A US tourist has been stabbed to death by a Chinese man in central Beijing

A second tourist was badly hurt in the attack at the Drum Tower monument.

The assailant then committed suicide by jumping from the 13th Century landmark

The attack happened despite high security across the capital on the first full day of Olympic competition, with more than 150,000 police and other personnel on patrol

An estimated 450,000 foreign tourists are expected to be in Beijing for the Games, which opened with a lavish ceremony on Friday evening.

Officials named the Chinese man as 47-year-old Tang Yongming, from the eastern town of Hangzhou, but said they had no idea what had motivated his attack or suicide.

Reports say the tourists' guide was also hurt.

A powerful earthquake has killed at least 8,500 people in China's south-western Sichuan province, up to 5,000 of them in just one county

Many more are feared killed and injured in other parts of the country after the 7.8-magnitude quake struck at 1428 local time (0628 GMT).

The epicentre of the earthquake was about 92km (57 miles) from Chengdu, Sichuan's provincial capital.

One of the worst-hit areas appears to be Beichuan county, part of the Mianyang city municipal area, about 50km from the epicentre.

The death toll could turn out to be much higher once the damage in Wenchuan county - the epicentre - is assessed,

The quake was felt as far away as Beijing

Dozens of aftershocks have been reported since the quake, which was felt in Beijing, 1,545km (960 miles) away, and the Thai capital Bangkok, 1,800km (1,200 miles) away

Chinese press say the authorities tried to cover up the outbreak

The virus, Enterovirus 71, has killed 20 children since it was discovered in Fuyang, a city in Anhui province.

State media said the number of cases had now increased to nearly 1,900

The number of infected children has steadily increased since hospitals in Fuyang began admitting patients with fever, ulcers in the mouth, or a rash on their hands and feet, according to the Anhui Health Bureau's website

The illness - known as EV71 - mainly affects children under the age of 10

WASHINGTON—President Bush, addressing an embarrassing flap that has strained U.S.-China relations, told Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday that the shipment of nuclear missile fuses to Taiwan was a mistake. The president's national security adviser, Stephen Hadley, said the matter came up when Bush called Hu.

U.S. military's mistaken delivery to Taiwan of electrical fuses for an intercontinental ballistic missile

investigation into the security of Pentagon weapons.

China on Wednesday strongly protested the mistaken delivery.

China Executes ex-Food and Drug Chief

China executed the former head of food and drug watchdog Tuesday after founding him guilty of corruption, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Zheng Xiaoyu, 62, the former director of State Food and Drug Administration, was executed Tuesday morning, following the approval of China's Supreme People's Court, Xinhua said in a brief dispatch.

Zheng was sentenced to death in late May for accepting 6.5 million yuan (850,000 dollars) in bribes in exchange for granting approvals for hundreds of medicines, some of which proved dangerous.

China has been under pressure domestically and internationally to improve its quality controls after a series of health scares attributed to substandard Chinese products, including exported tainted food and fake drugs.

Chinese officials have already said the country faces social unrest and further tarnishing of its image abroad unless it improves the safety of its food and drug chains.
