However, we think what we are announcing — the Open Handset Alliance and Android — is more significant and ambitious than a single phone. In fact, through the joint efforts of the members of the Open Handset Alliance, we hope Android will be the foundation for many new phones and will create an entirely new mobile experience for users, with new applications and new capabilities we can’t imagine today

Android is the first truly open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices. It includes an operating system, user-interface and applications — all of the software to run a mobile phone, but without the proprietary obstacles that have hindered mobile innovation.

Tags: gphone, google

<clipSource>http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/11/05/breaking-google-announces-android-and-open-handset-alliance/</clipSource>

Firefox coming to iPhone

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy

Clip Source: www.techcrunch.com

The iPhone, with its fully-functioning Safari browser, showed us that mobile browsing need not be a compromise. SimulScribe offers a simpler way to handle pesky voicemail.

SimulScribe converts your voicemail into text messages
and then sends them directly to your mobile phone,
Blackberry, Goodlink enabled phone and/or your email
 account.

You can instantly see who has called and what they
said, whether you are sitting in a business meeting
or traveling on the road. Your voicemail functionality
does not change; it can still be listened to and stored
 for later use.

This year, Flickr added geotagging with a drag-n-drop8 interface with Yahoo maps. A day after the service went live, Flickr said 1.2 million photos had been geotagged9 — check out the more recent map of Flickr’s geotagged photos here10. Next year, we’re thinking more mainstream photo-sharing services will better leverage location data and geotagging maps.

Nokia, always ready to oblige, hooked up with Flickr12 and announced devices like the N9513 that will make geotagging and uploading to Flickr easier. Yahoo also has a research division14 working on a mobile application called Zonetag15, which makes it easier to tag and upload photos from a wider array of camera phones. Next year we expect to start seeing people actually using these and other mobile services and devices to geotag content, given few people are actually using them now.

Tags: social+maps

<clipSource>http://gigaom.com/2006/12/27/geotagging-2006/#comment-481333</clipSource>

Personalize your voicemail for each caller

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy
clipper's remarks: Somebody read my mind, creative personalized messages here I come!

Clip Source: youmail.com

Individualize Your Voice Greetings

YouMail is the new voice mail for cell phones. Among many features, it allows you to record unique voice greetings for anyone who calls you, based on their caller ID. Individualize your voice greetings for friends, family or important callers while maintaining a standard greeting for work and unknown callers.

Check your voice messages from any phone or via the web and forward favorite messages to anyone via email. Have fun with the already infamous DITCHMAIL feature that hangs up on unwanted callers after your custom greeting for them is played.

YouMail works with your existing phone and carrier and is easy to trial without risk. YouMail is free for users who sign up now while there are still beta accounts available and easy to change back and forth between your current voice mail and YouMail.
