I always wondered if the 80/20 rule (see below) applies to social networking internet activities.

Will 80% of the blogs posted by 20% of the blogers?
Will 20% of the clippers (bglogmarks, clipmarks) clip 80% of the articles?
And o on.

I wonder if somebody ever analyzed this issue. Just being curious as to how far the 80/20 ruke can be applied.

The Pareto principle (also known as the 80-20 rule, the law of the vital few and the principle of factor sparsity) states that, for many phenomena, 80% of the consequences stem from 20% of the causes. Business management thinker Joseph M. Juran suggested the principle and named it after Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, who observed that 80% of income in Italy went to 20% of the population. It is a common rule-of-thumb in business; e.g., '80% of your sales come from 20% of your clients.'

Soukoban (144 KB) is a classic brain game for all ages. The objective is to push given cubes to a certain position in a warehouse.

PocoMan (1045 KB) is another brain game like Soukoban with a bit more complicated mazes.

Triogical (4156 KB) is a free (freeware), puzzle-type game. Collect all Klondikes by using 3 robots - pusher, grabber and zapper (99 maps).

IQ Tests

IQ test 1 (243 KB) - this test has two objectives: showing the features of Macromedia Flash and evaluating intelligence (only an estimation). 27 static and animated graphical questions are targeted at logical sequences, analogies, memory, comprehencing principles etc. I stress again, the questions are mainly for mental stimulation, and not for a real PhD certified score. More serious tests are on the links to IQ tests page.

IQ test 2 (248 KB) - this second part offers 27 harder questions in the field of cryptoanalysis and logistics.

IQ test 3 (222 KB) - the last part is about numerical and picture sequences. Reults of these three tests are not 100% accurate. Although they can be close to truth.

1. WASP

Available from University College London, written by Mark Huckvale. Probably the simplest and easiest to use. It's ideal for introducing students to acoustic analysis on computer, and it takes up very little disk space.

2. SIL Speech Analyzer

Quite easy to use, and capable of delivering more functions than WASP. The display format is more flexible, and it's easy to change between monochrome and colour spectrograms, and to set the frequency range displayed. The pitch-tracker works well, and can be set to be restrained within a particular frequency range. The labelling of segments can be done with proper IPA symbols selected from IPA Chart-type displays. There is a quite a lot of other phonetic software that can be downloaded and used in conjunction with this. Students like it, in my experience. The only drawbacks are that positioning the cursors is awkward, requiring some practice, and the package is not as flexible as some others in allowing you to design your own functions.

3. SFS

This is the "big brother" of WASP. It is extremely powerful, well documented and very regularly updated and improved. As well as analysis, it will also let you do speech synthesis and experiments with speech recognition. Beginners tend to find it intimidating, however, and on the whole it is not recommended for people with limited computing skills. For the suitably skilled, it can be used more or less as a programming language, and many programs can be "pipelined" together so that a particular research application can be "tailor-made". There is a users' email support group that gives helpful advice.

As we’ve seen before, getting your inbound email under control will give you a huge productivity boost, but what about all the emails you send? If you want to be a good email citizen and ensure the kind of results you’re looking for, you’ll need to craft messages that are concise and easy to deal with.

First: Understand why you’re writing

Before you type anything into a new message, have explicit answers for two questions:

Why am I writing this?

What exactly do I want the result of this message to be?

Get what you need

Although the possible topics and content of messages are theoretically endless, I’d propose that there are really just three basic types of business email.

Providing information - “Larry Tate will be in the office Monday at 10.”

Requesting information - “Where did you put the ‘Larry Tate’ file?”

Requesting action - “Will you call Larry Tate’s admin to confirm our meeting on Monday?”

Brevity is the soul of…getting a response

It’s completely depressing to check your email at 4:55 in the afternoon to discover a gothic novel of a message waiting for you, spilling down your screen the distance of 2 or 3 scrolling pages. It’s certainly not the kind of thing that excites the desire to engage and respond. I mean just look at all that!

What’s the action here?

If your message includes any kind of request—whether for a meeting, a progress update, a pony ride, or what have you—put that request near the top of the message and clearly state when you will need it. Do not, under any circumstances, assume that your overwhelmed recipient will take the time to sift through your purple prose for clues about what they’re supposed to be doing for you.

