More than 140 people are feared dead after a passenger plane swerved off the runway at Madrid's Barajas airport.

A spokesman for the Spanish emergency services, Herbigio Corral, said only 28 people survived the crash

It is thought that the left engine caught fire.

Helicopters were called in to dump water onto the plane. More than 70 ambulances were seen leaving the scene.

Spanair's parent company, Scandinavian firm SAS, said the accident happened at 1423.

A local emergency service official, Ervigio Corral, told Efe news agency that there were many children among the victims.

Reports say it was the first crash at Barajas airport, some 13km (8 miles) from central Madrid, since 1983.

The BBC's Steve Kingstone, in Madrid, said a grim line of emergency vehicles obscured the view of the crash scene.

A British man who witnessed the aftermath of the accident, Alan Gemmell, told the BBC: "The whole back end of the plane was just burnt to a crisp."

While on the podium with rival Barack Obama McCain announced that Bigfoot would be his running mate. Bigfoot then joined the two men onstage for a rousing round of applause and adulation.

While the timing of the selection was certainly a master stroke, some experts are wondering if the selection itself was as masterful, politically speaking, as Bigfoot is a bit of an unknown.

"I figure Bigfoot has a several strong positives and just a few weaker negatives." says has Republican operative Sasha Quatch, of the American Institute, a Republican think-tank. "He is a strong vital character, which any VP of John McCain must be, he is also a political outsider which should help McCain with voters suspicious of his long 'inside the beltway' career. The Code of Hammurabi was one of several sets of laws in the Ancient Near East.[7][8] Most of these codes come from similar cultures and racial groups in a relatively small geographical area, and they have passages which resemble each other. The earlier Code of Ur-Nammu (21st century BC), the Hittite laws (ca. 1300 BC), and Mosaic Law (traditionally ca. 1400 BC under Moses), all contain statutes that bear at least passing resemblance to those in the Code of Hammurabi and other codices from the same geographic area.

When these microscopic plants die and sink to the ocean bottom, bacteria feed on them and subsequently consume all the oxygen dissolved in the water.

American Airlines has joined forces with British Airways

US aviation officials have accused American Airlines of major breaches of safety, including intentionally flying planes known to need repairing

two MD-83 passenger jets were used on dozens of flights in 2007, even though repair work reported as necessary by pilots had not been done.

The FAA statement comes hours after British Airways confirmed it had sealed an alliance with American Airlines

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it wanted to fine the company a total of $7.1m (£3.8m).

Problems with drug and alcohol testing were also found, officials said.

American used the wrong provisions of its Minimum Equipment List (MEL) to return two MD-83 aircraft to service after pilots had reported problems, and flew the planes 58 times in violation of FAA regulations

"In intentionally continuing to fly the aircraft, the carrier did not follow important safety regulations intended to protect passengers and crew," the FAA said.

The hope is to give patients just one jab

A single injection of modified cells could halt the advance of rheumatoid arthritis, say UK scientists.

Rheumatoid arthritis is one of a family of "autoimmune" diseases, in which the body's defence systems launch attacks on its own tissues.

The precise trigger for these attacks is not known, but the latest technique, so far tested only on cells in the laboratory, aims to "reset" the immune system back to its pre-disease state

A sample of the body's white blood cells is taken and treated with a cocktail of steroids and vitamins which transforms a particular type of immune cell called a dendritic cell into a "tolerant" state.

These cells are then injected back into the joint of the patient.

He also suggested that the same process might be applied to other auto-immune diseases such as type I diabetes, or even MS.

If you’ve been using Mozilla’s Weave extension to sync your bookmarks between PCs, but you don’t like the idea of storing your data on Mozilla’s servers, it isn’t too difficult to set up your own Weave host.

Blogger Marios Tziortzis, recently posted a very nice tutorial that walks you through how to run Weave from your own server. The main downside is that in Tziortzis’ scenario there’s no https connections, so if you’ve got sensitive data, this isn’t the way to go.

But if you just want to backup some casual bookmarks and host the tools on your own server, the process is fairly simple

All you need is a web host that supports WebDAV

Once your WebDAV server is up and running, you just need to configure Weave

Unfortunately Weave is currently a closed beta, so if you haven’t already opened an account and downloaded the extension, it might take some time to be accepted.

It may be Martin County officials trying to scare off people looking for sex on the beach.

The county is exploring the idea of installing "talking" cameras at several of the public beaches to ward off or catch people engaged in public sex.

"I'm all for it," said Commission Chairman Michael DiTerlizzi, who first proposed putting Web cams at beaches after several recent arrests of men soliciting men for sex at county beaches. "Anything that deters that kind of activity is going to be good."

FlashCAM devices sense motion and then flash a bright light, said David Graham, assistant to County Administrator Duncan Ballantyne.

After being activated, the cameras issue a pre-recorded verbal warning to let people know they are under surveillance, Graham said. Sixty seconds later, they start recording.

The commissioner said he wants cameras watching everywhere on the beaches and parking lots but not in the public bathrooms because it would be an invasion of privacy.
