I think that although Technorati's overall blog ranking system has its flaws, the Techmeme Leaderboard will be a great addition but still does not try to put the greater blogosphere in order.

The top sites are important and they should be recognized and ranked appropriately. But what about the rest of us millions of bloggers who fall somewhere towards the top or somewhere in the middle? Technorati is still the central place that puts the blogosphere in perspective. Even if it's a somewhat flawed perspective.

Clip Source: www.techcrunch.com

Technorati still has one stronghold left - it controls the definitive, editorially unbiased list of top blogs. The list is based on unique incoming blog links over the previous six months. More links = a higher position on the list. To get a top 100 spot, a blog currently needs about 3,700 unique links.

But links from other blogs may no longer be the best indicator of the popularity of a blog, particularly today when blog links can be obtained by simply opening up the checkbook and paying. Also, Technorati clearly counts spam and other blogs, which can have a significant impact on rankings.

Techmeme Leaderboard.

The list will be created based on the blogs that created the most headlines on Techmeme over the previous thirty days (so it will change frequently).

a much better way of ranking the very top blogs than the Technorati approach. Technorati has deep flaws, for reasons stated above. Techmeme, by contrast, has zero spam and tends to mirror what the tech blogosphere is writing

Tags: techorati, techmeme

<clipSource>http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/09/30/techmeme-leaderboard-to-launch-attacking-technoratis-last-stronghold/</clipSource>

Reveal your true self, and embedd it in your blog

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy
clipper's remarks: All online content is becoming embed-able. Smart on the part of companies online to offer this option. Why would I do anything; take an online test, participate in an online community or spend the time to create online content on any site if I can represent it on my blog? Forget "email this." Now its "blog this," "facebook this," and "embed this." No more sharing behind closed doors(i.e. email), we all want to receive credit and the feeling of connectivity from all of the time and energy we put into our online activity.

Clip Source: www.personaldna.com

I find the ProBlogger creator, Darren Rowse, to be very intriguing and he does a great job at aggregating everyone's thoughts and experiences on how to blog more strategically. Thanks Bryan, Darren and ProBlogger contributors I am finding the ProBlogger blog to be not only helpful but also inspiring.

This is a post-to-blog clip for: clipping the social web, http://www.clipper.typepad.com

Clip Source: onemansgoal.com

31 Days to Building a Better Blog

Day 1 - Email a New Reader
I, along with Shel Holtz, thought of him as a sort of grocery store hero with his Whole Foods Blog. Maintaining a respectable blog, while posting bogus comments on Yahoo Finance message boards like "13 years from now Whole Foods will be a $800+ stock before splits," "while I'm not a 'Mackey groupie, I do admire what the man has accomplished" and my personal favorite "I like Mackey's haircut. I think he looks cute!"

Confusing me even more is his response to his actions. He tries to play it off like what he did wasn't a big deal. It is a big deal, especially when, at the same time, you are publishing a "credible" blog to build truthful and authentic relationships with your current and potential customers, influencers and even investors!! I hope he faces serious repercussions for his actions... serves him right for acting so two-faced.

Clip Source: blog.holtz.com

John Mackey, the CEO of Whole Foods

has blogged regularly on the Whole Foods website

It is therefore saddening to see the fallout from the revelation that Mackey has routinely engaged in discussions on financial message boards about his company—touting Whole Foods as an investment—using a pseudonym. He posted items under the name harobed, an anogram for Deborah, his wife’s name. It was the FTC that exposed Mackey’s involvement.

Mackey didn’t lie in any of his posts, leading some to believe that he didn’t violate any laws, even if he did violate ethical standards.

There is nothing on Mackey’s blog about all of this, which is sad.

He should have posted something contrite, apologizing for his overzealousness.

Rather than adhere to a plan for blogging and participating in social media, Mackey just did whatever felt right. This is why I have never told a client, “You should be blogging,” but rather recommend blogging when, as a tactic, it can serve to meet business objectives.

Tags: johnmackey, wholefoods, blogging, ftc, wildoats, ethics

<clipSource>http://blog.holtz.com/index.php/weblog/whole_foods_mackey_makes_one_misstep_after_another/</clipSource>

Buzzvote: Polling widgets for your blog

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy
clipper's remarks: Does anyone else know of any better free polling widgets?!

Clip Source: www.webware.com

Buzzvote is a free polling service that lets users create and share their own polls. Once made, users can share their polls through a variety of social bookmarking sites like Del.icio.us, Digg and Furl. You can also embed the poll in any Web page or blog. There are other services that do this, including BlogPoll and Pollpub, but Buzzvote has a really simple and easy-to-use interface.

Update: After actually putting this into a blog post, it's clear there's a flaw in Buzzvote's execution of embedding these polls, as they're nothing more than a giant picture link. Disappointing.

Tags: buzzvote, polls, online+polls

<clipSource>http://www.webware.com/8301-1_109-9681445-2.html?tag=blog</clipSource>

Mashable + Megite = Mashtracker

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy
clipper's remarks: Mashable and news tracker site Megite have partnered to launch Mashtracker, a "memetracker" that focuses on blog conversations stemming from stories published by Mashable.

