Okay peeps, I’m sure most of you know how to use Limewire and Bittorrent these days. But, I’ll bet you haven’t used Google to perform a quick Mp3 search for the nagging song that’s been stuck in your head all day. The truth is that Google can be used to conduct a search for almost any file type, including Mp3s, PDFs, and videos. This functionality has been available for a long time, but most users haven’t caught on to it. So here’s a quick example of how to use Google to search for Mp3s. It’s like turning Google into the Napster of 2000.

The following is a Google search string for searching open web directories containing downloadable Nirvana music files. Substitute the term Nirvana in the search string for any other band of your liking. You can always bookmark the search result for future use.

-inurl:(htm|html|php) intitle:”index of” +”last modified” +”parent directory” +description +size +(wma|mp3) “Nirvana”

With some very slight modifications the same search string can easily be used to search for ebooks in DOC and PDF format:

-inurl:(htm|html|php) intitle:”index of” +”last modified” +”parent directory” +description +size +(pdf|doc) “george orwell 1984″

Or perhaps your looking for some specific video file:

-inurl:(htm|html|php) intitle:”index of” +”last modified” +”parent directory” +description +size +(mpg|wmv) “towelie”

You can check the official Google Advanced Search Operators page for further details on editing this search string to meet your specific needs. Enjoy yourselves!

The overhand is used as a temporary stopper to prevent a rope from unraveling or passing through a ring, eye, or pulley. It's also We starting point for other knots, including the reefor square-knot

[2] FIGURE-EIGHT KNOT: The figure eight is a better stopper knot than the overhand, because it's easier to untie after the rope has been pulled tight. Just form a bight with the working end over the standing part ... run the bitter end under the standing part to form a second bight ... then put the bitter end through the first bight. The result looks like a sideways numeral 8.

Tags: knots, ropes, tying, knotsmanship

<clipSource>http://www.motherearthnews.com/gallery.aspx?id=113446</clipSource>

The best FIREFOX add-ons (1)

clipped by: blusior
clipper's remarks: nice and useful, utile dulci

Clip Source: addons.mozilla.org

This extension allows you to use your Gmail Space (2.5 GB and growing) for file storage. It acts as an online drive, so you can upload files from your hard drive and access them from every Internet capable system. The interface will make your Gmail account look like a FTP host.

After the installation, you'll get an option called "GSpace" in your "Tools" menu, which opens the GSpace window.

It's great for storing/sharing files with your friends. Also very good to backup photos and music files (as you can view/listen to them from Gspace).

If you have any problems with the extension, please look at the FAQ page (http://www.getspace.com/faq.html). If your question is not listed or the solution doesn't apply to your specific question, please email the current developer (tnarik).

Let's do something interesting: send your suggestions about Gspace to tnarik until 23/11/2006. Let's see what we can we do to please you all.

1.
To join two independent clauses, use a comma followed by a conjunction, a semicolon alone, or a semicolon followed by a sentence modifier.

2.
Use commas to bracket nonrestrictive phrases, which are not essential to the sentence's meaning.

3.
Do not use commas to bracket phrases that are essential to a sentence's meaning.

4.
When beginning a sentence with an introductory phrase or an introductory (dependent) clause, include a comma.

5.
To indicate possession, end a singular noun with an apostrophe followed by an "s". Otherwise, the noun's form seems plural.

6.
Use proper punctuation to integrate a quotation into a sentence. If the introductory material is an independent clause, add the quotation after a colon. If the introductory material ends in "thinks," "saying," or some other verb indicating expression, use a comma.

7.
Make the subject and verb agree with each other, not with a word that comes between them.

8.
Be sure that a pronoun, a participial phrase, or an appositive refers clearly to the proper subject.

9.
Use parallel construction to make a strong point and create a smooth flow.

10.
Use the active voice unless you specifically need to use the passive.

11.
Omit unnecessary words.

As someone who has struggled on and off with crippling depression my whole life, I have found this list of "cognitive distortions" pretty useful in reframing certain elements of my thinking.

Clip Source: www.spiritsite.com

The Ten Forms of Twisted Thinking

All-or-nothing thinking

You see things in black-or-white categories. If a situation
falls short of perfect, you see it as a total failure. When a
young woman on a diet ate a spoonful of ice cream, she told
herself, "I’ve blown my diet completely." This thought
upset her so much that she gobbled down an entire quart of ice
              cream!

Overgeneralization

You see a single negative event, such as a romantic rejection
or career reversal, as a never-ending pattern of defeat by using
words such as "always" or "never" when you
think about it. A depressed salesman became terribly upset when he
noticed bird dung on the windshield of his car. He told himself,
"Just my luck! Birds are always crapping on my
              car!"

Mental filter

You pick out a single negative detail and dwell on it
exclusively, so that your vision of all reality becomes darkened,
like the drop of ink that discolors a beaker of water. Example:
You receive many positive comments about your presentation to a
group of associates at work, but one of them says something mildly
critical. You obsess about his reaction for days and ignore all
              the positive feedback.

Discounting the positive

You reject positive experiences by insisting they "don’t
count." If you do a good job, you may tell yourself that it
wasn’t good enough or that anyone could have done as well.
Discounting the positive takes the joy out of life and makes you
              feel inadequate and unrewarded.

Jumping to conclusions

Magnification

Emotional reasoning

You assume that your negative emotions necessarily reject the
way things really are: "I feel terrified about going on
airplanes. It must be dangerous to fly." Or "I feel
guilty. I must be a rotten person." Or "I feel angry.
This proves I’m being treated unfairly." Or "I feel so
              inferior. This means I’m a second-rate person." Or "I
feel hopeless. I must really be hopeless."

