I, along with Shel Holtz, thought of him as a sort of grocery store hero with his Whole Foods Blog. Maintaining a respectable blog, while posting bogus comments on Yahoo Finance message boards like "13 years from now Whole Foods will be a $800+ stock before splits," "while I'm not a 'Mackey groupie, I do admire what the man has accomplished" and my personal favorite "I like Mackey's haircut. I think he looks cute!"

Confusing me even more is his response to his actions. He tries to play it off like what he did wasn't a big deal. It is a big deal, especially when, at the same time, you are publishing a "credible" blog to build truthful and authentic relationships with your current and potential customers, influencers and even investors!! I hope he faces serious repercussions for his actions... serves him right for acting so two-faced.

Clip Source: blog.holtz.com

John Mackey, the CEO of Whole Foods

has blogged regularly on the Whole Foods website

It is therefore saddening to see the fallout from the revelation that Mackey has routinely engaged in discussions on financial message boards about his company—touting Whole Foods as an investment—using a pseudonym. He posted items under the name harobed, an anogram for Deborah, his wife’s name. It was the FTC that exposed Mackey’s involvement.

Mackey didn’t lie in any of his posts, leading some to believe that he didn’t violate any laws, even if he did violate ethical standards.

There is nothing on Mackey’s blog about all of this, which is sad.

He should have posted something contrite, apologizing for his overzealousness.

Rather than adhere to a plan for blogging and participating in social media, Mackey just did whatever felt right. This is why I have never told a client, “You should be blogging,” but rather recommend blogging when, as a tactic, it can serve to meet business objectives.

Tags: johnmackey, wholefoods, blogging, ftc, wildoats, ethics

<clipSource>http://blog.holtz.com/index.php/weblog/whole_foods_mackey_makes_one_misstep_after_another/</clipSource>

Web 2.0 Defined

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy

Clip Source: mynewtechnology.blogspot.com

Such technologies include RSS, Wikis, blogs and blogging, streaming media audio and video formats, podcasting, instant messaging, social bookmarking, photos, commentary and comments formats, tagging, web services, and social networking. If the site looks at all familiar, that’s because it’s really a relaunch of TiredandTested, which we wrote about at the end of last year. It’s pretty clear in this iteration that iSporty will cater mainly to the UK market, and global users might feel a little lost among the hordes of soccer fans.

You need to be logged in to see the full extent of the new features, which include the site’s TV web channel iSporty TV, regularly updated sporting news, blogging, fansites, scrapbooks and photo sharing. There’s also the ability to keep a calendar and post events. Groups, meanwhile, are populated with photos from Flickr and videos from YouTube and Google Video - there’s Google Maps integration, too. The interface is an acquired taste: the brown, red, gray and blue takes a little getting used to, and I think the old design was less stale.

I partially understand the benefits of narrowing your scope to one country (no competition), but I also think it’s less ambitious than taking on the world: wouldn’t you rather follow the MySpace and Netvibes strategy of launching a global/US site first before rolling out national versions?

Other sports social networks include Takkle, FanNation and Ultrafan.

Tags: socialnetworking

<clipSource>http://mashable.com/2007/02/21/isporty/</clipSource>

PR doesnt get Social Media

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy
clipper's remarks: I agree I struggle with the same thing at work

Clip Source: www.stoweboyd.com

I attended the Third Thursday event last night, which was held in SF instead of the usual Palo Alto. About 25 people attended, mostly young, impressionable PR and communications folks eager to learn all about social media: specifically, social media press releases, which were the topic for the evening. But what they heard was -- by my lights -- a seriously watered down version of what social media is, or should be, as the backdrop for a discussion about new media press releases.

To the participants: Please, please, please don't talk about audiences when you are theoretically promoting social media. As Jay Rosen has suggested, we are the people formerly known as the audience. Blogging is not just another channel for corporate marketing types to push their messages to markets, eyballs, or audiences. Social media is based on the dynamic of a many-to-many dialogue between people. Yes, people: that's the word that should have been used. Not audience. If you'd like to make a distinction between a company and those outside the company, just remember: they are not an audience for your messages, any more than you are an audience for theirs. The whole point is that the people formerly known at the audience -- the edglings, as I call us -- are participating in the blogosphere, and if individuals within companies want to, they can participate: as individuals. Companies don't blog, or converse: people do.

