They’re “clipping” it. People are using start pages and personal organizers to filter out what they want to keep top-of-mind. Because of this, understanding the value of widgets and branded utilities is critical to success. Brands can no longer rely on people coming to their websites. They now need to think about providing modules that people can add to their personal pages whether it be iGoogle, Facebook, a blog, Pageflakes, Netvibes, etc.

<clipSource>http://www.psfk.com/2007/10/marc-schiller-talks-to-psfk.html</clipSource>

Buzzvote: Polling widgets for your blog

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy
clipper's remarks: Does anyone else know of any better free polling widgets?!

Clip Source: www.webware.com

Buzzvote is a free polling service that lets users create and share their own polls. Once made, users can share their polls through a variety of social bookmarking sites like Del.icio.us, Digg and Furl. You can also embed the poll in any Web page or blog. There are other services that do this, including BlogPoll and Pollpub, but Buzzvote has a really simple and easy-to-use interface.

Update: After actually putting this into a blog post, it's clear there's a flaw in Buzzvote's execution of embedding these polls, as they're nothing more than a giant picture link. Disappointing.

Tags: buzzvote, polls, online+polls

<clipSource>http://www.webware.com/8301-1_109-9681445-2.html?tag=blog</clipSource>

ShowYourself Widget: Social Networks Aggregator

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy
clipper's remarks: I love widgets!

Clip Source: www.newsgator.com

ShowYourself is a widget for aggregating all your social networks - Digg, Flickr, MySpace, Facebook, Virb, YouTube, Twitter, Last.fm, del.icio.us, PureVolume and more - in one place.

Tags: socialnetworking

<clipSource>http://www.newsgator.com/ngs/subscriber/WebEd2.aspx?fid=288111</clipSource>

USA Today Social Network Website

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy

Clip Source: www.micropersuasion.com

USA Today is unveiling a massive overhaul of their web site that adds a number of great features. The notable additions include: reader comments on every story, the ability to create a profile page that can be shared with others, citizen journalist photos, story tagging and digg-like recommendation buttons.

This is exactly the direction USA Today needs to follow. However, it doesn't go quite far enough. In addition to building these features, the media need to bridge their communities to the ones where we already spend our time. RSS, widgets and embedded content would help here. For example, USA Today should let us add our blog, Twitter or Facebook feeds or even embedded YouTube vids to our profile pages.

Connecting communities is so easy today with web services and it would go a long way toward making the their site - or any site for that matter - stronger. Hopefully we'll see this happen soon.

Tags: socialnetworks

<clipSource>http://www.micropersuasion.com/2007/03/usatodaycom_ref.html</clipSource>

Flikzor- Video Comments for MySpace

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy

Clip Source: mashable.com

Flikzor - Video Comments for MySpace

Now in private beta (and with early access passes available if you’re fast), comes Flikzor, a widget that allows you to accept video comments on MySpace, Friendster, Piczo, hi5, Xanga and your blog. Users create a video greeting for their friends, and visitors hit a button to record a response within the widget itself. All these responses are made public, meaning that you can browse through all the responses from that user’s friends and fans - my only wish here is that it would play all the responses in a row, rather than forcing you to click the “next” button (this isn’t intuitive).

Flikzor is neat, and so long as MySpace users aren’t too camera shy, we should see a good number of the widgets popping up. One of the most successful MySpace add-ons being tracked by Mashable Labs this year is Snapvine’s voice comments widget, which lets users accept audio comments on their MySpace profiles - Flikzor is essentially a video version, which could bode well. Services like Stickam, Flixn and Hellodeo’s MySpace video codes allow you to post webcam videos to your pages, but last time I checked, they didn’t allow conversations to occur on the widget itself (that may have changed by now). There’s also the potential, of course, for YouTube to add a “video response” button to their embedded players, but that’s not the case at the moment. All in all, Flikzor is likely to go down very well with MySpace users.

For more MySpace add-ons, see MySpace layouts and the MySpace codes category.

