When her 21-year-old daughter died in a sledding accident in early 2007, Pam Weiss had never logged onto Facebook. Back then, it was used almost exclusively by the young, like her daughter Amy, a student at UCLA. But Weiss knew her daughter had an account, so in her grief she turned to the social-networking site to look for photos. She found what she was looking for, and more — she was soon communicating with her daughter's many friends, sharing memories and even piecing together a blueprint of things Amy had hoped to do in the future through posts she'd written. "It makes me feel good that Amy had a positive effect on so many people, and I wouldn't have had a clue if it hadn't been for Facebook," says Weiss.

A Beach On Mars

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's HiRISE—High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment—camera has captured one of the most beautiful photographs of Mars to date: An oblique view—at 22 degrees east of straight down—of the Victoria Crater, in the Meridiani Planum region.

Click on the image to enlarge to see all the incredible detail. Warning, it's huge and takes time to load.

According to NASA, this unique angle will give scientist a great opportunity to study the geological layers in this area. It looks like a dried lake to me—of course is not—but that's just my ignorant untrained eye making things up. [NASA]

You'll have to do a few things to get in the action. First, of course, you'll have to become a legal resident of Australia. The DIAC website can help you with the process. Once you've checked that off, you also have to follow @tengrand_IE8 on Twitter to get the daily clues and then put on your Columbo trench coat and use IE8 to uncover the road to riches.

Gotta love the tagline they used: "But you'll never find it using old Firefox (So get rid of it, or get lost.)"

I know it's a contest to promote their own browser and it makes sense to use proprietary features to ensure people are actually using IE8, but how Microsoft is that? "This is the most compliant Internet Explorer yet, but we're running our least compliant contest ever using it! Yeeeeeeeeeehaw!"

Wouldn't we all love it if the winner used Firefox and IETab to pull off a win? To quote Bart Simpson, "The ironing is delicious."

This isn't a plane shot, that's a window view from Burj Dubai

Should we care, the fact that all of their ostentatious buildings are made with what amounts to slave labor is a reason to care.

Dubai citizens make up less than 17% of the population, the remainder are imported workers. Some are westerners who make good money. The majority, however, are Indian and a scattering of others from that region and are kept in virtual slavery.

Sex slavery, of course, is rampant with tens of thousands of women lured there with the promise of domestic work and other legitimate employment.

Giant spider eating a bird

Nature Imitates Man?

Such is the strength of the design of the spider web that it has been adapted in to much of our own architecture. Sometimes the spiders seem to get their ideas from us, but that really isn’t the case! The thread that spiders produce come from glands called spinnerets. There are, so far, seven different types of spinnerets that have been identified and each one has a separate purpose. Each type of spider will possess a few of these spinneret glands, but there has never been a recorded case of a spider having all seven types!

Where did this happen?

The photographer was sure that he was going to see the end of his huskies when the polar bear materialized out of the blue, as it were: But something else happened. The Polar Bear returned every night that week to play with the dogs...

Customer: “I’ll have two boxes of cockporn please.”

(There was a two second pause as the customer’s eyes went wide with horror…and then I started to laugh. He got the popcorn and ran upstairs, with me standing behind the counter with tears running down my face.)

Tallest vehicular bridge in the world

The Millau Viaduct is a large cable-stayed road-bridge that spans the valley of the River Tarn near Millau in southern France. Designed by the structural engineer Michel Virlogeux, it is the tallest vehicular bridge in the world, with one mast's summit at 343 metres (1,125 ft) — slightly taller than the Eiffel Tower and only 38 m (125 ft) shorter than the Empire State Building. The viaduct is part of the A75-A71 autoroute axis from Paris to Béziers. It was formally dedicated on 14 December 2004 and opened to traffic two days later.

APPLETON, Wisc. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A couple telephoned police in the middle of the night after finding a man in their basement covered head to toe in barbecue sauce.

"He told the officers that it was urban camouflage," said the homeowner.

This happened in Wisconsin.

The homeowners say they woke up to whistling sounds.

The husband grabbed his shotgun and headed toward the basement where he found the sauced-up intruder.

He held him at gunpoint until police arrived.

The guy told officers he covered himself in barbecue sauce because he wanted to hide from the government.

He now faces burglary charges.

A baby hippopotamus that survived the tsunami waves on the Kenyan coast has formed a strong bond with a giant male century-old tortoise in an animal facility in the port city of Mombassa , officials said The hippopotamus, nicknamed Owen and weighing about 300 kilograms (650 pounds), was swept down Sabaki River into the Indian Ocean, then forced back to shore when tsunami waves struck the Kenyan coast on December 26, before wildlife rangers rescued him.

It is incredible. A-less-than-a-year-old hippo has adopted a male tortoise, about a century old, and the tortoise seems to be very happy with being a 'mother'," ecologist Paula Kahumbu, who is in charge of Lafarge Park , told AFP.

After it was swept away and lost its mother, the hippo was traumatized. It had to look for something to be a surrogate mother. Fortunately , it landed on the tortoise and established a strong bond. They swim, eat and sleep together," the ecologist added.

In June 1958, Cambridge awoke to see a car perched at the apex of an inaccessible rooftop, looking as if it were driving across the skyline.

The spectacle made headlines around the world and left police, firefighters and civil defence units battling for nearly a week to hoist the vehicle back down before giving in and taking it to pieces with blowtorches.

The shadowy group of engineering students who executed the stunt were never identified and the mystery of how they did it has baffled successive undergraduates and provided fodder for countless tourist guides.

Now, 50 years on, the group have reunited to disclose their identities and reveal how they winched an Austin Seven to the top of the university's 70ft-high Senate House.

At an anniversary dinner this month, ringleader Peter Davey revealed he had hatched the plan while staying in rooms at Gonville and Caius College overlooking the Senate House roof.
