Consumption Facts
Each year, an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide. That comes out to over one million per minute. Billions end up as litter each year.
According to the EPA, over 380 billion plastic bags, sacks and wraps are consumed in the U.S. each year.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the U.S. goes through 100 billion plastic shopping bags annually. (Estimated cost to retailers is $4 billion)
According to the industry publication Modern Plastics, Taiwan consumes 20 billion bags a year—900 per person.
According to Australia’s Department of Environment, Australians consume 6.9 billion plastic bags each year—326 per person.

An estimated .7% or 49,600,000 end up as litter each year.

I discovered and started using Clipmarks in January and have been nothing but impressed with the community and its developers ever since. For those of you who don't know what Clipmarks is, I am going to try my best to explain this very dynamic application and community. It is best, I think, described as a social news and networking site that allows you to save or "clip" pieces of web pages, whether it be text, photo or video, and comment on them using the Clipmarks browser application and then share your clips and comments with the entire Clipmarks community.

Apart from the usefulness of the application, what has kept me such an avid user and supporter of Clipmarks-- are the developers. Eric Skiff, Adam Collett and Eric Goldstein have interacted and actively "popped" my clips almost daily since I signed up in January.

They make EVERYONE feel like they are part of the community and for that I have become a Clipmarks evangelist.

My hats off to you Clipmarks crew

Apple's iTunes software only lets you put the music onto the player, and not the other way around.

The iPod/iTunes combo was designed with this restriction built in to prevent piracy and illicit trading.

However, there are a number of legitimate reasons you might need to transfer songs from your iPod to your hard drive. For instance, if that fateful day arrives and your PC hard drive crashes, you can restore your music collection without re-ripping dozens of CDs.

Fortunately, there are many applications you can use to get your tunes off your iPod. Some of them are even free

The simplest method for grabbing tunes off of your iPod is also the geekiest. Just enable the "Disk Mode" feature of the iPod from within iTunes, which will allow you to mount the iPod as a hard drive. Then, you can browse the disk using Windows Explorer or the Mac's Finder.

Finally, we’re seeing that people are no longer “surfing” the web. They’re “clipping” it. People are using start pages and personal organizers to filter out what they want to keep top-of-mind. Because of this, understanding the value of widgets and branded utilities is critical to success. Brands can no longer rely on people coming to their websites. Gmailskins adds the following features:

* Change the colour/skin of your inbox.
* Integrate your google homepage alongside your inbox. This allows you to view weather reports, rss feeds, news headlines, flickr recently added, google calendar module etc from your inbox.
* Easily insert images from your Picasa web album in to your emails
* Insert smileys/emoticons and images in to your emails.
* Insert HTML tables and other complex HTML in to your emails.
* Make the navigation (Inbox, Starred, Sent Mail, etc) horizontal.
* Fix the navigation in place so that you don't have to scroll to the top of the page to see it.
* Zebra stripes on mailbox - pretty!
* Change the attachment paperclip (on inbox) to an icon indicating the type of attachment.

* Hide various page elements (invite panel, page footer, your email address from the top right of inbox).

* To access the settings panel you must change the language on your gmail account to EN-US - This is because of how tightly gmailskins integrates in to the Gmail interface. You can change your language back again afterwards and the settings will still be applied, although "your mileage may vary".

Radiohead is not only solely distributing their new album over the net, but enabling consumers to choose their own price.

Choose your own price.

If you work in any intellectual property driven industry, you better think about that for a moment. It may reflect the actual demand model you are about to deal with. As the Net Gens become the dominant demographic in the market, they are more influenced by their peers than institutions, and know if they can't get what they want from institutions they will do it themselves.

Letting businesses choose their own price is a far way away, although I believe inevitable, as we transition to a gift economy, because of the institutionalized irrational selfishness of the corporate individual (feel free to disregard this sentence). But it is very real for consumer markets. Information not only wants to be free, so to does the decisions it informs, which is how information creates value.
