Forget government corruption or corporate fraud.

Reps. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii, Lynn Westmoreland, R-Ga., and Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, are introducing a resolution rejecting the oft-criticized bowl system as an illegal restriction on trade because only the largest universities compete in most of the major bowl games.

The measure also would put Congress on record as supporting a college football playoff.

Abercrombie said the matter is worthy of federal review because college football is big business with hundreds of millions of dollars at stake.

But it's no coincidence that all three lawmakers have home-state schools with recent beefs against the bowl system.

The University of Hawaii and Boise State University in Idaho each had an undefeated season in recent years, but were denied a shot at the championship. And Westmoreland said he is still smarting about his University of Georgia Bulldogs being passed over for the national championship game last year.

clipper's remarks: I'd wondered how he came to the conclusion that his videotaping was legal, and now I finally know. Of course, the fact that he continued the videotaping after getting the memo with the official interpretation shows a complete lack of respect for the rules (and possibly for rules in general unless they work in his favor). Good thing the Pats lost the Super Bowl.

As reported by ESPN in September 2007, Belichick privately admitted to Goodell that videotaping opposing team's defensive signals had been his standard practice since he became the New England coach in 2000. Belichick argued that he believed he was within the letter of the rule, as long as he did not use the material on game day.

The commissioner rejected the interpretation, and also cited a league memo distributed prior to the start of the season that specified teams were not to engage in such practice.

"I think it'll be cool," said Don Yeomans, who heads the Near-Earth Object Program at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "Usually when an asteroid is headed toward Earth, I'm not rooting for an impact."

The space rock, known as the nondescript 2007 WD5, was discovered in late November by the NASA-funded Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona. Based on the latest information available, scientists said

last week there was a 1-in-75 chance the asteroid could hit Mars on Jan. 30.

The odds were increased to 1-in-25 this week after a Ph.D. student pored through the archives and plotted the asteroid's motions before its official discovery. The new information allowed scientists to improve their calculations of the asteroid's orbit and flight path.

Bengals fans might feel like they're living in Cleveland on Sunday because of the massive contingent of Browns fans invading Paul Brown Stadium when the teams meet for the 69th time.

Mark Klang is president of Amazing Tickets, a broker based in downtown Cleveland. He said sales suggest upwards of 15,000 Browns fans will be in attendance at PBS. Many Bengals fans are going through agencies such as his to sell their tickets for a profit. "Seventy-five dollar tickets are going for $125," Klang said.

WONE radio personality Mark Schlemmer wears his love for the Bengals — and disdain for the Browns — on his sleeve. He loathes the thought of Bengals fans selling their tickets just to make a buck.

"That's your home-field advantage that you're giving away. But that's the difference in Cleveland fans and Pittsburgh fans. They stay in their own stadium. Bengals fans will jump the first chance they get. I'm not a Browns or Steelers fan, but I admire their fans for having loyalty."

perspective I'll bet you can recite most of the copyright warnings that appear on your screen when you pop in a DVD, or at the end of football game, can't you?

Did it ever occur to you that, in many cases, these serious, ubiquitous warnings may not actually be accurate?

Perhaps they've just been around so long that they've been accepted as fact, but in many cases, as very recently pointed out by the Computer and Communications Industry Association, they are at best misleading and, at worst, flat-out wrong.

The group filed a formal complaint with the Federal Trade Commission earlier this month against some of the worst offenders--among them, NBC Universal, Major League Baseball and the National Football League--alleging that the statements used by these corporations often include gross misrepresentations of federal law and characterize as unlawful acts that are explicitly permitted by law. NBC Universal immediately characterized the complaint as "frivolous,"

Black football player gets threats for marrying white cheerleader

Johnson and Chrissy Popadics, the cheerleader he proposed to after scoring the winning points in the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma, were married Saturday in a traditional ceremony at the Cathedral of the Rockies First United Methodist Church.

Johnson, who is black, has said he received phone calls and about 30 letters, including personal threats from people who objected to his plans to marry his white fiancee. Johnson has not described the threats, and it is unclear where they came from.

The National Football League and newspapers are in a tiff — one that you probably haven't heard about. The NFL has decided that sideline photographers now have to wear vests that promote Canon and Reebok.

The league says the vests, which are used at other sports events including the Olympics, are being required for security reasons — to identify legitimate photographers — and that the logos are unobtrusive.

In a letter to the NFL, the American Society of Newspaper Editors president said: "Newspapers are committed to maintaining their integrity as independent voices of news and opinion. We separate advertising messages in our pages from news and editorial content for that reason. We work assiduously to avoid conflicts of interest, or appearances of them. For that reason, it is an anathema to us that our employees should be put in the position of becoming walking billboards."

Is Painting Still Like Photography?

In the days before photography permitted instant capture of a scene, arists would be paid to sketch or paint an event or scene and copies of that rendition would appear in broadsheets and other newspaper predecessors. Even today we have sketch artists on courtrooms where photographers are not permitted.

So the question, then, is this: if a painter depicts an actual event or scene is that creative work protected in the same way as a photograph of the event would be?

This is the question being asked by painter Daniel A. Moore, because he is being sued by the University of Alabama which claims that his paintings of Alabama football game scenes violate the University's trademark "crimson and white color scheme".

Moore has been painting football scenes for years, so it's not clear why he's being sued now. He claims to have made millions from paintings and reproductions of them; the University won't comment but seems to have taken umbrage at Moore's move into more merchandise-like things such as mugs and calendars.

Moore doesn't stand on the gridiron sidelines and paint as the action happens - he works from photos and his own experience of the event. One of the contentions raised by the University is that this means his paintings contain no (or not enough) original content to be protected by separate copyright.

Just about everyone in the Times story seems to think this is a dumb lawsuit but mostly on social grounds; it's not clear to me where this falls out from a purely legal standpoint.