"Should statements"

Labeling

Personalization and blame

Tags: psychology, depression, personal

<clipSource>http://www.spiritsite.com/writing/davbur/part5.shtml</clipSource>

The Importance of Having Friends Who Disagree

clipped by: pongba

Clip Source: ravimohan.blogspot.com

Paul Graham says, in one of his essays (emphasis mine)

"....Why do you need other people? Can't you just think of new ideas yourself? The empirical answer is: no. Even Einstein needed people to bounce ideas off. Ideas get developed in the process of explaining them to the right kind of person. You need that resistance, just as a carver needs the resistance of the wood.

In my experience, this need for "friendly resistance" extends to far more than creating startups. Every time you have a new idea, you need people you can bounce it off. To get any real benefit out of this process you need people with a complex combination of characteristics.

They should

have firm (but not rigid) opinions on their own

have logical reasons for those beliefs and be able to articulate them clearly

are driven by ideas and not ideology

not attach their egos to their opinions.

be willing to concede a valid argument even if it forces them to possibly re-examine their beliefs

know how to listen

Tags: essay

<clipSource>http://ravimohan.blogspot.com/2006/02/importance-of-having-friends-who.html</clipSource>

Nice list of free (OSS) programs for windows

clipped by: l1wulf
clipper's remarks: The usual suspects are on this list, but there are a good number I never heard of or completely forgot about. Upon receiving it, I did the traditional “installation of Windows from scratch” on it to remove a lot of the garbage that is preinstalled on Dells. Then I got really busy installing tons of great software that takes care of pretty much every software need I have. Not only was all of the software free, every piece of it was open source, which means that the code is peer-reviewed; no spyware here!

What follows is a list of thirty pieces of software that are the cream of the crop of open source software for Windows. Not only is every piece of it free, almost all of them directly replace expensive software packages.

Tags: oss, open source, free, applications, list

<clipSource>http://www.thesimpledollar.com/2006/12/01/30-essential-pieces-of-free-and-open-software-for-windows/</clipSource>

Cheat Sheet Roundup - Over 30 Cheatsheets for developers

clipped by: BigBadWolf

Clip Source: www.petefreitag.com

Cheat Sheet Roundup - Over 30 Cheatsheets for developers

Lets face it, unless you have a photographic memory, no developer can remember all the different functions, options, tags, etc. that exist. Documentation can be cumbersome at times, thats why I like cheat sheets. They are quick references that feature the most commonly forgotten things on a specific topic. You can print them out and hang them on your wall, or just keep them handy in your bookmarks for quick reference.

I have rounded up over 30 cheatsheets that developers might find useful.

The six rules of evidential reasoning are my own distillation and
simplification of the scientific method. To make it easier for
students to remember these half-dozen guidelines, I've coined an
acronym for them: Ignoring the vowels, the letters in the word
"FiLCHeRS" stand for the rules of Falsifiability,
Logic, Comprehensiveness, Honesty, Replicability, and
Sufficiency. Apply these six rules to the evidence offered for any
claim, I tell my students, and no one will ever be able to sneak up on
you and steal your belief. You'll be filch-proof.

Falsifiability

It must be possible to conceive of evidence that would prove
the claim false.

Logic

Any argument offered as evidence in support of any claim must
be sound.

Comprehensiveness

The evidence offered in support of any claim must be
exhaustive -- that is all of the available evidence must be
considered.

Honesty

The evidence offered in support of any claim must be evaluated
without self-deception.

Replicability

If the evidence for any claim is based upon an experimental
result, or if the evidence offered in support of any claim could
logically be explained as coincidental, then it is necessary for the
evidence to be repeated in subsequent experiments or
trials.

Sufficiency

The evidence offered in support of any claim must be adequate
to establish the truth of that claim, with these stipulations:

the burden of proof for any claim rests on the claimant,

extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence, and

Bush

clipped by: Kore7
clipper's remarks:
Otto von Bismarck saw how American blunders led to American power and allegedly said that God has a special providence for drunks, fools, and the United States of America.
Walter Russell Mead (of the Council on Foreign Relations) puts Bush's 8-year stint in the White House into proper perspective.

America's foreign policy has been short-sighted and often self-defeating from the get-go, alternately collaborative, passive, and interventionist. And, yet, miraculously, we always come out ahead.

With the unstoppable rise of a global capitalist economy, Mead makes the case that America, for all its past and current faults, will continue to be the inevitable leader of this new international buoyancy. Not even our latest mistakes (unprecedented though they may be) can derail such a powerful incentive that is the modern American world trade system.

Which means, more than ever, we're literally all in this together.

Clip Source: www.tnr.com

Failing Upward

Nothing in the field of international affairs is as scandalous and as perplexing as the fact of American power. From Revolutionary times to the present, virtually all observers foreign and domestic have agreed that Americans don't do foreign policy well.

Moralistic, uninformed, unsubtle, alternately isolationist and hyperactive, hamstrung by a clumsy constitutional process and a public that oscillates between fatuous idealism and ignorant bellicosity, U.S. foreign policy has been shocking the world for more than 200 years.

And, worse still, we win. For two centuries, the United States has astounded critics with its bad foreign policy--and, for two centuries, the United States has steadily risen to an unprecedented level of power and influence in the international system.

The spectacle is often surreal. The United States seems to wander nearsightedly but relatively unscathed past one hazard after another

like a version of the chronically oblivious cartoon character Mr. Magoo.

Tags: america, usa, bush, foreign policy, world, history, war, empire, trade, economy

<clipSource>http://www.tnr.com/politics/story.html?id=bc641b19-51a1-4747-9af4-51e0ba57d500</clipSource>
