Net set for 'language shake-up'

The internet is on the cusp of the "biggest change" to its working "since it was invented 40 years ago", the net regulator Icann has said.

The body said it that it was finalising plans to introduce web addresses using non-Latin characters.

The proposal - initially approved in 2008 - would allow domain names written in Asian, Arabic or other scripts.

The body said if the final plans were approved on 30 October, it would accept the first applications by 16 November.

The first Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs) could be up and running by "mid 2010" said the president of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann).

In 1992 a prominent US linguist stunned the academic world by predicting that by the year 2100, 90% of the world's languages would have ceased to exist.

"Most people are not at all interested in the death of languages," he says. "If we are not cautious about the way English is progressing it may eventually kill most other languages."

Why Nokia wants my email password?

Many new Nokia S60 terminals seem to have an "email wizard" that helps the user to configure an email account to the terminal. Wizard prompts the user to give some basic information and then in most cases wizard is able to create account with all the correct settings.

Nice! I just sent to Nokia my email address, password, operator information and terminal type (in HTTP headers, not visible here). All you Nokia 5800 users around the world: did you know that? I didn't know that, nor did I like it.

A computer programmer from Finland who lost his ring finger in a motorcycle accident has had it replaced with a USB drive.

Using a traditional prosthetic finger Jerry has been able embed a 'USB key' - like the ones used in traditional flash drives - giving him the world's only two gigabyte finger.