01. When you call us to have your computer moved, be sure to leave it buried under half a ton of postcards, baby pictures, stuffed animals, dried flowers, bowling trophies and children's art. We don't have a life, and we find it deeply moving to catch a fleeting glimpse of yours.

02. Don't write anything down. Ever. We can play back the error messages from here.

03. When an I.T. person says he's coming right over, go for coffee. That way you won't be there when we need your password. It's nothing for us to remember 700 screen saver passwords.

04. When you call the help desk, state what you want, not what's keeping you from getting it. We don't need to know that you can't get into your mail because your computer won't power on at all.

05. When I.T. support sends you an E-Mail with high importance, delete it at once. We're just testing.

06. When an I.T. person is eating lunch at his desk, walk right in and spill your guts right out. We exist only to serve.

07. Send urgent email all in uppercase. The mail server picks it up and flags it as a rush delivery.

08. When the photocopier doesn't work, call computer support. There's electronics in it.

09. When something's wrong with your home PC, dump it on an I.T. person's chair with no name, no phone number and no description of the problem. We love a puzzle.

10. When an I.T. person tells you that computer screens don't have cartridges in them, argue. We love a good argument.

11. When an I.T. person tells you that he'll be there shortly, reply in a scathing tone of voice: "And just how many weeks do you mean by shortly?" That motivates us.

Firefox Tops 300 Million Downloads But Loses Market Share

It's not clear from a recent survey whether Firefox lost market share to Microsoft or Apple.

Mozilla's Firefox Web browser, in all its versions, has been downloaded more than 300 million times since its initial release on Nov. 9, 2004, but last month for the first time in more than year, it lost market share.

In January, Firefox saw its share of the browser market drop to 13.67% from 14% in December, according to Web metrics vendor Net Applications. During this same period, Microsoft Internet Explorer reversed a year of consistent decline, to reach 79.75% market share, a gain of 0.11 percentage points from the previous month.

It's not clear from Net Applications' numbers whether Firefox lost market share to Microsoft or Apple. In January, Apple's Safari browser also gained market share, rising to 4.7% from 4.24% in December. Netscape, Opera, and other browsers all showed declines in January.

On Jan. 8, Microsoft said that Internet Explorer 7 had been downloaded 100 million times. In a post on the IE blog, Tony Chor, an IE group program manager, said that more than 25% of all visitors to sites in the United States were using IE 7 and that "We expect these numbers to continue to rise as we complete our final localized versions, scale up AU [Automatic Updates] distribution, and with the consumer availability of Windows Vista on January 30, 2007."

At InformationWeek.com, Firefox enjoys significantly greater usage than indicated by Net Applications' figures. During the month of January, traffic breakdowns to our sites show visitors were using: 34.8% Microsoft IE 6; 20.1% Microsoft IE 7; 19.2% Mozilla Firefox 2.0; 10.2% Safari 2.0.4; 10% Mozilla Firefox 1.5; and 5.7% Other.

ClipClip revives Clipmarks Debate

My previous post was recently clipped to a new service called ClipClip. As Darren wrote last December in regard to Clipmarks, I’m curious to know when a clip is more than a bookmark, especially since ClipClip reproduces the post template n’ all, includes existing Freshblog comments, and offers the opportunity for users to add comments that will sit on the complete reproduced post, not on the original.

So… Clipping. What’s up with that? Here’s some ideas for discussion pro & con:

What if all clips sat in a private user’s account, & were not publicly visible?

What if the ClipClip default “whole page is bookmarked when no text is selected” was actually “nothing is bookmarked when no text is selected?

How about an intro phrase for the link at the top of the page. “This content clipped from….” or similar.

What about clip technology that doesn’t reproduce the template? Is that more acceptable? Clipmarks appears (at least based on my quick refresher visit) to work that way.

Is there a Search-Engine penalty here, since this is 100% duplicate content at a different URL?

Where’s the benefit of a “clip” over a web-based bookmark w/ limited notes, such as those at Del.icio.us?

What if there was a way (either on the source page or the clipping service) to limit the amount of a post that could be clipped, so that it was truly an extract, & not the whole thing?

Clipmarks looks a bit like Google Reader now, with a nav-pane of multiple posts on the left and a window that displays the whole text on the right. This seems to me to be a bit more feed-reader-like than ClipClip, although of course the “river of news” that is being fed is a composite of multiple users’ selected content, rather than the account-holder’s selected feeds.
