Ex-Gurkhas lose pensions battle

Former Gurkha soldiers have lost their High Court battle over a pensions deal with the British Government they say has left them struggling to live.

Lawyers for the three - Kumar Shrestha, Kamal Purja and Sambahadur Gurung, all in their late 30s and retired because of ill health - argued they had been treated unlawfully and unfairly.

They said men who enlisted before July 1997 but retired after had been denied equal pensions because their years of service up to that date were valued at only between 24% and 36% of British rates.

The Gurkhas complained that the new pension transfer arrangements enacted last year were irrational and discriminated against them on the grounds of age.

The case is the latest in a series of legal battles over the rights of Gurkhas, who come from Nepal and have fought and died in the service of the Crown for almost 200 years, winning 13 Victoria Crosses.

Boy shared beheadings video clip

A 12-year-old white schoolboy is among 120 people dealt with by police in a new project combating Islamic extremism, it has been revealed.

The child, who has not been named, was reported by his school in West Yorkshire after he was found circulating horrifying video clips of terrorists beheading Westerners.

Sick films were distributed to classmates on their mobile phones, prompting his teacher to contact the authorities. The 12-year-old is now being handled under a scheme known as the Channel Project.

Sir Norman said: "The white child that we are working with has been downloading Jihadist beheading videos and circulating them around school.

"That was bad enough, but he also has an unnatural interest in guns and weapons. He had come to our attention and we are working with him and his father and his school."

The number of suspects so far uncovered was "higher than expected", he added.

It's a funny, and telling, statement on the world of criminal activity: According to a survey from anti-virus maker AVG Technologies, consumers are now more afraid, by a wide margin, of being victimized by cybercrime than they are of offline crimes—crimes which could cause them real, physical harm—like burglary or assault.

In a survey of 1,000 U.S. computer users this March, 57 percent said they felt they were likely to be victims of a computer crime, about three times as many who felt they would be victims of a burglary and five times as many who thought they would be physically assaulted.

Despite the fears, a full 15 percent of those surveyed said they didn't know when security software was installed on their PCs.

lorries in go slow protest

About 100 disgruntled lorry drivers and other motorists took part in a go-slow fuel protest on the M6.

Up to 80 lorries, along with vans, cars, motorbikes and a caravan, set off at 9am under police escort from Lymm Services at Warrington, Cheshire to Carnforth, 60 miles north in Lancashire.

Tony Burridge, who organised the protest, said he believed the demonstration was the biggest go-slow fuel protest on the motorway since the first fuel demonstrations began in 2000.

Mr Burridge, 50, a logistics manager from Preston, said: "We are hoping the strength of feeling shown during today's go-slow will persuade the Government to reduce fuel duty.

"Today's go-slow wasn't organised by a professional organisation, it was organised by myself and my friends because we felt we should show support to our friends who are suffering."

In Hampshire about 100 tractors, farm vehicles and lorries embarked on a go-slow fuel protest through the New Forest.

Truckers are set to hold a six-hour motorway fuel protest.

Around 100 lorries are set to be used in the go-slow on the M6 on Saturday which is likely to cause gridlock on the motorway network in the North West of England.

The protest will start around 9am at Lymm truck stop in Cheshire, with the lorries travelling in convey north, up the M6 at 40mph.

When they reach junction 35 at Carnforth, Lancashire, they will turn back and travel down the M6 southbound, to compete the 120 mile trip.

The lorry drivers' protest over rising fuel costs comes as drivers of Shell fuel tankers go on strike over pay, with refineries being picketed.

Police forces in Lancashire, Cheshire , Greater Manchester and Merseyside have met Highways Agency officials to discuss how to handle the go-slow protest.

Traffic officers have warned some motorway junctions will close while the convoy travels up and down the M6.

It is not known exactly how many vehicles will be involved.

Hundreds of fuel tanker drivers have begun a four-day strike in a row over pay, picketing Shell sites across the UK.

The industrial action began after talks between the Unite union and managers from two firms which deliver fuel to Shell garages broke down amid fears it could cause petrol shortages.

Striking tanker drivers mounted picket lines at a number of Shell sites based at oil terminals including Stanlow in Merseyside, Avonmouth, Plymouth, Pembroke, Cardiff, Kingsbury, Basildon, Grangemouth, Aberdeen, Inverness, Jarrow and a small site at Luton Airport.

The strike will affect one in 10 of Britain's 9,500 filling stations, but the Government and the oil and transport industries have urged motorists not to panic-buy fuel.

Officials from the Unite union and managers from two firms which deliver fuel to Shell garages held more than nine hours of talks on Thursday to try to break the deadlocked dispute, following 10 hours of negotiations on Wednesday.

A pall bearer who claimed £60,000 in disability benefits after claiming he struggled to walk has been given a suspended jail sentence.

Leslie Webb, 61, had told the Department of Work and Pensions it took him 10 minutes to walk 50 yards and claimed he suffered from limited movement.

Yet he was able to walk with a coffin on his shoulders, was also a bowls club president and had even set up his own taxi firm.

Webb, of Gloucester, claimed £17,000 of disability living allowance between 1994 and 2005, and £43,000 of incapacity benefit between 1996 and 2005, Gloucester Crown Court heard during the trial.

Recorder Henry accepted Webb had Crohn's disease and spondylosis - a spinal disease.

The court was told Webb had a hip replacement in 1995 and bowel operation two years later.

James Tucker, defending, said Webb did not have a "lavish lifestyle" and now received no benefits at all.

Webb will learn in August how much money is to be seized from him under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

motorway death crash

Police are due to hold a media conference this afternoon after spending hours questioning a professional footballer over a motorway crash that killed two young brothers.

Sky sources have named the footballer as Plymouth Argyle's 24-year-old goalkeeper Luke McCormick.

He is a former England youth international and twice voted Argyle's young player of the season.

He was detained after the accident on the M6 in North Staffordshire yesterday morning.

The crash happened between junctions 15 and 16 of the motorway near Keele Services in Staffordshire shortly before 5.45am.

A silver Toyota Previa people carrier left the southbound carriageway and hit trees after it was in collision with a black Range Rover.

One of the boys was confirmed dead at the scene. His brother was later confirmed dead at hospital.

Their father, the 37-year-old driver of the Toyota, was taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in a serious condition but his injuries are not life-threatening.