Tags: widgets, widgets+flikzor, widegts+myspace

<clipSource>http://mashable.com/</clipSource>

Rise of Branded Widgets in 2007

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy

Clip Source: www.whatsnextblog.com

The age of invasive advertising is over and companies will have an enormous branding experience if they provide/sponsor the information people need and want to see every day in widgets.

Essentially, widgets are a way to provide RSS feeds in a frame the user loads onto the page or site of their choice. It’s part of an ongoing strategy from Meebo to get their MeeboMe widgets in as many places as possible, and it seems like it might work: in particular, we’re seeing a lot of the IM widgets popping up on MySpace.

Meebo’s strength is that it actually has mainstream appeal - IM is the favored communication method of most teens, who seem to be flocking to these services. We’re not really sure whether the appeal is having all your IM clients in one place, or having access to IM in places where it’s normally inaccessible (eg. schools and colleges) - perhaps a bit of both.

Tags: widgets, widget+im

<clipSource>http://mashable.com/2007/01/05/meebome/</clipSource>

Marketers on MySpace

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy
clipper's remarks: $100,000 for a MySpace campaign. They’re offering two add-ons for your profile: a wedding countdown ticker and a bridal quiz to determine what type of bride you are - modern, classic or glamorous. They’ve bought banner ads on MySpace, too, which direct users to the profile page. What’s more, these are targeted to users based on the demographic data they enter on their profiles - Condé Nast say there are 9 million women aged 21-24 on the site (will all those kids entering the age “100″ see ads for cemeteries?). The campaign is costing $100,000.

In related news, the folks at Leafletter got in touch today to say they’ve launched a web app that lets you create miniature Flash websites called “leaflets” to place on MySpace, hi5, Piczo et al. These embeddable widgets consist of panes containing images and text, which can be clicked to view them close up. We think it’s mildly interesting, but lacks the mainstream appeal of a collage tool like Dundoo or the slideshows from RockYou and Slide.com.

For more MySpace add-ons, see MySpace layouts and the MySpace codes category.

Tags: socialnetworks+myspace

<clipSource>http://mashable.com/2007/01/05/myspace-countdowns/</clipSource>

PayPerPost is facing competition

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy

Clip Source: clickz.com

When PayPerPost launched this past summer, the paid blogging service stirred up a lot of blogger vitriol. The jabs keep on coming, but that hasn't stopped the self-proclaimed "rockstartup" from scoring VC bucks, winning over thousands of bloggers and spurring a pack of competitors to join the space. From the soon-to-drop LoudLaunch.com to the just-out ReviewMe to South Korea's beta-phase outfit CREAMaid, a burgeoning pay-to-blog niche is in the offing.

Today PayPerPost will offer a glimpse into its frolicsome world through a new online reality video series called "Rockstartup," available for free on Apple's iTunes and, of course, YouTube. Viewers of upcoming episodes can expect footage of the staff's romp through New York's recent ad:tech conference and perhaps a shot or two of "The Blue Monster," the oversized truck PayPerPost parks at NASCAR events and on college campuses to attract members.

Up-and-coming paid blogging service CREAMaid was also spawned with community and social networking in mind. The system, currently under construction in South Korea, is designed to unite bloggers who post about the same subjects through "conversation widgets." Advertisers first create a widget, and offer to pay bloggers to write about a suggested topic. A blogger participates by plugging the widget into an advertiser-inspired blog post. If the advertiser selects the blog post, it automatically feeds through to the widgets featured across the spectrum of participating blogs. The CREAM in the company name stands for Customer Relationship Extension and Management.

Tags: payperpost, creamaid, loudlaunch, online+advertising

<clipSource>http://clickz.com/showPage.html?page=3624104</clipSource>

Making the Social Media Press Release easy to use

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy
clipper's remarks: Shannon Whitley is doing a great job moving the Social Media Press Release forward with his easy PRXBuilder. Widgets will be prominently featured in the two big operating systems due out this year. In spring 2007, Apple will release the newest version of its Mac OS X operating system, codenamed “Leopard,” which will let users build widgets from scratch and share them with others, even if they’ve never written a line of code. Vista, Microsoft Windows’s new operating system, will come with 11 “gadgets” out of the box and also offer users the ability to build more and upload them to Windows Live. “I think we’ll be seeing thousands and thousands of these mini-programs,” says Gabe Dorfman, a Microsoft product manager. “They are pretty cheap to develop, don’t require advanced coding skills and are super-easy to use for the end-user as well.”

