It’s pretty clear in this iteration that iSporty will cater mainly to the UK market, and global users might feel a little lost among the hordes of soccer fans.

You need to be logged in to see the full extent of the new features, which include the site’s TV web channel iSporty TV, regularly updated sporting news, blogging, fansites, scrapbooks and photo sharing. There’s also the ability to keep a calendar and post events. Groups, meanwhile, are populated with photos from Flickr and videos from YouTube and Google Video - there’s Google Maps integration, too. The interface is an acquired taste: the brown, red, gray and blue takes a little getting used to, and I think the old design was less stale.

I partially understand the benefits of narrowing your scope to one country (no competition), but I also think it’s less ambitious than taking on the world: wouldn’t you rather follow the MySpace and Netvibes strategy of launching a global/US site first before rolling out national versions?

Other sports social networks include Takkle, FanNation and Ultrafan.

Tags: socialnetworking

<clipSource>http://mashable.com/2007/02/21/isporty/</clipSource>

Webkinz: Stuffed Animals Second Life

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy

Clip Source: www.washingtonpost.com

They are called Webkinz, huggable, plush toys with elaborate virtual lives that spotlight how children's play is changing, moving effortlessly between the real world and the Web. And in less than two years, they have become must-have items for tech-savvy 'tweeners.

Webkinz combines classic stuffed animals with popular online trends, such as social networking and instant messaging. Other toys and Web sites have made similar efforts. Remember the late-1990s craze of Tamagotchi, billed as the world's first digital pet? More recently, Neopets.com began manufacturing such plush toys as the "cybunny," which mirrored the virtual animals on its site. But Webkinz claims to be the first to marry the physical and the virtual from its inception.

Each stuffed animal comes with an identification number that gives children access to the Webkinz site ( http://www.webkinz.com/). There, owners discover their pets' online personas ("I'll let you in on a secret," reads the profile of a cocker spaniel. "I love fish sticks, and I've always wanted a bunny clown.") Children can buy clothes for their pets using virtual money, outfitting them in baggy jeans or pink tutus. They can also decorate their pets' virtual rooms with such items as a stove, a boy-band poster or a bed shaped like a pirate ship.

Tags: socialnetworking, virtualworlds

<clipSource>http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/06/AR2007020601910.html?nav=rss_business</clipSource>

55% of Teens use Social Networking Sites

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy

Clip Source: overtonecomm.blogspot.com

It was quite interesting and reminded me a little of Second Life with its avatars and social networking. So, a few days ago when the Pew Internet Research released its newest study about teens showing that more than half (55 percent) of all online American’s aged 12 to 17 use online social networking sites (pdf of report memo).

This means that half of all American teens can be considered content creators. A vast majority of teens (91 percent) use these sites as a way to keep in touch with real-life friends and with friends they rarely see in person (82 percent).

So, what happens when these content creators and social networkers enter the workforce in a few years?

Tags: socialnetworking+teens, socialnetworking

<clipSource>http://overtonecomm.blogspot.com/2007/01/half-of-all-american-teens-are-content_12.html</clipSource>

Toyota Launches Social Network for Hybrid Owners

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy
clipper's remarks: Smart move for Toyota

Clip Source: clickz.com

Toyota has relaunched its Web site at Toyota.com/hybrids to allow hybrid owners to post videos, share photos and meet other owners.
Posting social bookmarking links on blog posts and news stories has become the norm these days - the New York Times even announced this month that they’re adding del.icio.us, Digg and Facebook Share buttons to their articles. In fact, Yahoo even employs people to make sure that top publications have branded del.icio.us links on their article pages (we know because they contacted Mashable in the past).

So it’s no surprise that del.icio.us is launching a new website widget today, taking blogger self-promotion to a whole new level. “Tagometer”, as it’s being called, provides a button for readers to bookmark a website, tags for that website and a tally of the number of people who have bookmarked the site. The badge is created using javascript, so it won’t work on social networks like MySpace. It seems the Tagometer widget is mainly designed for use in your blog sidebar - this allows readers to easily bookmark your site, and for newcomers to see how popular your blog is. That said, you can also use it on individual posts. One slight issue is that the widget automatically detects the page it’s on - if you’re viewing this on the Mashable homepage, it’ll bookmark Mashable. If you’re on the individual post page, meanwhile, it’ll bookmark the post itself.

If you’re a Feedburner user, also note that Feedburner has released a new FeedFlare unit today that incorporates this detailed data.
