The iPhone, with its fully-functioning Safari browser, showed us that mobile browsing need not be a compromise. Now, the folks at Mozilla are working on a mobile version of Firefox.

The price of an 8GB iPhone just got lower, and the 4GB iPhone is on its way out, according to Apple CEO Steve Jobs. He announced the 8GB iPhone's new price will be $399, down $200 from its original $599 price. Well now, how does that make those of us early adopters who dropped $600 on the first ones feel? Hm.

Engadget Screwed Up

Engadget gets an email saying the iPhone will be delayed until October and that Leopard will also be delayed.

- Engadget writes about it saying it came from a “trustworthy source.”

- Apple’s stock drops $4.47 per share in eight minutes ($4 billion off the market cap).

- Oops. The email was fake.

Engadget says “Presumably Apple is now on the hunt for whomever was able to spoof its internal email system.”

Engadget Screwed Up
In my opinion, this was bad journalism by Engadget (Ryan Block) and not a good thing for blogs. It would have taken them a few minutes to call and let Apple know what they were sitting on and that they were planning on running it. Apple could have at least had a second to say “this was a fake.” I think Engadget may have hurt its relationship with Apple here.

My guess is Engadget realized they weren’t the only ones who received the email, and they wanted to put it out as fast as possible. So, about that “we have it on authority” part . . .

Apple being sued over iPhone

I couldn’t find an excuse to write about Apple’s gorgeous new iPhone, but when it comes to lawsuits, we can make an exception. Apple is now being sued by Cisco Systems over the iPhone name, claiming that the new product violates their iPhone trademark. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California today.

The iPhone trademark was originally filed on March 20th, 1996, by InfoGear Technology - Cisco then acquired InfoGear in 2000 and have owned the trademark ever since. According to Cisco, the company “entered into negotiations with Apple in good faith after Apple repeatedly asked permission to use Cisco’s iPhone name”. They even made use of the trademark three weeks ago, releasing a VoIP phone of the same name.

Negotiations over use of the trademark have been going on for years, Cisco say, but Apple’s lawyers haven’t signed and returned the final contract. In fact, the lawsuit isn’t exactly unexpected: there were lots of questions being asked yesterday when the iPhone name was unveiled.

Apple is also being sued over the alleged iPod-iTunes monopoly, and is currently facing a backdated stock options scandal.