This, of course, is music to advertisers’ ears. Target has a gadget that counts down to Christmas; Wrigley’s sponsors a Winamp media player that looks like a pack of gum; UPS has a package-tracking widget. Purina put its name on a weather widget—to let users know if it’s nice enough outside to take Spot out for walkies—that was downloaded more than 15,000 times in its first two months. This may seem like a paltry audience for two months of advertising. But consider the fact that the Purina logo now sits on every one of those 15,000 desktops, smack in the users’ line of sight. “It’s better than advertising,” says Om Malik. “It’s in front of your eyes constantly; that brand becomes your brand.” Your widgets certainly don’t need to come branded, however. Indeed, that’s the whole point: to help the World Wide Web become your Web.

Tags: widgets, widgitization

<clipSource>http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16329739/site/newsweek/page/2/</clipSource>

Widgets Defined

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy

Clip Source: www.msnbc.msn.com

If you sit in front of a computer at work, chances are there are certain Web sites that you monitor throughout the day, every day—to check e-mail, weather, stock portfolios or sports stats. But, thanks to widgets, taking multiple steps to track down headlines in one place and then check your e-mail in another may seem woefully outdated this time next year. These mini-applications—also called “gadgets”—are simple bits of code, easily dragged onto a desktop or pasted into a personal page, where they are constantly updated with whatever information you want. “It’s the exact opposite of what the Web used to be,” explains Om Malik, a tech journalist and founding editor of gigaom.com. Last month Malik and Niall Kennedy, another tech blogger, organized and hosted Widgets Live—an entire sold-out conference devoted to the topic (in, where else?, San Francisco). “Widgets,” he says, “bring the Web to you.” Think of it as tech jewelry—bling for your blog; ice for your desktop.

If 2006 was all about social networks, user-generated content and YouTube, then it’s a fair bet that 2007 will be about further personalizing life online. Already, portals like Google and Yahoo! offer customizable pages. Want to see a calendar, learn a new word-of-the-day and check local windsurfing conditions all from your homepage? No problem, you have thousands of widgets to choose from. And the fact that they’re so intuitive has made the features very popular. “The Google personal homepage is the fastest-growing Google product,” says Marissa Mayer, the company’s vice president of “search products and user experience.” “This market is going to be very large.”

Tags: widgets, widgetization

<clipSource>http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16329739/site/newsweek/</clipSource>

del.icio.us launch Tagometer widget

clipped by: ghiberti

Clip Source: mashable.com

Posting social bookmarking links on blog posts and news stories has become the norm these days - the New York Times even announced this month that they’re adding del.icio.us, Digg and Facebook Share buttons to their articles. In fact, Yahoo even employs people to make sure that top publications have branded del.icio.us links on their article pages (we know because they contacted Mashable in the past).

So it’s no surprise that del.icio.us is launching a new website widget today, taking blogger self-promotion to a whole new level. “Tagometer”, as it’s being called, provides a button for readers to bookmark a website, tags for that website and a tally of the number of people who have bookmarked the site. The badge is created using javascript, so it won’t work on social networks like MySpace. It seems the Tagometer widget is mainly designed for use in your blog sidebar - this allows readers to easily bookmark your site, and for newcomers to see how popular your blog is. That said, you can also use it on individual posts. One slight issue is that the widget automatically detects the page it’s on - if you’re viewing this on the Mashable homepage, it’ll bookmark Mashable. If you’re on the individual post page, meanwhile, it’ll bookmark the post itself.

If you’re a Feedburner user, also note that Feedburner has released a new FeedFlare unit today that incorporates this detailed data.
