Verbotomy: How to Play

Verbotomy is about creating words.

Every day we create a new definition and matching cartoon. Your challenge is to create a word -- a verboticism -- that matches the definition.
After you create your verboticism, you can vote for, or against, other player's words to help select the winning verboticism for the definition.

If you want more details, click on each step listed below.

1. Read the definition

Each day we publish a new definition and cartoon on the site.

2. Create a new word

After you read the definition, try to think of a new word — a verboticism — that would be a perfect fit.

The new verboticism must be all letters (a-z), all-one-word, with no spaces, dashes, numbers, or special characters.

Ideally your new verboticism will not match any existing dictionary-words (i.e., it is new and different), but this is not an absolute requirement.

The best verboticisms are pronounceable, and hint at the meaning.

3. Save your word

When you submit your verboticism, you will get an instant verbotometry. This rates your verboticism based on its spelling, match to existing dictionary-words, and uniqueness.

Your verboticism may be a unique. Or, it may match a verboticism already submitted by another player. Authors of matching verboticism will automatically be joined together as
co-creators of the word. (Each co-creator will get equal credit.)

Once you are happy with your verboticism, save it.

VERBOTOMICS:
After you save your verboticism, you can add notes to clairify the pronounciation, show sample use in a sentence, and explain its etymology —
the root words or creative inspiration. (Each creator of the verboticism can edit these notes.)

4. Vote for your favorite words

Each player gets two votes, but you cannot vote for your own word.

style="color:#FFFFFF;font-weight:bold;">Clip Source: www.livescience.com

There are various ways of shuffling off this mortal coil, but people actually die from injury (such as a fall or car accident) or disease (such as cancer). No one dies of old age. Usually when a person is said to have died "of old age," it means that he or she succumbed to one of the diseases common in our later years.

While many older people do suffer from health problems, disease does not automatically accompany aging, and seniors are living longer and healthier than ever. Just as youth does not guarantee good health, old age does not guarantee poor health.

It is true that living cells have a finite life span, but that doesn't mean that the organism simply dies because the cells are old. Instead, genetic mutations, diseases, and damaging effects of the environment can foster a specific disorder or disease. As people get older, their cells simply don't work as well, and can't stave off disease as easily or heal as well as they once could. As a result, older people may die from injuries or diseases that a younger person would easily survive. But nothing dies from simply being old.

Tags: science, biology, man, environment, medicine, life, health, death, age, body, life span

<clipSource>http://www.livescience.com/mysteries/061114_old_age.html</clipSource>

Oh, Happy Day!

clipped by: Godfrey Daniel
clipper's remarks: I'm going to try to edit this script to include other excessive punctuation. Can't figure why the author would write this and leave out question marks.

Clip Source: www.zieak.com

Eliminate extra exclamation points!!!

I’m not militant about punctuation but i do find it annoying when people write things with lots of exclamation points. So i created a Greasemonkey script that turns anywhere from 2-42 exclamation points into just one. Greasemonkey has to be installed and you need to be using Firefox in order for this to work. If you have them both already then grab my excessive exclamation points script. There is some excessive punctuation below for you to test. After you have installed the script just refresh this page and you should see the exclamation points disappear from this post’s title and the lines below.

Two exclamation points!!
Ten exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!
Five exclamation points and a number one!!!!!1
Forty Two!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can also get this script on userscripts.org here.

Tags: greasemonkey, javascript, userscripts

<clipSource>http://www.zieak.com/2007/01/17/eliminate-extra-exclamation-points/</clipSource>

If You Don’t Have the Balls to be Hated, Then You Don’t Deserve to be Loved

clipped by: kankamuso
clipper's remarks: Violent Acres, again.

Clip Source: www.violentacres.com

Back in my day, we called them ‘wannabees’ or ‘hanger ons.’ Today, you might call them something else. But those were the people who so desperately wanted to be well liked and popular, that they inadvertently crossed the line and ended up becoming one dimensional and fucking annoying. I’ve actually always had a soft spot in my heart for them. To me, it seemed like their only crime was trying too fucking hard and I couldn’t bring myself to publicly shun someone for being nice to me. Oftentimes, I’d reach out to them, hoping that my guidance would ‘cool them up’ a little. When I was 11, my classmate Megan became my full fledged project.

Megan was widely despised by everyone despite her innate sweetness. She was the type of girl who never really talked about herself. If you asked her what her favorite food was, she’d say, “What’s your favorite food?” If you answered “Pizza,” she’d say, “Oh, that’s my favorite food, too!” If you asked her what she liked to do for fun, she’d ask, “What do you like to do for fun?” If you answered, “I like playing soccer,” she’d say, “That’s exactly what I like to do too!”

