OKLAHOMA CITY -- Members of Iraq Veterans Against the War spoke out Monday in Oklahoma as part of a national tour that includes events in Oklahoma City and Lawton, near Fort Sill Army Base.

The protesters criticized politicians for saying they support the troops, while voting against legislation to upgrade military equipment sent to Iraq and take care of veterans' medical needs when they return home

most Iraqis do not support "the American occupation" of their country.

Kristofer Goldsmith of Long Island, N.Y., spoke of attempting suicide after becoming disillusioned in Iraq.

"The best way to support the troops is to keep them alive when they get back,"

The IVAW was praised by soldiers speaking at the Capitol for helping them deal with red tape standing in the way of getting medical and other benefits.

They were joined by two Oklahoma men whose sons were killed in Iraq — Warren Henthorn of Choctaw and John Scripsick of Wayne.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan qualified Friday for a November showdown with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, collecting the signatures needed to get on the ballot as an independent candidate for Congress.

Republican Dana Walsh and Libertarian Philip Berg will join Pelosi and Sheehan on the Nov. 4 ballot.

With her ballot spot guaranteed, Sheehan can focus on the fall campaign, where she will challenge Pelosi from the left, slamming the speaker for refusing to start impeachment proceedings against President Bush and not taking a stronger stance against the war in Iraq.

Sheehan will be the longest of longshots in her attempt to oust Pelosi, one of the nation's best-known and most powerful Democrats

Sheehan

became involved in the anti-war movement in 2004, after her son Casey was killed while serving in Iraq.

A year later she founded Gold Star Families for Peace and spoke out against the war in Iraq.

The operator of a leading alternative news and strongly anti-war website has become the target of nefarious thugs apparently in the employ of the U.S. government who have continually harassed him and ordered him to shut down his website.

Tom Feeley, owner and editor of InformationClearingHouse.info, has endured public harassment, home invasions, death threats and threats to his family simply for running a website.

Counterpunch writer Mike Whitney has circulated an e mail describing what happened to Feeley in an attempt to draw attention to the matter.

Whitney writes that earlier this week Feeley’s wife was startled to suddenly discover three well dressed men standing in her kitchen who told her that Tom must “Stop what he is doing on the Internet, NOW!”

To emphasize the point, the thug pulled back his jacket to reveal a gun while barking out the warning.

Tom’s wife was hysterical and refuses to go back to the house. She contacted the FBI but was told there was nothing they could do.

Bush critics get an unimpeachable forum

Kucinich got a rock star welcome of whistles, hoots and clapping as he walked into the hearing room, holding hands with his wife, from hundreds of anti-war, anti-Bush people crammed into the room and lining the hallways outside. T-shirts reading "Arrest Bush" and "Veterans for Impeachment" illustrated the sentiments of many.

"The decision before us is whether to demand accountability for one of the gravest injustices imaginable," Kucinich testified

Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., was less circumspect in asserting that Bush was "the worst president that our nation has ever suffered."

Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-N.Y., concluded that "this is the most impeachable administration in the history of America because of the way that it has clearly violated the law."

The group these women are with, CODEPINK, ``is a women-initiated. grassroots peace and social justice movement, working to end the war in Iraq, stop new wars, and redirect our resources into health care, education and other life-affirming activities,'' according to its website, www.codepink4peace.org.

CHICAGO (CBS) â€• In addition to honoring those who have died defending our nation, a group of citizens and veterans also took time Monday to call for an end to the war in Iraq.

As CBS 2's Mai Martinez reports, their banners clearly proclaimed their opposition to the war, but members of the group and others attending a ceremony at Chicago's Vietnam Veterans War Memorial said their thoughts and prayers are with the troops serving overseas.

"What we want is the public to understand that the veterans are united in supporting the GI's coming back, these young veterans, no matter what we think of the war," said veteran Ray Parrish.

We support the warrior, but we do not support the war,

Redden, along with other veterans, citizens and loved ones of fallen soldiers, joined together Monday to call for an end to the war in Iraq.

CHICAGO, IL — Apron-wearing anti-war protesters disrupted Republican presidential candidate John McCain's speech to the National Restaurant Association Monday.

To the tune of "I've been working on the railroad," they sang, "McCain's in the kitchen with George Bush, cooking up another war" and unfurled red banners.

McCain had just finished slamming Democratic rival Barack Obama for his willingness to meet face-to-face with world leaders hostile to America such as Iran's.

Iran provides some of the deadliest explosive devices used in Iraq to kill our soldiers

Reacting in Billings Mont., Obama said, "When the world was on the brink of nuclear holocaust, Kennedy talked to [Soviet leader Nikita] Khrushchev and he got those missiles out of Cuba. Why shouldn't we have the same courage and the confidence to talk to our enemies?"

REMERTON, Wash. - They're expecting good weather and big crowds in Bremerton this weekend for the annual Armed Forces Day Parade.

This year organizers expect two dozen bands, 165 entries and nearly 6,000 people on parade.

If the weather heats up, it could draw 40,000 spectators

But one veterans group says they're not invited. The North Olympic Peninsula Veterans for Peace say they're being kept out of the parade this year because of their anti-war stance.

