The product placement that will underwrite the site is the bit that scares me (and I don't have kids yet, though I do worry about my nieces). Kids are interacting with brands at such a young age these days, I just hope it doesn't turn them all into shopaholics.

Clip Source: online.wsj.com

The new Disney.com, which Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger plans to unveil at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next Monday, is Disney's take on social networking for mainstream America. In it, kids can chat while watching video clips, listening to music and playing a game, all at the same time. Parents, meanwhile, can control their kids' use of the site.

Of course, a closed universe has advantages beyond parental control. Mr. Yanover says there are many more advertising opportunities on the new site, including display ads, video ads and sponsorships. Disney will also charge for subscriptions to more advanced games and also plans to offer things like special powers in a game for a one-off charge. And it will sell DVDs, merchandise, travel packages and tickets to its parks directly to the public.

Tags: disney, myspace, social networking, web, internet, advertising, kids, children

<clipSource>http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB116768252073363978-RN4sDLPolvG8T_t6JjByVIdKicQ_20070109.html</clipSource>

Social media in the classroom

clipped by: enbar
clipper's remarks: I'm not sure if this is just cheerleading for web 2.0, but some of the ideas look promising. The Promise of Social Networks

Derek E Baird

One of the main pitfalls of introducing new technology into the classroom (online or otherwise) is the risk of having the technology frustrate the user to the point that it distracts them from their original learning goal. Flickr is important because its ease-of-use allows the student to keep his/her focus on acquiring new skills, building on existing knowledge while at the same time developing writing, software, and strengthening social ties within their learning circle.

While not originally developed as an education tool, Flickr, and other social networking technologies have the ability to play an important part in student motivation, retention and learning—especially in distributed learning environments. Social networking technologies and media are important tools because of their ability to foster interaction and communication between students. This is especially important in online learning communities, where students may have limited face-to-face time to build a support network with their peers.

Summary

Today’s students have grown up surrounded by the digital world, and as a result they have developed new ways of understanding, learning and processing information. As new types of social media are developed, teachers will need to find new and innovative ways to harness the power of these technologies to enhance their curriculum, and support differing learning styles. Flickr holds great potential as part of a multi-faceted approach that blends learning theory and social technologies in the curriculum.

To be sure, Flickr and other social media can’t, and shouldn’t, replace face-to-face communication between teachers and students; rather it should be used as one of many digital building blocks that, when skillfully integrated into the curriculum has the potential to open lines of dialogue, communication, and learning.

Tags: flickr, del.icio.us, social, 2.0, education, pedagogy, internet

<clipSource>http://www.techlearning.com/story/showArticle.php?articleID=172302903</clipSource>

Many networks - 1 person

clipped by: ghiberti
clipper's remarks: Alas, they're not aware of cm

Clip Source: www.profilelinker.com

ProfileLinker is an innovative web utility that allows you to

Posting social bookmarking links on blog posts and news stories has become the norm these days - the New York Times even announced this month that they’re adding del.icio.us, Digg and Facebook Share buttons to their articles. In fact, Yahoo even employs people to make sure that top publications have branded del.icio.us links on their article pages (we know because they contacted Mashable in the past).

So it’s no surprise that del.icio.us is launching a new website widget today, taking blogger self-promotion to a whole new level. “Tagometer”, as it’s being called, provides a button for readers to bookmark a website, tags for that website and a tally of the number of people who have bookmarked the site. The badge is created using javascript, so it won’t work on social networks like MySpace. It seems the Tagometer widget is mainly designed for use in your blog sidebar - this allows readers to easily bookmark your site, and for newcomers to see how popular your blog is. That said, you can also use it on individual posts. One slight issue is that the widget automatically detects the page it’s on - if you’re viewing this on the Mashable homepage, it’ll bookmark Mashable. If you’re on the individual post page, meanwhile, it’ll bookmark the post itself.

If you’re a Feedburner user, also note that Feedburner has released a new FeedFlare unit today that incorporates this detailed data.
