The Apple Strategy in One Single Word

There’s a single word that summarize the recent apple strategy.
And the word is Absence.

iMac

no printer port

no floppy disk (in 1998!)

iPod Shuffle

No screen.

Mac Mini

No monitor
No keybord
No mouse

iPhone

No keybord
No stylus

Do you notice something?

Apple removes things.
And give to the user what he needs, with simplicity embedded.

Other companies are always trying to add new features to their products

Our new mouse has 5 full-customizable buttons and 3 weels!

they add tons of useless features, but nobody thinks to remove the old (s)crap!

Do you realize that Microsoft “A Breakthrough Computing Experience” Vista comes with MS Paint installed? The same MS paint you used with Windows 3.1!
That’s ages ago!
They add, add, add and what you get is a stupid 7gb OS with MS Paint! And I don’t want to think about the code inside their DLLs…

In HW and SW markets things change really fast… devices and patterns move at such an hight rate that well established standard become old in few years… Companies should learn that what was good 6 months ago now it’s useless and can be removed to expand and explore new stuff.

So, the next time you’re doing Product Development and brainstorming about your new product or your new sw release, don’t ask “What can we add to make our product better” as the first question, try something like

What can be removed from our product to make it better?

Head of Apple Retail Ron Johnson gave some insight into the planning behind the Boylston Street location. The spot was picked out in 2000, but took eight years of planning to get it built. Because of Apple's recent success, the store has grown significantly from what was originally planned.

The first floor is all Mac, the company's "most important product" according to Johnson. Floor two is dedicated to iPod, iPhone and all the third party accessories Apple offers. The third floor is dedicated to service, with a massive Genius Bar, sections for one-on-one, workshops and a second location for Apple's new "Pro Labs" initiative.

The Genius Bar, which boasts 17 black stools, can serve 1,000 people per day at full capacity, with the store open from 8AM to 11PM.

The store is also environmentally friendly, with vegetation on the roof and a rainwater recollection system which directs water from the roof directly into the Back Bay water table.

The store opens tomorrow, Thursday the 15th, at 6PM.

Big man surgically alters thumbs to use iPhone

Thomas Martel, 28, of Bonnie Brae is a big guy. So he has a hard time using the features on ever-shrinking user interfaces on devices like his new iPhone. At least, he did, until he had his thumbs surgically altered in a revolutionary new surgical technique known as "whittling."

"This is really, on the edge sort of stuff," explains Dr. Robert Fox Spars, who worked on developing the procedure. "We're turning plastic surgery from something that people use in service of vanity, to a real tool for improving workplace efficiency."

The procedure involved making a small incision into both thumbs and shaving down the bones, followed by careful muscular alteration and modification of the fingernails. While Martel's new thumbs now appear small and effeminate in comparison to his otherwise very large hands, he says he can still lift "pretty much anything I could lift before the surgery - though opening spaghetti sauce jars has been a problem. That was a big surprise."

Jamais Cascio at Open the Future is on to something big with a new concept he calls the Participatory Decepticon, the yang to the yin that is the Participatory Panopticon. The general idea is that we’re beginning to see instances of modified/corrupted video content that can greatly benefit the deceiver via a spike of monetizable attention.

“Such a deception wouldn’t stand for very long, but would almost certainly last long enough set off a wave of furious blog posts and mainstream media attention,” argues Cascio, citing political videos as an example.

Having been burned by fake news like the iphone face-to-face talk photos and having seen many a critical thinker hoodwinked by April Fool’s blog posts I certainly agree that this Decepticon is in its nascency. The corruption, camoflaging, variation seems to indicate a new type of evolutionary internet-based memetic/temetic/content mechanism at work

Add a Google Reader sidebar

This is good news even if you don’t have an iPhone. Like other web apps designed for the iPhone interface, it fits very well in Firefox (and other browsers) sidebar.

And it’s pretty simple:

Open the Bookmarks Manager (Bookmarks/Organize Bookmarks…)
In Firefox 2, in the File menu, select New bookmark… In Firefox 3, press Organize in the toolbar and select New bookmark…
Enter a name, http://www.google.com/reader/i/ for location, and ensure to check Load this bookmark in the sidebar.
Press Save Changes and now you can select the bookmark to load Google Reader in the sidebar.

The Metaverse Roadmap Overview, an exploration of imminent 3D technologies, posited a number of different scenarios of what a future "metaverse" could look like.

The four scenarios -- augmented reality, life-logging, virtual worlds, and mirror worlds -- each offered a different manifestation of an immersive 3D world.

Of the four, I suspect that augmented reality is most likely to be widespread soon;

moreover, when it hits, it's going to have a surprisingly big impact.

Augmented reality (AR) can be thought of as a combination of widely-accessible sensors (including cameras), lightweight computing technologies, and near-ubiquitous high-speed wireless networks -- a combination that's well-underway -- along with a sophisticated form of visualization that layers information over the physical world.

Imagine holding up an iPhone-like device, scanning what's around you, seeing various pop-up items and data links on your screen.

That's something like what an early AR system might look like

Employees at Apple have filed a patent for integrating solar cells into portable devices by placing them underneath the layers of a touch-sensitive display, according to the filing.

Solar power could help make devices truly portable, freeing from the need for wires to connect them to a power supply.

With this number of available tracks Napster has now become the world’s largest major label MP3 catalog and the largest library of independent music worldwide.

Beginning today, all digital music that is downloaded from Napster will be a DRM-free MP3 that is compatible with any MP3 player or music phone, including yes you guessed it right, the iPod and the iPhone. Downloaded music will remain at 99 cents for a single track and $9.95 for most full albums. Most of Napster’s digital music is encoded at a 256kbps bitrate and shall include album art. In addition, users can freely browse Napster’s catalog without any obligation or commitment to purchase. Napster is also offering a web-based on-demand streaming service which users can access from anywhere using computer with Internet connection.

Leave it to the MIT Media Lab to come up with a concept as innovative as this. The Bar of Soap is a prototype gadget that figures out what it’s supposed to be doing based on the way you’re holding it. So, if you pick it up and hold it like a camera, it’ll operate like a camera. Hold it like a cellphone, and it becomes a cellphone. TV remote, MP3 player, whatever… As long as you hold it in a unique manner (and research suggests that people have clearly distinguishable ways of holding different gadgets), it can theoretically be anything you want. The unit itself is a plastic block, with a touchscreen, an accelerometer, 72 touch sensors, and internal bluetooth. At the moment, it’s not offering much in the way of functionality, since it’s designed to test the grasp classification concept (currently, it’s about 95% accurate at knowing what you want)
