clipper's remarks: According to the report in the BMC Evolutionary Biology journal, one theory is that the fish may occasionally be taking some of the DNA from the males that trigger reproduction, in order to refresh their gene pool.

Dr Laurence Loewe, of the university's School of Biological Sciences, said: "What we have shown now is that this fish really has something special going on and that some special tricks exist to help this fish survive.

"Maybe there is still occasional sex with strangers that keeps the species alive. Future research may give us some answers."

An all-girl species of fish which has survived for 70,000 years without the aid of sexual reproduction is defying the laws of evolution, new research shows.

British scientists say the Amazon Molly fish ought by rights to be extinct but may be employing special genetic survival "tricks".

The all-female fish interact sexually with males of other species to trigger a bizarre reproduction known as gynogenesis.

The male fishes' sperm sparks the development of an embryo, but none of the male DNA appears to be passed on to the offspring. Only the mother's genes are inherited.

The species is still thriving in rivers in south-east Texas and north-east Mexico, but are named "Amazons" after the all-women warriors of Greek myth.

Working with San Francisco college student James Gregory, 21, who suffers from chronic pain as the result of a car accident, the two created the Pain Exhibit, an online gallery of art from pain sufferers. The images are evocative and troubling.“Some of them are painful even to look at,'’ Dr. Basbaum said.

Finding ways to communicate pain is essential to patients who are suffering, many of whom don’t receive adequate treatment from doctors.Mr. Collen said the main goal of the exhibit is to raise awareness about the problem of chronic pain.“People don’t believe what they can’t see,'’ Mr. Collen said. “But they see a piece of art an individual created about their pain and everything changes.'’

Today is April 22nd which means it’s Earth Day in many countries around the World. It all started in 1970 when the first Earth Day was celebrated to coincide with the environmental movement. Around the web you’ll find a handful of different sites celebrating the day by changing their logo. Social Web Browser Flock even launched a new “Eco-edition” of their browser just in time for the day. It’s got lots of green and comes with some pre-loaded content for those that are conscious of the environment.

Your DNA falls into the realm of "the world's information," and it seems that Google (GOOG), as part of its corporate mission, is making a play to organize that, too. The Internet giant received heavy press in 2007 when it invested at least $4.4 million (BusinessWeek.com, 11/29/07) in a genetic screening company, 23andMe, that was started by Anne Wojcicki, the wife of Google co-founder Sergey Brin, and her business partner.

Much in the way it invested in 23andMe, Google wants to plant an early stake in a potentially large new market around genetic data. "We are interested in supporting companies and making investments in companies that [bolster] our mission statement, which is organizing the world's information and making it universally accessible and useful," Google spokesman Andrew Pederson says

New shoes that grow with children's feet

It's an expensive exercise keeping children in shoes, as any parent would attest.

All too often, the little darlings are bursting out of their new ones before the soles have been scuffed.

But one inventor claims to have found the solution - shoes that grow with the feet.

The INCHworm trainers use a technology called iFit to expand up to one full size.

They are altered by pressing a button on the side and pulling the toe out to the required length.

Each pair goes up in two half-size increments, which means that each offers three sizes.

According to the makers, the shoes are sturdy enough that they won't stretch accidentally and can withstand the roughest of playground workouts.

They are not cheap, at £47.99 including delivery.

However, the patented technology means that each pair would last about three to six months longer than a normal pair.

They are also great for the thousands of kids who have one foot bigger than the other - they could have one shoe set at size 11 and one at 11 and a half.

Scientists say they have captured a supermassive black hole just as it was belching out a jet of supercharged particles, offering a first look at how these cosmic jets form.

Supermassive black holes form the core of many galaxies and astronomers have long believed they are responsible for ejecting jets of particles at nearly the speed of light.

But just how they do it has remained a mystery.

researchers led by Professor Alan Marscher of Boston University

Marscher's team aimed the US National Radio Astronomy Observatory's Very Long Baseline Array, a system of 10 radio telescopes, at the galaxy BL Lacertae

What they saw was a close up of this charged material winding in corkscrew fashion out of the supermassive black hole, behaving just as astronomers have predicted

We have gotten the clearest look yet at the innermost portion of the jet, where the particles actually are accelerated

An American woman has been left with a British accent after having a stroke.

This is despite the fact that Tiffany Roberts, 61, has never been to Britain. Her accent is a mixture of English cockney and West Country.

Doctors say Mrs Roberts, who was born and bred in Indiana, has a condition called foreign accent syndrome.
