But one drug, ketamine, starts working in hours. In new research published this week in the journal Biological Psychiatry, scientists say they have a better idea of how the drug, also used as an anesthetic, may be affecting the brain. In this hour of Science Friday, guest host Joe Palca talks to the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health about what this drug reveals about depression and what it could mean for the future of depression treatment.

Turns out it's really not your fault. According to social psychologist Elliot Aronson, our brains work hard to convince us that we are doing the right thing, even in the face of sometimes overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Join guest host Joe Palca is this hour for a talk with Aronson, co-author of the new book "Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me)."

Your brain and body use 'maps' to translate incoming sensory signals into meaningful information, and to translate brain signals for things like movement into controlled motion. How your body sees itself -- and the world around it -- through these maps may have a big influence on how it behaves. In this segment, Ira talks with science writers Sandra and Matthew Blakeslee about their new book The Body Has a Mind of Its Own: How Body Maps in Your Brain Help You Do (Almost) Everything Better, and about the idea of 'body maps' and their role in connecting the body and brain.

But just how big is a trillion, anyway?

One trillion is 1,000,000,000,000 -- 10 to the 12th power, or a thousand thousand thousand thousand. To put things in perspective, current estimates put the number of stars in the Milky Way as somewhere between 100 and 400 billion. The U.S. population is slightly over 303 million, and the world population is around 6.6 billion.

One trillion dollars would be enough to buy about a thousand boxes of Girl Scout cookies for every person in the United States. A trillion barrels of oil would (at current consumption levels) fuel the world for about 33 years. We'll talk about other ways to visualize the number 'one trillion.' Is it possible for the human mind to really comprehend?
