We shared with you about Microsoft SideShow HERE, Microsoft basically adds Windows SideShow architecture allowing small PDA like devices that are attached to bags, Media Center remotes, laptop cases, in Windows Mobile Phone devices, etc, that provide snips of data from the parent computer like email, calendar, contacts, media, RSS, etc.

According to a developer that demonstrated prototypes to Texyt.com today, he states. Windows SideShow devices will start from about $80. The touchscreen handheld gadgets share many of the features of PDAs, smartphones, and media players like Apple’s iPod, but they connect wirelessly to a PC to send or receive data.

A high-end SideShow device with a slide-out Qwerty keyboard will cost approximately $150, said staff of Taiwan-based chip manufacturer, Winbond, which makes CPUs and other chips for the devices. A smaller device with a square 3.5-inch touch screen will cost ‘about $80′, they predicted.

One of the most dramatic extrasolar planetary discoveries of the year was announced this week; unfortunately, with little fanfare. Planet hunters uncovered a Neptune-sized planet orbiting a nearby star. This planet is close enough to its parent star that it’s extremely hot - above 250 degrees Celsius. And yet the intense pressure from gravity forces large quantities of liquid water into solid ice.

The planet was discovered orbiting the nearby M-dwarf star GJ 436 using the planetary transit technique. This is where a sensitive instrument called a photometer measures the periodic dimming and brightening of a star as a planet passes in front. In August 2006, astronomers captured the first hint of the planet using the Observatoire Francois-Xavier Bagnoud (OFXB) observatory in St-Luc Switzerland. It was then confirmed using the Euler 1.2m telescope at La Silla Observatory in Chile.

Color e-paper ebook reader announced by Fujitsu

Fujitsu issued a press release (useless unless you can read Japanese - and I can't), stating that they're going to release a colour e-ink reader, first discussed in another news post. The hardware looks quite nice, including the standard XScale ARM processor, an SD card slot, 802.11b/g, and a battery somehow 'rated' at 50 hours. Some of the less common hardware includes a stereo headpone jack, and the ability to play music from the SD card slot. Oh, and the screen is touch-sensitive!

So, of course, all this is too good to be perfect. The price, for one, is over $1000 per-reader (for ten readers, for testing purposes - presumably the final product will be slightly less expensive), for the small size. The large size more-than-doubles that price. It's also running "Japanese Windows CE 5.0" (apparently something different from Windows Mobile), and will only be available in Japan.

Iowa senator tells colleagues to stop playing games

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports on freshman Iowa State Senator Bill Heckroth, who chastised his fellow senators last week for playing games like Solitaire on state-issued laptops during floor debate. Heckroth, who noticed the illicit game-playing while watching proceedings from the gallery with visiting family, worried that the gaming might hurt the reputation of the senators among those watching from above. "I just got to thinking that just doesn't look real professional," he said on the senate floor last Thursday. "You hear enough bad things about being a politician."

Veteran lawmakers were relatively blasé about the problem "Freshmen are always shocked by what goes on," said senate minority leader Mary Lundby. "Next year he won't even mention it. He'll probably be playing games."

As I write this I’m sitting in my new house, which, thus far, has nearly bare walls, so I was excited to notice that a new community site ArtFlock — devoted to buying and selling art online — just launched. Actually, after a bit of reading on the site’s blog, I discovered that ArtFlock is the new name for Artists Online which has been around for a while.

Using ArtFlock, artists can display and sell their art, and visitors can browse through collections and artists, as well as search for specific artists or types of art. Since ArtFlock is not just a marketplace but also a gallery of sorts there’s a handy button at the top of the page that can limit results to show only works that are for sale.

ArtFlock has most of the interactions you’d expect from a social networking site in this day and age including user ratings, tag browsing, favorites (called My Gallery) and more. Interestingly the site doesn’t have a “similar artists” features, something the site’s blog says is a deliberate choice.
