Members of Congress and their families are blessed with their very own gold-plated, taxpayer-financed, Washington-run health care system.

Right under the Capitol dome, conveniently situated between the Senate and House chamber, is the Office of the Attending Physician. Inside are more than a dozen navy doctors, nurses, medical technicians, pharmacists and other health professionals, all employed by the government solely to attend to a select clientele: the 535 members of Congress.

No appointment needed, no pesky insurance forms to fill out, no co-pay -- just care.

For this, members pay a flat fee of $503 a year. A year! You and I are taxed to cover the real costs of this elite service. And that's not the end of public health benefits for lawmakers -- if they need a specialist, an operation, therapy, rehab or other pricey procedure, it's all free at the government's Walter Reed and Bethesda Naval hospitals.

If it's good enough for them, why not us?

Cranberries have long been valued for their ability to help prevent and treat urinary tract infections. Now, recent studies suggest that this native American berry may also promote gastrointestinal and oral health, prevent the formation of kidney stones, lower LDL and raise HDL (good) cholesterol, aid in recovery from stroke, and even help prevent cancer.

It takes wolves a year or two to learn how to hunt, but their ferociousness doesn't last long.

According to a new study, most wolves lose their prowess by age 3, just halfway through their lives. After that, they have to rely on younger members of the pack to catch the majority of their meals.

The discovery adds to growing evidence that aging affects animals much like it affects people.

The study revealed that wolves reach their hunting peak at age 2 or 3, even though the animals live for an average of five or six years and sometimes reach age 10 or even older.

Packs with a larger proportion of older wolves killed fewer elk than did more youthful packs. Scientists have long assumed that one adult wolf would be as dangerous as the next.

"The take-home message is that an adult wolf is only maximally lethal for about 25 percent of its adult life span,"

"Carnivores simply aren't as ferocious as we think they are."

Ulrok, a fully grown Rottweiler was more than happy to become the father figure in young Beldaran’s life, after the poor baby was rejected by her natural mother. Kahlani, the wolf who gave birth to this little furry treasure, was too young herself and her maternal instincts didn’t kick in.

Caretakers at the Krisma Preserve, in Mt. Desert, Maine, tried to find another surogate parent for Beldaran, but Ulrok was the only one who accepted the young cub, when she was just four days old. Now they spend all their time together, playing in the sun, howling at the full moon and even sleeping together.

It’s nice to see them getting along so well and, no matter how down you are, just one look at them will put a big smile on your face. But, once Beldaran is old enough to take care of herself, she will be introduced to a pack of wolves, to make sure she grows up to be a wolf and not something else.

Asteroid with energy of three Hiroshima bombs explodes over Indonesia

An asteroid, with the energy of three Hiroshima bombs, has exploded in the atmosphere above Indonesia - reigniting fears about Earth's defences against space impacts.

Witnesses in Indonesia heard the explosion and spotted a huge fireball in the sky. The blast was also heard by monitoring stations 10,000 miles away, according to a report by scientists at the University of Western Ontario.

The explosion, on October 8, caused no damage on the ground because it occurred at high altitude, 15 to 20km above Earth's surface.

A Nasa statement said: "We estimate size to be about 5-10 meters in diameter. As a rule, the most common types of stony asteroids would not be expected to cause ground damage unless their diameters were about 25 meters in diameter or larger."

clipper's remarks: Trollstigen is closed during the fall and winter months. A normal opening season stretches from the middle of May to October, but may sometimes be shorter or longer due to changes in the weather conditions, or unexpected trolls of course.

In the summer of 2005 the road was repaired and about 16 million NOK was spent on protection against rockfall, making the road a lot safer to drive on....that is unless you aren't watching closely......for the trolls.....bwahahahahahaha......

Trollstigen

Trollstigen (English: The Troll Ladder) is a mountain road in Rauma, Norway, part of Norwegian National Road 63 connecting Åndalsnes in Rauma and Valldal in Norddal. It is a popular tourist attraction due to its steep incline of 9% and eleven hairpin bends up a steep mountain side. Trollstigen was opened on July 31, 1936, by King Haakon VII after 8 years of construction.

The road up is narrow with many sharp bends, and although it has been widened in recent years, vehicles over 12.4 meters long are prohibited from driving the road. At the top there is large parking place which allows visitors to leave their cars and walk for about ten minutes to a viewing balcony which overlooks the road with its bends and the Stigfossen waterfall. Stigfossen is a beautiful waterfall which falls 320 meters down the mountain side.
