ABC had Chevron. CBS had Exxon. CNN had the coal lobby. But you know what happened last week? ABC refused to run our Repower America ad -- the ad that takes on this same oil and coal lobby.

'Are We Alone?'.

There are now more than 300 planets known beyond our own Solar System.

Known as exo-planets, they are likely to be discovered with the completion of instruments such as Scuba 2, a camera to detect dust from the earliest phases of the formation of galaxies and, in the near future, the James Webb Space Telescope, an orbiting telescope to catch the first light of the universe.

The aim of the workshop is to gather researchers from areas including astrophysics, geophysics and biology to discuss astronomical instruments, both present and future, and laboratory based experiments studying extreme environments.

Some folks around here think the economic sky is falling and state lawmakers in Sacramento and Salem are ignoring their constituents in the hinterlands.

Guess the time is ripe to create a whole new state.

That's the thinking up here along the border between California and Oregon, where 12 sparsely populated, thickly forested counties in both states want to break away and generate the 51st star on the nation's flag - the state of Jefferson.

Talking about secession has been a quasi-joking conversational saw since 1941, when five counties in the area started things by actually declaring themselves - briefly - to be the state of Jefferson. But now, with the economy in trouble and unemployment soaring, the idea of greater independence is getting its most serious consideration since World War II.

The Grange Hall of Yreka,

is activating 51 of its brethren halls in the area to collect 1 million signatures to have a statehood advisory measure put on the California ballot.

A group of young, former Lehman Bros. executives make plans to cross the border into Mexico.

Faced with seemingly insurmountable financial and personal hurdles, Americans have been streaming across the border into Mexico in the hopes of finding a better quality of life.

Mexican border patrol agents have abandoned searching for Mexicans crossing into the US and are now focused on Americans crossing into Mexico.

One American who was caught crossing the border was former Lehman Bros. Financier Ralph Goldman. "I just want a better life for my wife and kids", Goldman tearfully explained to the Mexican border patrol agent. "All the money and jobs have come here. The weather is nicer. Houses are cheaper. The banks haven't failed. I could have a life here".

Lame Duck President George W. Bush promised those who remain in America a $25 McDonald's gift certificate in addition to their economic stimulus checks. However, the House and Senate have not yet verified the gift certificate offer.

Aiming to inspire people to think globally about sustainable living, Arthus-Bertrand has been photographing unique views of our planet, seen from the sky, since 1994 - and has produced an exhibit of over 150 4-ft. by 6-ft. prints which will be on display in New York City at the World Financial Center Plaza and along the Battery Park City Esplanade from May 1, 2009 to June 28, 2009. On Sept. 18th, the San Francisco-based Electronic Frontier Foundation filed a lawsuit in federal court against the NSA on behalf of five AT&T customers to stop the ongoing surveillance of their telephone and internet communications. The plaintiffs are also suing the President, Vice President and other officials who ordered or participated in the warrantless wiretapping.

Evidence in the case includes documents provided by former AT&T technician Mark Klein showing AT&T routed copies of internet traffic to a secret room in San Francisco controlled by the NSA.

This latest lawsuit filed by civil liberties groups fighting the domestic spying program established shortly after Sept. 11th, 2001, follows on the heels of Congress' attempt to provide "retroactive immunity" to the telecommunications companies participating in the program through the FISA Amendments Act of 2008.

Despite 21 Month Tree-Sit Berkeley Oaks Cut Down

As of Monday morning, all of the trees that the University plans to cut were down except for a redwood that still has four tree sitters in it. Five people were arrested as they peacefully pleaded with arborists not to destroy the trees.

Tree-sitters fought for the trees for 21 months. Some regarded the Memorial Oak Grove as a sacred place to Native American people. The California Native Plant Society CNPS stated that the Memorial Oak Grove was "an important gene bank for the Coast Live Oak."

FBI demadning DNA from activists

Last week at least three individuals were visited by FBI agents and compelled to give DNA samples. The agents possessed court orders for their DNA in investigation of a "violation of the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act"

Another individual was served with a subpoena for a federal grand jury hearing. FBI Special Agent Andrew Myers found her in downtown Santa Cruz as she hung out with friends last weekend. We believe the date on the grand jury hearing to be October 14, but that is not confirmed yet.

Anyone with more specific information should post here. We need to be as public about this as possible. We need to let folks facing FBI intimidation know that they have our utmost support, and send the FBI the message that we will never cooperate with their witch-hunts.
