Happy Birthday to our favorite Congressman

Today, October 8th, is Congressman Dennis Kucinich's birthday, and all of us in the campaign are pausing for just a moment to say "Happy Birthday, Dennis. Thank you for all that you've done over the years and all that you continue to do."

There won't be any big, lavish parties today. No champagne corks popping. No fireworks and no glitz. Not his style. Not ours. And most likely, not yours either.

Instead, it’s a day filled with the joy of knowing him, the smiles and laughter that come from sharing priceless stories about his younger years, and the gratitude we have for his service to our nation and his commitment to our people. Plus, a chance to offer our best wishes for MANY more years.

Anyone who thought Dennis J. Kucinich would quiet down after Democratic leaders gave him a public forum to talk about impeaching the president hasn’t met Dennis J. Kucinich.

The Ohio Democrat was allowed to make his case for impeachment at a House Judiciary Committee hearing July 25. But he’s back already with what he calls a “citizen’s petition” intended to demonstrate support for throwing President Bush out of the White House before his term ends in January.

In an online appeal to the names on his campaign e-mail list, Kucinich calls the Judiciary discussion “a day of singular importance.”

Kucinich intends to submit nearly 100,000 signatures — some mailed to his congressional office — in support of impeachment so that the “people will know that their message” will be delivered to the Judiciary committee

For the first time the case for impeachment was discussed in front of a congressional committee, in depth, at length and with authority

Bush critics get an unimpeachable forum

Kucinich got a rock star welcome of whistles, hoots and clapping as he walked into the hearing room, holding hands with his wife, from hundreds of anti-war, anti-Bush people crammed into the room and lining the hallways outside. T-shirts reading "Arrest Bush" and "Veterans for Impeachment" illustrated the sentiments of many.

"The decision before us is whether to demand accountability for one of the gravest injustices imaginable," Kucinich testified

Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., was less circumspect in asserting that Bush was "the worst president that our nation has ever suffered."

Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-N.Y., concluded that "this is the most impeachable administration in the history of America because of the way that it has clearly violated the law."

Vincent Bugliosi

acknowledged that "I am forbidden from accusing him of a crime, or even any dishonorable conduct" under House rules

The House on Tuesday voted 238-180 to send his article of impeachment — for Bush's reasoning for taking the country to war in Iraq — to the Judiciary Committee, which buried Kucinich's previous effort.

House Democratic leaders emphatically said the proceedings will not be about Bush's impeachment

the panel will conduct an election-year review — possibly televised — of anything Democrats consider to be Bush's abuse of power.

Kucinich had said that if his impeachment article is tabled he would just propose another one

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said this morning that the House Judiciary Committee may hold hearings on an impeachment resolution offered by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio).

Kucinich is expected to offer a "privileged resolution" this afternoon calling on the House to look at whether President Bush should be removed from office for lying to Congress and the American public when he sought congressional approval back in 2002 for taking military action to invade Iraq and overthrow Saddam Hussein.

Pelosi has said previously that impeachment "was off the table," so her comments this morning were surprising, and clearly signaled a new willingness to entertain the idea of ousting Bush, although no one in the Democratic leadership believes that is likely since the president has only six months left in this term.

Conyers said he had just gotten Kucinich's new impeachment resolution

This separation of powers was expressly intended to prevent a President from unilaterally summoning troops to war in the manner of a king.

Are we willing to respect our institution, our Constitution and ourselves? Will this President, at last, be held accountable for lying to Congress to gain authorization for the use of force against Iraq? Will we allow future Presidents to take office knowing they can commit the same acts with impunity?

Tomorrow I will bring forth a single article of impeachment which reviews the factual misrepresentations the President made to Congress to induce a favorable vote for the authorization for war.

The only question that remains is - - will we do anything about it?"

Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who introduced legislation last year to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney, is now aiming higher.

On the House floor this evening, the Ohio Democrat proposed impeaching President Bush. In language similar to that in the articles of impeachment he raised against Cheney, Kucinich sought support for a 35-count indictment charging Bush with misleading Congress and the American people into war with tales of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

Democratic House leaders have opposed impeaching Bush or Cheney as an unhelpful distraction. They were nearly embarrassed last year when Republicans voted to take up Kucinich's effort against Cheney in order to force a debate; they are unlikely to let the matter get so far this time

When asked if she thought that would ever happen, she said, "No, unfortunately not, because the Republicans and the Democrats all play to the same tune."

The anti-Kucinich campaign was also assisted by The Plain Dealer newspaper, which editorially endorsed one of his challengers four separate times; by hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from Republican corporate interests; and by support from Republican advisors.

Organizers of the indictment campaign were frustrated that the printed ballot ended up relegating the Bush-Cheney indictment article to the back side, which they said would cause some people to miss it.

The 8-by-14-inch yellow cardboard ballot listed the offices and candidates in the local election on one side, and at the bottom in block letters "Turn Ballot Over and Continue Voting."

and even with the issue relegated to the back of the ballot, it still was passed.
Other great news Dennis Kucinich was re-elected and will continue to speak out for the Constitution.
