war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base

is nothing but an act of murder."

Scientists in Britain believe that the reason there are only two sexes is due to a bacterial infection our ancestors caught about two billion years ago.

There is no end to the diversity of life on Earth, so why most species have only two sexes has been puzzling scientists around the world for many years.

Mushrooms have as many as 36,000 sexes, and a strange growth called slime mould has about thirteen. But these are rare exceptions to the almost universal rule that life on earth is divided into two sexes.

An evolutionary mystery

Mushrooms have 36,000 sexes

This presents an evolutionary mystery; If we had a hundred sexes, and could mate with any one of them, our chance of finding a partner in our surrounding environment would be 99%.

Professor Laurence Hurst, of Bath University, England, explains the problem: "For example, imagine that you are in a disco and the lights have gone out. You're looking for somebody to go home with and the law is the first person you bump into is the person you choose.
If there are only two sexes, then on average, half the time the person you meet is not going to be a potential mate."

Bacteria in the genes

So the question is why we only have two sexes, if it appears to make the survival of species more rather than less difficult. Professor Hurst believes it's all down to how we inherit a particular set of genes, called mitochondrial genes.

Half of the people you meet will not be a potential mate

Unlike the genes carried in the nucleus or centre of our cells, mitochondria are found in material outside the nucleus. And unlike genes in the nucleus, mitochondrial DNA can copy itself very rapidly. Professor Hurst, speaking at the Festival of Science in Sheffield, believes mitochondrial genes are the remains of a bacterial infection caught by our distant ancestors.

It's tentative name is "Administratium."

With1 neutron, 12 assistant neutrons, 75 deputy neutrons, and 111 assistant deputy neutrons, it has an atomic mass of 312. They are held together by a force called morons, surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons. I t has no electrons,so it is inert. However, it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A small amount of Administratium causes a reaction to take over four days when it would usually take a second.

Administratium half-life is 3 years; it doesn't decay but undergoes a reorganization. In fact, its mass will increase over time, since each reorganization causes some morons to become neutrons forming isodopes.

This moron-promotion process leads scientists to believe that Administratium is formed if morons reach a certain quantity in concentration. This hypothetical quantity is known as "Critical Morass."

Tags: science, scientific, discovery, physics, humor

<clipSource>http://mail.google.com/mail/?view=page&name=gp&ver=sh3fib53pgpk</clipSource>

ZEN - Visually rich, funny, intuitive, basic introduction

clipped by: kwonsu

Clip Source: www.do-not-zzz.com

That's the findings of a new study published in the latest issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The randomized, controlled study looked at the effects of the Brain Fitness Program, a computer-based set of exercises. It was developed by Posit Science Corporation, a San Francisco company that promotes brain health. Researchers tested 182 people aged 60 to 87. They gave each participant a standardized, clinical cognitive assessment before and after the study. The experimental group worked on the brain exercises in their homes for about 8 weeks. One control group was given no special instruction while another control group watched educational DVD's.

Study results show that 93% of the participants working on the brain exercises had an increase in the rate of processing information, meaning they would likely think and act faster. The average participant was 71, but after the training was able to process information reliably at the speed of someone in their twenties.

"Even more important," according to study co-author Dr. Henry Mahncke, "These improvements generalized to standardized measures of memory that are related to real life functions. It's noteworthy when gains at specific tasks generalize to things that matter in daily living. The average change on these measures showed a clinically and statistically significant improvement in memory, and many participants showed gains equal to the amount of decline that usually happens over 10 years of aging."

Follow up tests indicated that the improvements last beyond the training.

The Brain Fitness Program is based on brain plasticity, the brain's ability to change throughout life if provided with the right kind of exercises. This means mental functions such as memory can be improved at any age.

Tags: people, science, mind, brain, fitness

<clipSource>http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/medicalnews.php?newsid=48786</clipSource>

New Phenomena on the Sun

clipped by: Djiezes

Clip Source: www.nasa.gov

New Phenomena on the Sun

A NASA Science Update at 1 p.m. EDT Wednesday, March 21 will be held to discuss never-before-seen observations from an international mission studying the sun.

For NASA TV streaming video, downlink and schedule information, visit:

http://www.nasa.gov/ntv

The Hinode spacecraft, Japanese for "sunrise," launched in September 2006 to study the sun's magnetic field and how its explosive energy propagates through the different layers of the solar atmosphere. This new element has been tentatively named "Administratium."

Administratium has 1 neutron, 12 assistant neutrons, 75 deputy neutrons, and 111 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together by a force called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons. Since Administratium has no electrons, it is inert.

However, it can be detected as it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A minute amount of Administratium causes one reaction to take over four days to complete instead of less than a second.

Administratium has a normal half-life of three years; it does not decay but instead undergoes a reorganization. In fact, Administratium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization causes some morons to become neutrons forming isodopes. This characteristic of moron-promotion leads some scientists to speculate that Administratium is formed whenever morons reach a certain quantity in concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as "Critical Morass."

Tags: humor, humour, science, people, jokes, funny, administratium

<clipSource>http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3861/is_200205/ai_n9045679</clipSource>

Creationists defeated in Kansas school vote on science teaching

clipped by: kwonsu

Clip Source: www.unconfirmedsources.com

TOPEKA>
School authorities in the American heartland state of Kansas have delivered a rebuff to subscribers of intelligent design by voting to banish language challenging evolution from new science guidelines.

Reacting furiously to the vote, Rev. Kyle Hingerman, pastor of The Fire and Sword Church of Jesus,in Topeka, lashed out at the State School Board.

"They say we're descended from a bunch of dirty monkeys!" he fumed. " How can they deny the unerring, factual, word of God? Don't they read the bible? Everyone knows that God made a beautiful Caucasian Eve and a handsome Adam, with convenient leaves hiding...er, things!"

"Those lying archeologists, " he roared, " ...making and hiding fossils to prove their fake case! EVOLUTION!, a filthy and dirty word," he roared, as the congregation poured out of the church and headed for the local middle school and science teacher Harold Aston.
"Burn the infidel at the stake!" Shouted one parishioner
As the pupils watched in dismay, Aston was dragged out of the classroom and into the schoolyard, where, with a single stroke of the sword he was beheaded by Rev. Hingerman as the the crowd cheered its approval.
"Now let's find that Charles Darwin guy!" someone shouted.
" Return to the church." said Hingerman as he wiped his sword. "There's enough hatred, fear, superstition and blasphemy being spread by these evolutionists. Peace and Love, that's what we need!"
The congregation returned to the church singing the hymn, " This is my Father's World."
