core engine (it's possible this may also be true for others), so while we tested Symlabs Virtual Directory Server, the inference is that Symlabs LDAP Proxy delivers similar performance (but not necessarily all the same features).

What is Spin Welding?

The process of spin welding uses heat generated by rotational friction at the joint line to weld thermoplastic parts with rotationally symmetric joints. The spin welding machine applies pressure axially while rotating one part against its stationary mate, and the resulting friction generates heat that melts the parts together.

Advantages of the spin welding process include high quality permanent joints, hermetic seals, lower equipment costs, ease of assembly, energy efficient operation, no ventilation required, immediate handling, entrapment of other parts, far-field welding capability and no additional material requirements.

We’ve had the first of those warm fall days with a steady breeze and long, brown needles falling from the pines. But they aren’t going to take over the climate just yet. It’s also the beginning of the incredible Tahoe Indian Summer. This is the amazing time of year when “nobody’s” here, the days are still long, and the sun still powerful. For me, it’s the best time of year for golf, tennis, mountain biking and hiking. A dip in the Lake is as refreshing as one in May and some us call this the start to the fall surf season (more on that in another post).

It’s brings up one of the main concerns with ‘cloud’ computing… mainly, what happens when the cloud goes dark.

Cloud computing is sort of the generic term used for using someone else’s storage/processing power over the internet. Hotmail, Google Docs are a couple examples. All your information is stored on their server.

Now it’s a fairly safe bet that Google or Hotmail (microsoft) aren’t going out of business. However, it’s a much different story with smaller companies.

What Is Backwashing And What Is Its Purpose?

As dirt accumulates in the swimming pool filter bed, resistance to flow increases, which causes a reduction in water discharge to the pool. When the flow is insufficient for proper water circulation, it is required to clean the pool filter. This process is referred to as backwashing.

The correct backwash rate for a high-rate sand filter is the same as it was when the pool filter was in the “filter cycle” (15-25 gpm per square foot of the filter area). In rapid-rate sand filters the backwash rate must be between 12-15 gpm per square foot of filter area (which is 4-5 times greater than the average filter rate per square foot).
