I can feel it, too. Over the past few years I’ve had an uncomfortable sense that someone, or something, has been tinkering with my brain, remapping the neural circuitry, reprogramming the memory.

And what the Net seems to be doing is chipping away my capacity for concentration and contemplation. My mind now expects to take in information the way the Net distributes it: in a swiftly moving stream of particles. Once I was a scuba diver in the sea of words. Now I zip along the surface like a guy on a Jet Ski.

The First Thanksgiving Observance

A Proclamation Signed in Script Type by George Washington
Appearing in The Massachusetts Centinel of October 14, 1789

This historic proclamation was issued by George Washington during his first year as President. It sets aside Thursday, November 26 as "A Day of Publick Thanksgiving and Prayer."

Signed by Washington on October 3, 1789 and entitled "General Thanksgiving," the decree appointed the day "to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God."

While there were Thanksgiving observances in America both before and after Washington's proclamation, this represents the first to be so designated by the new national government.

The law at issue went through the California legislature as SB 777, and now bans in school texts and activities any discriminatory bias against those who have chosen alternative sexual lifestyles, Meredith Turney, legislative liaison for Capitol Resource Institute, said.

Karen England, chief of CRI, told WND that the law is not a list of banned words, including "mom" and "dad." But she said the requirement is that the law bans discriminatory bias and the effect will be to ban such terminology.

"Having 'mom' and 'dad' promotes a discriminatory bias. You have to either get rid of 'mom' and 'dad' or include everything when talking about [parental issues]," she said. "They [promoters of sexual alternative lifestyles] do consider that discriminatory."

Not only is it supported by the iPod classic, there's the iPod nano, iPod touch, Xbox 360, PS3, Apple TV, many, many phones (including the iPhone), and even the Zune. It's the perfect time to get into h.264.

The Price: $99

The Verdict: Testing on a 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro with 2GB RAM, exporting a movie to iPhone using the Turbo.264 on default settings with Quicktime Pro used less than 50% CPU and took about 11 minutes, whereas exporting the same movie with the same settings without the device used 100% CPU and took 15 minutes.

One in five pregnancies worldwide and one in three pregnancies in Europe ends in abortion, according to a new study published in a special female-focused issue of the Lancet.

The study also found that, on average, 90 percent of women worldwide will have an abortion before the age of 45, based on 2003 data. However, many women will have had multiple abortions and many none at all to come to this average.

Although the statistics may seem startling, worldwide rates of induced abortion actually fell 17 percent from 46 million to 42 million between 1995 and 2003.

I’ve always liked the word praxis, or “practice or exercise of a technical subject”. It also has a common usage in political theory naming the puzzling part: how to connect your grand theory of the world to practical application, or “that through which theory or philosophy is transformed into practical social activity.”

The original of sentence which I distilled that template was about financial futures. It is a nice example of the two meanings playing off each other. The practitioners of a craft are all about praxis, and are likely to scoff at contents of W; while readers of W are likely to find that they can’t quite make actionable the lovely theory found there in.

YOU WILL NEED:

A strawberry

Some powdered meat tenderizer (papain)

Some liquid soap

A fork

Two small cups (shot glasses are great)

A coffee filter

Some rubbing alcohol

This extracts DNA from a strawberry. You can use just about any soft fruit, but strawberries are best; they're octoploid (each cell has 8 sets of chromosomes), so there's a shitload of DNA in them. Basically, you just squish up the strawberry in a little bit of water and add a touch^* each of soap and meat tenderizer. The soap disrupts the membranes and the protein secondary & tertiary structure in the tissue, allowing access to the DNA. The meat tenderizer contains proteases (papain, typically) that chew up the proteins that bind to the DNA, helping it get out into the solution. It also chews up the DNAses in the prep. The coffee filter gets rid of the trash, cleaning up the solution. The isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) then precipitates the DNA out of solution. Here's the rundown:
