clipper's remarks: CNN, in my opinion, is no longer to be considered a reputable source of important and relevant news. Although I realize Michael Moore is publicizing his new film SICKO, which is of course, self-serving, the film is about an issue of great importance and relevance to the entire country. To bump this discussion of such a critical matter in favour of an interview with Paris Hilton who is relevant to nothing of importance in the overall serious issues confronting our country is an insult to what the news media is supposed to be all about.

CNN Dumps Michael Moore for Paris Hilton

Yesterday, CNN proudly announced that it has scored the first post-jail interview with Paris Hilton. To make room for Paris on Wednesday, CNN canceled its interview with Michael Moore about his new health care documentary SiCKO:

CNN, the "most trusted name in Paris news," continues to sink to new lows in its "assault on reason." Hilton is the latest "serial obsession," though the network recently hired a reporter devoted to "covering things like Britney, as well as the Michael Jackson memorabilia." Now CNN has ditched coverage of America's broken health care system in favor of an hour-long interview of an incarcerated socialite.

ThinkProgress spoke with Moore's team, who confirmed that CNN has not yet rescheduled the interview. SiCKO, which opens nationwide this Friday, sheds light on the health care crisis that the media covers poorly, when it covers it at all.

Jokes aside, they say the Mayan (or Atzec) calender is the most accurate ever made. Their doomsday is not so much about the end of time, but of the beginning or dawn of a new age of enlightenment. I think it's worth a gander.

There is a common belief that the calendar holds a prophecy that the end of the world will happen in 2012. At the time, I knew very little about the whole topic and when I began doing the research. I like to think I had an open mind. My investigation began with mainstream archaeology and the expert interpretations of the calendar. But it soon took a turn that made my hair literally stand on end. I am now convinced that these prophecies are true.

To understand what is likely to happen to Earth and it's people, you will need to remain calm and try to follow the facts. It's not as simple as some people describe. It requires an understanding of some fairly complicated scientific realities, but I think I can explain them in a way that you will easily understand.

20 Tips for More Efficient Google Searches

But instead of just typing in a phrase and wading through page after page of results, there are a number of ways to make your searches more efficient.

Backlinks. The "link:" operator will find pages that link to a specific URL. You can use this not only for a main URL but even to a specific page. Not all links to an URL are listed, however.

Numrange. This little-known feature searches for a range of numbers. For example, ["best books 2002..2007] will return lists of best books for each of the years from 2002 to 2007 (note the two periods between the two numbers).

Calculator. One of the handiest uses of Google, type in a quick calculation in the search box and get an answer. It's faster than calling up your computer's calculator in most cases. Use the +, -, *, / symbols and parentheses to do a simple equation.

Definitions. Use the "define:" operator to get a quick definition. [define:dumb] will give you a whole host of definitions from different sources, with links.

Survey: 70% of of Users Disappointed With Marketing Efforts in Second Life

according to a new survey by Komjuniti, a Hamburg, Germany, research firm. Second Lifers see a lot of the companies as simply opportunistic and not really interested in developing a long-term presence in Second Life that benefits its inhabitants.

“The brand sites on Second Life currently look like they’re being treated in pretty much the same way as [traditional] advertising campaigns,” said Dr. Nils Andres, managing director of Komjuniti to Brandweek. They have been “placed with the hope of getting high visitor frequency and good PR scores.”

“They expect more creativity, more inspiration, and not vertical influence the old and traditional way of the 60-second spot,” said Andres.

Catherine Smith, Linden Labs’ Director of Marketing, says

“If you are not authentic and do not offer anything to the community, you are likely to be ignored”, she said.

The virtual world phenomenon of Second Life will transform the Internet within the next 10 years, and the browser will have to change just as fast to keep up, said Mozilla's Window Snyder.

"Once upon a time, your browser was just text and images," said Snyder. "Now, it's incredibly rich and it has Java, ActiveX, and Ajax. Client-side applications are executing in your browser. It's already so far away from text and images. In 10 years, it will be more about this first-person avatar-based 3-D experience."

Just an hour or so after joining, "you'll notice that several residents approach you and introduce themselves," the website promises. "Within this vibrant society of people, it's easy to find people with similar interests.... Once you meet people you like, you find it's easy to communicate and stay in touch."

In the context of this universe, communicating and staying in touch have decidedly nontraditional meanings. You can link with your online associates to hang out at a nightclub, take in a fashion show, attend an art opening, or play games. It could be the start of a virtual friendship. The gift of virtual chicken soup delivered by a friendly avatar, though, won't go down like the real thing.