The anti-war group marched last year. This year the Chamber of Commerce sent them a rejection letter.

"We believe sincerely that we need to find peaceful solutions to all international problems, national problems, local problems," Jenkins said.

But organizers say the group is too political and that's not what the parade is about.

Jenkins says his group will be there and be visible Saturday even if they don't march.

Larsen says he'd be glad to sit down and talk and see if they can work out some kind of compromise.

ROCHESTER, NY and mdash; As they set off on their nine-day, 118-mile march, two dozen local veterans and activists carried peace flags, anti-war banners and what they hope is a small share of the burden placed on the American soldiers sent to Iraq and Afghanistan over the past five years.

"We believe the best way to support the troops is to bring them home and take care of them when they get here," Marilyn Lambert-Fisher of Brighton said Thursday morning

Similar groups set off from Ithaca and Utica on Thursday as part of New York State Marches for Peace, sleeping in living rooms, church halls, grocery stores and campgrounds until they arrive May 18 at Fort Drum, home to 17,000 soldiers.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Opponents of the war in Iraq will join together from across upstate New York beginning this week for a 10-day march to the U.S. Army's Fort Drum in northern New York.

The erstwhile ladies (and men in drag) of antiwar group Code Pink have been saving House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) the trouble of setting her alarm clock this week.

At 7 a.m. each morning beginning Tuesday, they have been showing up outside her luxury Georgetown apartment building with megaphones and dance routines to roust the lefty lawmaker from San Francisco and pressure her into forcing an end to the Iraq war.

â€œWeâ€™ve been trying to give her a wakeup call in the morning,â€ Code Pink spokeswoman Gael Murphy tells The Mouth. â€œNancy, wake up and bring the troops home!â€

The ladies in pink brought a banner reading â€œDonâ€™t Buy Bushâ€™s War,â€ and even had a cup of coffee ready for Pelosi. But, alas, she refused to accept the steaming cup of joe this morning, Murphy says.

Theyâ€™re also camping out on Capitol Hill and outside Pelosiâ€™s San Francisco home

May 4 commemoration ends with arrests War protesters refuse to leave bridge in Kent

KENT, OH — An anti-war march and protest in downtown Kent following Sunday's commemoration of the 38th anniversary of the May 4, 1970 shootings at Kent State University resulted in four arrests.

The march, organized by the Kent State Anti-War Committee and the Portage Peace Coalition, began on campus and proceeded west along East Main Street, stopping at the KSU U.S. Air Force ROTC building in the Terrace Annex to post paper peace signs on the doors

Police clad in riot helmets and armed with pepper-ball guns attempted to re-open the bridge to vehicle traffic

early on officers stood by and allowed the protesters to chant, dance, play music and hang signs from the bridge

ST. PAUL, MN — Anti-war protestors rallied on the State Capitol steps Thursday to show their opposition to the Republican National Convention coming to St. Paul in September.

They chanted and demanded the city grant permits for protestors to march in front of the Xcel Center where the RNC will be held.

Deb Konechne, St. Paul, was one of the organizers of the March on the RNC and Stop the War event.

She said her group has a constitutional right to protest and will be marching in front of the Xcel Center on September 1, with or without a city permit.

Konechne's group has filed a lawsuit against the city of St. Paul because so far the city has not issued them or any organization a permit to protest.

Tom Walsh, St. Paul Police public information officer, said this group has nothing to worry about.

"Everyone who has applied for a permit has been promised they would have a permit in their hand by May 31", said Walsh.

Operations in Oakland and other West Coast ports ground to a halt Thursday after ILWU workers stayed off the job, said Steve Getzug, spokesman for the Pacific Maritime Association, which represents companies that move cargo through the ports.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — The Bay Area celebrated May Day in traditional fashion Thursday - with an array of protests around the region: for an end to the war in Iraq, against education budget cuts and in favor of legalization for undocumented immigrants.

Dockworkers with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union walked off the job at ports up and down the West Coast, including Oakland and San Francisco, calling for an end to the war. Union officials estimated the number of workers at 25,000 while maritime officials placed the number closer to 10,000.

Anti-war protesters, joining dockworkers and other labor leaders, marched down the Embarcadero from Fisherman's Wharf to Justin Herman Plaza, where a rally drew several hundred protesters and onlookers.

Students at San Francisco State University, UC Berkeley and other college campuses staged walkouts and teach-ins over the state's proposed cuts to education spending.

An 80-year-old church deacon was removed from the Smith Haven Mall yesterday in a wheelchair and arrested by police for refusing to remove a T-shirt protesting the Iraq War.

Zirkel, a deacon at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Wyandanch, said his shirt had the death tolls of American military personnel and Iraqis - 4,000 and 1 million - and the words "Dead" and "Enough." The shirt also has three blotches resembling blood splatters.

Zirkel said he was sitting in the food court drinking coffee with his wife Marie, 77, and several others when police and mall security officers approached and demanded they remove their anti-war T-shirts

"They forcibly picked me up and put me in the wheelchair," said Zirkel

charged with criminal trespassing and resisting arrest

Activists with dueling opinions had gathered to support and oppose America's five-year campaign.