Clip Source: mashtracker.mashable.com

Mashable! - The Social Networking Blog

Mashable! - The Social Networking Blog

Tags: mashtracker

<clipSource>http://mashtracker.mashable.com/</clipSource>

Top Reason People Unsubscribe to Blog Feeds

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy

Clip Source: www.problogger.net

Too many posts (the post levels are too overwhelming) - 37

Well, with radio stations, there are big well-known web sites with huge audiences, and there are small college stations. On the web, there are A-list blogs and web sites that have thousands or entries every time they give away prizes as part of a contest. And then there are small blogs trying to build traffic for their sites. The other day I entered "contest" into Google Blog Search, and thousands of results popped up. And most of them were for legitimate contests being held by blogs. They were giving away everything from iPod Shuffles to concert tickets to a Nintendo DS.

Tags: blog, blog+contests

<clipSource>http://www.downloadsquad.com/2007/03/01/get-free-stuff-using-google-blog-search/</clipSource>

New York Times creating blogs

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy

Clip Source: publications.mediapost.com

MANY OF THE LARGEST ONLINE newspapers, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post, have beefed up efforts to create blogs.
Consider, the Times alone now boasts Screens, a blog devoted to online video; Carpetbagger, about the Oscar awards; and The Lede, dedicated to further exploring major news stories, among other relatively new blogs.

It seems intuitive that readers are visiting such blogs; after all, why else would papers continue to support them?

Now, however, there's some objective support showing that online newspaper readers have taken to the publications' blogs. Data released this morning by media measurement company Nielsen//NetRatings shows that blog pages within the top 10 online newspapers drew around 3.8 million unique visitors last month--more than triple December 2005's 1.2 million.

By contrast, total online readership at the top 10 newspapers during that time has only grown by 9%, from 27.3 million in December 2005 to 29.9 million last month.

These numbers also mean that the proportion of online newspaper readers that also visit the paper's blog has grown from around 4% at the end of 2005 to around 12% last month.

Nielsen//NetRatings also reported that newspapers' blog readers tend to skew male--even more so than online newspapers in general. Men accounted for 66% of visitors to blogs, and 60% of visitors to online newspapers last month.

With this, you can start your own free advertising campaign by promoting in these related blogs. One of the easiest (and of course cheapest) way to achieve this is to leave a comment in the latest post. By leaving a comment, not only will the owner take notice of your blog but most importantly the visitors. Most visitors (me included) like to read comments very much and makes the so-called "comment advertising" so powerful.

1. Never leave short, useless or canned comments

2. Never be rude or too "hard-sell".

3. Visit the blogs you have left comments on frequently and keep an eye on any replies to your post.

4. Leave comments again when you have written a new post or changed the layout.

Tags: blog+directory, blogannounce, seo+tips, seo

<clipSource>http://blogannounce.info/seo-tips.php</clipSource>

Google vs. Technorati

clipped by: juliapatriciaroy
clipper's remarks: I like to use both of them, some of the blogs/posts that Technorati misses gets picked up by Google.

Clip Source: weblogs.hitwise.com

When Google Blog Search launched last year, I wondered if it would surpass Technorati in market share of visits. This week Hitwise data show that the market share of visits to Google Blog Search surpassed visits to Technorati for the week ending 12/23/06. Google Blog Search began catching up to Technorati in October, when Google placed a link to Blog Search on the Google News home page, causing a 168% surge in market share for Google Blog Search over a two week period (week ending 10/14/06 vs. week ending 10/28/06). Since then, approximately 60% of Google Blog Search's traffic has been coming directly from Google News, compared to less than 1% before the change. Blogger Blog Search has been receiving about the same amount of traffic as Technorati, although it has dropped since Google Blog Search took off. Sphere, another blog search service, is still small, but growing.

Tags: google, blog search engine, search engine, technorati

<clipSource>http://weblogs.hitwise.com/leeann-prescott/2006/12/google_blog_search_surpasses_t.html</clipSource>

del.icio.us launch Tagometer widget

clipped by: ghiberti

Clip Source: mashable.com

Posting social bookmarking links on blog posts and news stories has become the norm these days - the New York Times even announced this month that they’re adding del.icio.us, Digg and Facebook Share buttons to their articles. In fact, Yahoo even employs people to make sure that top publications have branded del.icio.us links on their article pages (we know because they contacted Mashable in the past).

So it’s no surprise that del.icio.us is launching a new website widget today, taking blogger self-promotion to a whole new level. “Tagometer”, as it’s being called, provides a button for readers to bookmark a website, tags for that website and a tally of the number of people who have bookmarked the site. The badge is created using javascript, so it won’t work on social networks like MySpace. It seems the Tagometer widget is mainly designed for use in your blog sidebar - this allows readers to easily bookmark your site, and for newcomers to see how popular your blog is. That said, you can also use it on individual posts. One slight issue is that the widget automatically detects the page it’s on - if you’re viewing this on the Mashable homepage, it’ll bookmark Mashable. If you’re on the individual post page, meanwhile, it’ll bookmark the post itself.

If you’re a Feedburner user, also note that Feedburner has released a new FeedFlare unit today that incorporates this detailed data.
