The economic slowdown has swelled the ranks of people without health insurance. But now it is also threatening millions of people who have insurance but find that the coverage is too limited or that they cannot afford their own share of medical costs

Many of the 158 million people covered by employer health insurance are struggling to meet medical expenses that are much higher than they used to be â€” often because of some combination of higher premiums, less extensive coverage, and bigger out-of-pocket deductibles and co-payments.

With medical costs soaring, the coverage many people have may not adequately protect them from the financial shock of an emergency room visit or a major surgery. For some, even routine doctor visits might now take a back seat to basic expenses like food and gasoline.

â€œIt just keeps eating into peopleâ€™s income,â€ said James Corbin, a former union official who works for the local utility in Tucson.

Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has restored the word “abortion” as an acceptable search term on the POPLINE Web site, following criticism from some health advocates and librarians that the restriction amounted to censorship.

Dr. Michael Klag, the dean of the Bloomberg School, said the restriction had been put in place after inquiries by the U.S. Agency for International Development, which funds the site. He also added that he “could not agree more strongly with this decision, and I have directed that the POPLINE administrators restore ’abortion’ as a search term immediately.

USAID denies funding to nongovernmental organizations that perform or actively promote abortion as a method of family planning in other nations. However, health advocates and librarians strongly disagreed with the USAID decision.

It comes from a company in California, which officials said allowed meat from cattle unable to stand at the time of slaughter to enter the food chain.

But the USDA said the health hazard was minimal. Much of the meat was purchased for federal nutrition programmes.

The USDA had suspended operations there after an undercover video came to light showing crippled and sick animals being mistreated.