Finally, as Doc Searls has pointed out, metaphors matter. Drop the old speak: no more "audience", no more third-party writing, no more "wink, wink" complicity in totally false quotes and knowingly working with clients on spin instead of open dialogue. School your clients to do the right thing, not just wrap themselves in a bunch of psychobabble about social interaction with their "communities" without actually adopting a new mindset.

Tags: socialmedia, pr_socialmedia, pr

<clipSource>http://www.stoweboyd.com/message/2007/01/enough_already_.html</clipSource>

Whateverlife: Helps you with MySpace code

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy

Clip Source: mashable.com

The sixth player is a 70s-styled directory and guide that seems to be built on a blogging platform. Instead of producing MySpace layouts and banners, WhateverLife provides advice and help on installing your layouts, producing overlapping text, creating tables and more. In many ways, it’s an html coding guide reinvented for the MySpace generation. This is a whole ‘nother market to tap: the huge number of MySpace users who are struggling with html coding.

Tags: myspace, myspace+ad-ons+whateverlife

<clipSource>http://mashable.com/2006/07/28/myspace-layouts-now-9th-biggest-search-term/</clipSource>

Potentially Powerful Blogging Platform Terapad

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy

Clip Source: www.stuartbruce.biz

My initial impressions were favourable as Terapad looked powerful, feature-rich and easy to use. My two concerns at the time were cost and security. It was expensive compared to the competition (although none of them offered as much). Secondly, I would have concerns about hosting a commercial site on a proprietary system from a small company - you always have to consider the worst.

However, an email from Terapad founder Stephen Tual informs me that Terapad is now free (supported by AdSense adverts). This changes the entire dynamics for me and I think potentially makes Terapad an ideal platform for community and activist type groups such as local politicians, resident associations, local charities, pressure groups etc.

I'll try to make some time to have a proper play with it and report back when I've done so - or you can follow the action here.

Tags: blog+platform+terapad

<clipSource>http://www.stuartbruce.biz/2007/01/blogweb_content.html</clipSource>

Pitching Bloggers

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy

Clip Source: www.stuartbruce.biz

Journalists are PR schmucks, bloggers cut the hype

As if. The company started with major blogs such as Boing Boing, Engadget, and Gizmodo; news of Firebox then circulated among smaller blogs that linked to the larger ones.

“Not every one of our clients can get away with that, but when you have product lines like gizmos and toys, you can feed the blogs and generate sales,” Linn says. “We found that blogs don’t respond well if your message is too corporate, so we cut that out and got to what’s important to the reader.”

Tags: blog, journalism, blogging

<clipSource>http://www.stuartbruce.biz/2007/01/journalists_are.html</clipSource>

Cool blogging platform Terapad.com

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy
clipper's remarks: I don't know much about competing platforms but this one seems super customizable!

Clip Source: www.terapad.com

AdAge reports that the ill-defined phrase that tries to sum up the essence of the user-controlled web was the most-cited Wikipedia entry of 2006, presumably because no-one really knows what the heck it means.

The other entries in the the top ten were Steve Irwin, the Mark Foley scandal, blog, AJAX, Snakes on a Plane, meme, wiki and RSS. The fact that so many of those phrases are technical suggests that tech bloggers account for a lot of the citations. A better measure of popularity is the number of views - those stats show that sex-related entries are the most popular (the site that lists these stats is currently down).

Also released at the end of 2006 were Neilsen’s stats on the most linked-to blog entries of the year. In that case, a petition against changes to the LiveJournal interface made the top spot, while political blogs made many of the other top entries. Unsurprisingly, Technorati’s “State of the Blogosphere” reports also make numerous appearances. So bloggers are interested in blog entries about blogging: who would have thought?

l

Tags: web2.0, wikipedia

<clipSource>http://mashable.com/page/2/</clipSource>