I look around the world today and I’ve noticed that it is full of people like Megan.

Everyone has been playing nice-nice with each other. No one wants to accidentally offend anyone else. We’re all so open and accepting of everyone’s thoughts and feelings (Even the fucking dumb ones) and there are no stupid questions. We share. We encourage. We sugar coat. We are tactful and we are pleasant.

And after a day of this, we go home, make ourselves a cocktail and wonder why no one really knows us. We wonder why we never feel really close to our friends and we speculate on how it’s possible to live one third of our lives without bonding or connecting with anyone else. enemy by the people of America. But as it turned out, he would become for
them and for the world an unknown hero —
perhaps the greatest hero of all time. Because of military secrecy, and
political and international differences, most of the world has not heard
of this man. He is Stanislav Petrov.

The extraordinary incident leading to his heroism occurred near Moscow,
in the former Soviet Union, just past midnight, Sept. 26, 1983. Because
of time-zone differences, it was still Sept. 25 in America, a Sunday afternoon.

During the Cold War at this time, the United States and the Soviet Union
were bitter adversaries. These two world powers did not trust each other,
and this distrust led to a dangerous consequence: They built thousands of nuclear weapons to be used against
each other if a war should ever break out between them. If there ever were
such a war, these nations would very likely devastate each other and much
of the world many times over, resulting in the deaths of perhaps hundreds
    of millions of people.

It was Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov’s duty to use computers
and satellites to warn the Soviet Union if there were ever a nuclear missile
attack by the United States. In the event of such an attack, the Soviet
Union’s strategy was to launch an immediate all-out nuclear weapons
    counterattack against the United States.

Tags: hero, ussr, war

<clipSource>http://www.brightstarsound.com/world_hero/article.html</clipSource>

Image: President Bush crying at Medal of Honor ceremony.

clipped by: BitDrifter
clipper's remarks: The soldier the ceremony is honoring threw himself on a grenade to save his fellow soldiers. As soon as you click inside of the window, your mouse pointer will be locked inside of the QEMU window. To escape the pointer from the Linux desktop, press Ctrl-Alt. Cases occur every winter, but health officials say that in recent weeks they have seen two to three times as many cases as usual.

Norovirus infection usually clears up after two or three days, but medical epidemiologist Marc-Alain Widdowson, a norovirus expert at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, says the misery of those days shouldn't be dismissed.

"When you're ill, you're really ill," he says. "People (can) vomit 20 times a day."

Norovirus can be spread through contaminated food or water, causing large outbreaks. About half of food-borne diseases are thought to be caused by norovirus, the CDC says.

But this winter, it is spreading mainly from person to person through communities, and experts believe the majority of cases are unreported.

Once it's in the house, experts say, it's tough to wipe out. It can linger for days on surfaces such as children's toys, keyboards, telephones and doorknobs, and both vomit and stool are highly infectious. It is present in the stool up to three weeks after the patient recovers, so health officials stress the importance of hand-washing, especially after using the bathroom and before preparing food.

Tags: stomach, flu, stinks

<clipSource>http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2007-01-08-stomach-bug_x.htm</clipSource>

Public School Abuse In The News

clipped by: DizzyDezzi
clipper's remarks: I realize that this is somewhat of an isolated case, but I include this as one of the many reasons why I home-school my own children. I could get in-depth about why I am a home-educator, but I'll just say that if I am required to surrender my kids to faculty, like this guy, risking their physical safety, peace of mind and self-esteem, I'll pass.

But, then, I've been home-schooling for 8 years, so I am in no danger of ever, willingly, giving up my children to the care of the public school system.

Clip Source: apnews.myway.com

Ex-Coach Allegedly Hits Students in Groin

MONUMENT, Colo. (AP) - A former high school basketball coach faces 39 charges for allegedly hitting male students in the groin, showing them pornography and pouring water on his players then driving them to games in the winter with the windows rolled down.

Gregory Lynn Burr, 28, face charges ranging from sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust to child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, according to court documents reviewed by The Gazette of Colorado Springs. One of the students claims to have had scrotal surgery because of Burr's alleged assault.

A student in documents said Burr would ask them, "What is the capital of Thailand?" When they would answer "Bangkok," he would hit them in the groin.

The incidents allegedly took place from September 2005 to March 2006 at The Monument Academy.

Tags: coach, sports, abuse, public school, students, pornography

<clipSource>http://apnews.myway.com/article/20070110/D8MI6R700.html</clipSource>
