Hasta La Vista, Arnold!

In spite of the poor reception for "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," plans are being made for a "Terminator 4" movie, which may be the beginning of a new trilogy. If all goes well, the fourth installment will be released in theaters in the summer of 2009.

As has happened with the Batman movies, the producers plan to reinvent the Terminator franchise with a new cast and new stories.

The script for "Terminator 4" has already been written by John Brancato and Michael Ferris, who wrote "Terminator 3." It will feature a 30-something John Connor leading what's left of the human race against violent and oppressive machines that have taken over the world.

As this is being planned, the pilot for "The Sarah Connor Chronicles," an hour-long TV drama based on the Terminator characters and mythology, is getting positive feedback from the Fox network. Word on whether or not it will be picked up as a series is expected to come out in the next few days.

Work is beginning on a sequel to the audience-loved, but critically cool "Superman Returns," and yes, Bryan Singer is back to bring the Man of Steel back to movie audiences again.

"Bryan Singer is working on the story, and hopefully, that will be a script by the end of the year," said Jon Peters, a producer on the first film, according to the Mania Web site, as well as The Hollywood Reporter.

In fact, pre-production past the story could take place as early as the beginning of 2009, Peters said.

Novelist gives away film rights to book -- sort of

While movie rights are a huge portion of an author's income in the current environment, I think it may actually be in the interest of an obscure author to let people allude to and rip off their work in order to establish a reputation among the general population.

On May 15th I’ll give away a free option on the film rights to my novel You Don’t Love Me Yet to a selected filmmaker. In return for the free option, I’ll ask two things:

I’d like the filmmaker to pay (something) for the purchase of the rights if they actually make a film: two percent of the budget, paid when the completed film gets a distribution deal.

The filmmaker and I will make an agreement to release all ancillary rights to the film (and its source material, the novel), five years after the film’s debut. In other words, after a waiting period during which those rights would still be restricted, anyone who cared to could make any number of other kinds of artwork based on the novel’s story and characters, or the film’s: a play, a television series, a comic book, a theme park ride, an opera – or even a sequel film or novel featuring the same characters.

Ice chess players race against thaw in Moscow, London

MOSCOW (AFP) - The chess pieces started disappearing from the board before the game even got going -- and it had nothing to do with the skill of the Russian and British teams playing in a video relay match.

The pieces were made of ice and both teams, playing on giant boards in Pushkinskaya Square in Moscow and Trafalgar Square in London, were given a time limit of just 30 seconds for each move, as the sculptures steadily melted.

Unseasonally warm winters in both Moscow and London, where temperatures hovered at around five and 12 degrees Celsius (48 and 53 degrees Fahrenheit) respectively, gave a special sense of urgency to the hour-long game Thursday.

One of the pieces, a king fashioned to resemble a Kremlin tower, had already partially melted away before the game began, losing its emblematic Soviet star.

The game, in which Russian and British chessmasters Anatoly Karpov and Nigel Short faced off alongside celebrities and budding chess talents, ended in a draw.

'Indiana Jones' to be filmed next year

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - George Lucas said Friday that filming of the long-awaited "Indiana Jones" movie will begin next year. Harrison Ford, who appeared in the three earlier flicks, the last one coming in 1989, is set to star again. Lucas said he and Steven Spielberg recently finalized the script for the film.

Exact film locations have not been decided yet, but Lucas said part of the movie will be shot in Los Angeles.

The fourth chapter of the "Indiana Jones" saga, which will hit theaters in May 2008, has been in development for over a decade with several screenwriters taking a crack at the script, but it only recently gained momentum.

Lucas kept mum about the plot, but said that the latest action flick will be a "character piece" that will include "very interesting mysteries."

At the inaugural Rome Film Festival in October, the 64-year-old Ford said he was excited to team up with Lucas and Spielberg again for the fourth "Indiana Jones" installment. Ford said he was "fit to continue" to play the title role despite his age.

Lucas praised Ford for breathing life into his character.

"Mostly it's the charm of Harrison that makes it work," he said.

Robert Jordan's illness

Most of me feels a great deal of sympathy for someone stricken by such a horrible disease, but part of me also wants to say, "Don't you wish you hadn't dragged this series out now, Bob?"

