Although Florida's $1 billion is a lot, searching the records of other states frequently is particularly important in The Sunshine State, because the state houses so many transplants. It's no secret that Florida is the place to be if you're a retiree, but most didn't live there for their entire lives.

Despite the fact that Florida does you the courtesy of not putting any time limits on claiming your funds, most people would obviously prefer to have their money sooner rather than later. Additionally, if the cash belonged to a passed relative, the process of proving you're the rightful heir can take a bit more effort than claiming your own lost money, so it's important to get started ASAP.

Most people think it's not possible for them to have ever abandoned or forgotten money, but you'd be surprised. The reality is that the majority of people are owed some type of unclaimed money, so everyone owes it to themselves to search.

Oil prices continue to go down

At the pump, easing prices underscored Americans' waning consumption of gasoline. The average price of a gallon of regular slipped 1.7 cents to $3.909

Light, sweet crude for September delivery fell $2.69 to settle at $124.08 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, a day after the contract soared more than $4 in the biggest one-day jump in two weeks. Prices have now fallen in four of the last seven sessions and are 14 percent off their all-time trading high above $147, reached July 11.

The drop in demand has been felt overseas as well. China has been consuming less energy since imposing restrictions on driving and closing some factories in an effort to reduce pollution ahead of next month's Beijing Olympics, said Cordier of Liberty Trading Group.

"Even when those factories reopen, I think we've crossed a threshold where the speculative money isn't coming back into the oil market for the rest of 2008," he said.

Hurricanes, fires and similar calamities would surely add to the already humongous Florida unclaimed money pile sitting in the Sunshine State’s Treasury Department. At present, there’s roughly a billion dollars worth of unclaimed property in Florida belonging to millions of citizens. Most of the people owed unclaimed funds aren’t aware they have money waiting for them- reason why the money is fast piling-up.

According to Brendan Farrington of the Associated Press, “there are 7 million unclaimed accounts owed to 4 million Floridians.” You’d be surprised at who’s on the Treasurer’s list of people owed unclaimed money in Florida- NBA star Alonzo Mourning, Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers Band, Terry “the Hulkster” Hogan, and actors Burt Reynolds and Wesley Snipes are just some of the famous names that appear on the Florida unclaimed money list.

Florida fires spreading

Firefighters facing blazes that have destroyed or damaged more than 160 homes on Florida's Atlantic coast are battling flames amid lush palms and shrubs that have been allowed to flourish as communities sprang up among them, experts said Tuesday.

Wildfires have scorched 3,800 acres, or 6 square miles, through the neighboring towns of Palm Bay and Malabar, built into dense woods along Interstate 95. Investigators are searching for one or more arsonists who apparently started the fires.

"This really won't be over until it rains. Until it rains, the threat is going to be ever-present," said State Emergency Management Director Craig Fugate. Forecasts show little chance of rain until at least the weekend.

Gov. Charlie Crist on Tuesday toured the area where he has declared a state of emergency. Federal officials have authorized funding to reimburse the state's firefighting costs in Brevard County.

Contrary to what you may think, doing an unclaimed money search can be quick and hassle-free- putting in one’s name and SSS # in a state database. What becomes tricky is doing a search through multiple state databases- most people have unclaimed assets in several states because of migration or having several relatives. It’s easy to get frustrated after coming-up empty after a couple of searches specially with all the unclaimed money sites out there. The trick is learning the proper methods and avoiding 'finders' by learning to search for unclaimed property yourself.

Girlfriends' getaways — where women travel with other women and leave the menfolk home — are booming. And the phenomenon is not just about bachelorette parties or 20-somethings on spring break.

Bond, who has been tracking data since 1993, said there has been a 230 percent increase in the number of women-only travel companies in the past seven years. And many women who are taking girlfriends' getaways are married and leaving their husbands at home.

The travel industry has responded to the demand. Abercrombie & Kent announced last week new women's-only trips to places like India, China, the Bordeaux region of France and Argentina. Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, along with several other hotel chains, are catering to women with amenities and special vacation packages.

'Everyone is coming up with girlfriend getaway programs. I think that's a great sign that this is a phenomenon and not a trend. It's here to stay.'

In times like these- with the dollar down and the the U.S. economy in dreary condition, you would think Americans would keep close tabs on every cent they had. Judging by the amount of unclaimed money in the state of Florida right now however, millions of residents are actually missing money and I bet most of them don't even know it. I strongly doubt that the pile of unclaimed money in Florida and in other states like California and New York would've gotten so huge if citizens knew about it.

The lost money belongs to roughly 8 million residents who have somehow lost track of financial assets

Each year they do reunite around 200,000 people on the Florida unclaimed money list with their unclaimed funds, but there's still a lot left waiting to be stuffed into the pockets of their rightful owners.

If you or a relative is a resident of the Sunshine State, doing a search for FL unclaimed money would be a great idea.
