Bush critics get an unimpeachable forum

Kucinich got a rock star welcome of whistles, hoots and clapping as he walked into the hearing room, holding hands with his wife, from hundreds of anti-war, anti-Bush people crammed into the room and lining the hallways outside. T-shirts reading "Arrest Bush" and "Veterans for Impeachment" illustrated the sentiments of many.

A Chilean judge has ordered the arrest of nearly 100 former secret police and soldiers over rights abuses committed under General Augusto Pinochet.

More than 3,000 people were killed or "disappeared" during military rule in Chile between 1973 and 1990.

Pinochet's feared secret police force, the Dina, seized 119 dissidents in July 1975 and killed them.

published news accounts claiming they had died in battles between leftist factions outside Chile.

Most of the arrest orders issued on Monday were for former members of the Dina, others were for soldiers and civilians said to have collaborated with it.

Since the return to democracy in 1990, Chile has put dozens of soldiers, policemen and intelligence agents on trial for human rights abuses.

Among those listed is former Dina commander Manuel Contreras, who is already in jail in connection with other abuses

Gen Pinochet - who died on 10 December, 2006 - was accused of fraud as well as human rights abuses, but poor health meant he never faced trial

An 80-year-old church deacon was removed from the Smith Haven Mall yesterday in a wheelchair and arrested by police for refusing to remove a T-shirt protesting the Iraq War.

Zirkel, a deacon at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Wyandanch, said his shirt had the death tolls of American military personnel and Iraqis - 4,000 and 1 million - and the words "Dead" and "Enough." The shirt also has three blotches resembling blood splatters.

Zirkel said he was sitting in the food court drinking coffee with his wife Marie, 77, and several others when police and mall security officers approached and demanded they remove their anti-war T-shirts

"They forcibly picked me up and put me in the wheelchair," said Zirkel

The 8-by-14-inch yellow cardboard ballot listed the offices and candidates in the local election on one side, and at the bottom in block letters "Turn Ballot Over and Continue Voting."

WASHINGTON, Jan 11 (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Friday overturned Iraq war protester Cindy Sheehan's conviction for demonstrating without a permit on the White House sidewalk in 2005 and ordered a new trial.

The unanimous three-judge panel ruled that Sheehan's conviction had been based on errors of law by the magistrate judge that eliminated the prosecutor's burden to show her criminal intent.

On Sept. 26, 2005, Sheehan and four other members of an anti-war group approached the northwest gate of the White House and requested a meeting with President George W. Bush to discuss the Iraq war

After they were turned down, they walked a short distance and sat down on the White House sidewalk. By this time, more than 200 other people had assembled to protest the Iraq war

U.S. Park Police officers then instructed them to leave or face arrest. Sheehan was among those remaining on the sidewalk who were arrested and later convicted.

Besides, a camera is not a "liberal" or "conservative" source. It's very clear in the video that the officer initiated and esculated a confrontation; while the suspect may well have been loud and profane, she never once touched or physically resisted the officer. While the Chief of police attributes the entire incident to "a lack of respect" on the part of the woman, it's pretty clear that no such respect for the civilian was on offer, so my response to both the officer and the chief is "sit on it and rotate."

the cop made the disastrously unwarranted assumption that Beeland was "a perp," even though Beeland had not behaved as a person fleeing arrest would have - continue to her car and flee. And needless to say, as it was her card, and she was distraught due to perfectly reasonable circumstances, it was entirely predictable that she would be both upset and confused.

Acquitted, peace grannies return to protesting

The Oregonian

Two weeks after being acquitted of criminal mischief charges, the anti-Iraq war group calling itself the Seriously P.O.'d Grannies returned Friday to the same sidewalk outside a Northeast Portland U.S. military recruiting center where they were arrested in April.

On Good Friday, a half a dozen members of the group were busted after using washable red finger paint to leave handprints on a front window. But a Multnomah County jury found no problem with the protest, even though a judge cited them for leaving graffiti.

Joseph Rose of The Oregonian was outside the recruiting station as the grannies -- and a few grandpas -- made their return. Marine and Army recruiters inside the office declined to be interviewed. A group in Brattleboro is petitioning to put an item on a town meeting agenda in March that would make Bush and Vice President Cheney subject to arrest and indictment

This petition is as radical as the Declaration of Independence, and it draws on that tradition in claiming a universal jurisdiction when governments fail to do what they're supposed to do," said Kurt Daims, 54, a retired machinist leading the drive

Vermont Attorney General William Sorrell, a Democrat whose office has repeatedly sued the Bush administration over environmental issues, called the move "of very dubious legality."

The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment Friday. The press office did not immediately respond to an e-mail.

As president, Bush has visited every state except Vermont.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Thieves targeted an Orlando business nearly 30 times in the past few weeks and have gotten away with some unusual loot. More than 1,000 rolls of toilet paper are missing from the United Supply Company

Orange County investigators said they caught Christopher Edge walking down Orange Blossom Trail with a large bag filled with hundreds of rolls of toilet paper. They said Edge admitted to selling the loot for $1 a roll.

He was selling it to people in the neighborhood. Selling it for crack, something to eat, something to drink," said Andre Davis of the United Supply Company. "And to go to jail for a few rolls of toilet tissue? That's just wrong."

Edge has been arrested twice for stealing toilet paper from United Supply Company. The business recently installed a new alarm system that they hope will keep other potential thieves away

Police have arrested a man for possession of a hallucinogenic toad in the States. Apparently licking a Colorado River Toad's venom glands will get you high. But what do students in the States think of the idea?

A man in Missouri has been arrested for possession of a hallucinogenic toad

Police in Kansas City say David Theiss planned to get high by licking the Colorado River Toad's venom glands.

The 21-year-old is accused of possessing the toad "with the intention of using it as a hallucinogen

"People used to do it all the time but it got faded out awhile, but came back as a fad. Not a smart one."

Clay County said it was the first time they had dealt with such a drugs bust.

Theiss was released on bail.

The toad was kept in custody at a police crime lab, authorities said

the venom can make people sick and can kill household pets.