There are readers, and then there are fans. Readers offer condolences when a favorite author falls ill. Fans offer bone marrow.

Robert Jordan, author of the best-selling Wheel of Time series, has fans. And if you want to understand them, take a look at his blog. Since last spring, when he announced he had a rare blood disease called amyloidosis, Jordan, 58, has been chronicling his life-and-death struggle online. Whenever he's well enough to write, he thanks the fans who sent care packages, and those who donated to the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minn., where he is being treated. Then there's this: "For Jaime Platt and her sister, your offer touches me deeply. They were able to harvest enough of my own bone marrow stem cells that I don't need marrow donation from elsewhere, but thank you very much. That was a kind and generous offer."

And you thought Harry Potter fans were enthusiastic?

Jordan's readers are offering help because they've developed a close connection with him through his books. They're also desperately hoping he lives to finish the series. Wheel of Time is like Lord of the Rings on steroids. Since Jordan launched the series in 1990, he's added another ten books, and more than 14 million copies have sold. Fans are patiently waiting for book No. 12, A Memory of Light, which Jordan promises will be the last, even if it reaches 2,000 pages. "I've told people you might need a forklift to get it out the door," says Jordan, speaking by phone from his home in South Carolina.

Jordan's fans are full of sympathy, but also fright of a more personal and perhaps selfish kind. His readers have been following the lives of Rand, Egwene, Elayne, Mat, Nynaeve and Perrin for more than 16 years. Fans have shared their concerns on Web sites like Dragonmount, Theoryland and WOTmania. "Of course you wouldn't ever wish a possibly terminal disease on anyone," wrote one poster, codman25. "But what happens if he doesn't finish the book?"

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Warren Sapp is a very picky eater.

The Oakland Raiders' defensive tackle refuses to eat out on team trips for fear of getting sick, and he's not talking about the rare case of food poisoning.

Sapp insisted Wednesday his food was tampered with during his nine-year tenure in Tampa Bay from 1995-2003.

"You get your food poisoned," Sapp said at Raiders headquarters. "They don't want you out there on Sunday. You don't think about it. It just got crazy."

He pointed specifically to three incidents: Before the NFC Championship Game in Philadelphia at the end of the 2002 season, which the Bucs won en route to the Super Bowl title; before a divisional playoff game at Green Bay in January 1998; and at New Orleans, where the Bucs played a game during the 1998 season.

"I know it's real, especially in Philly, come on," said Sapp, long an unpopular figure in the NFL for his play and his mouth.

During his time with Tampa Bay, Sapp even went so far as to book two hotel rooms -- one under an alias -- so he could order room service and not worry about his food.

Sapp, who turns 34 next month, said he requested bottles of water with the cap still on.

"You have to, though," Sapp said of being cautious. "It's either that or feel bad."

O.J.: 'If I Did It' book not a confession to murder

LOS ANGELES -- O.J. Simpson told The Associated Press he participated in the ill-fated "If I Did It" book and interview project for one reason -- personal profit, and he acknowledged that any financial gain was "blood money."

"This was an opportunity for my kids to get their financial legacy," Simpson said in interviews this week with the AP after the book deal was abandoned by its publisher. "My kids understand. I made it clear that it's blood money, but it's no different than any of the other writers who did books on this case."

The book, said to describe how he theoretically would have committed the murders of ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman, had been scheduled for release Nov. 30 following the airing of a two-part Simpson interview on Fox on Monday and Wednesday.

News Corp., owner of Fox Broadcasting and publisher HarperCollins, canceled the project after a public outcry and objections by advertisers and booksellers.

In a radio interview Wednesday, Simpson said the project was not a confession.

"I made it clear from the first day I met the writer that I wasn't involved," Simpson said on Miami's WTPS-AM. "I said, 'I have nothing to confess.'"

Goldman's family, meanwhile, asked News Corp. to turn over its rights to the now-canceled book and interview, an attorney said Wednesday.

In two AP telephone interviews this week from his Florida home, Simpson declined to say how much of an advance he received for the book but said it was less than the $3.5 million that had been reported. He said the money has already been spent, including some he used to meet tax obligations.
