It's true that young people prefer interactive systems to passive ones and that they are generally competent with technology, but it's not true that students today are "expert searchers." In fact, the report calls this "a dangerous myth." Knowing how to use Facebook doesn't make one an Internet search god, and the report concludes that a literature review shows no movement (either good or bad) in young people's information skills over the last several decades. Choosing good search terms is a special problem for younger users.

I attended the Third Thursday event last night, which was held in SF instead of the usual Palo Alto. About 25 people attended, mostly young, impressionable PR and communications folks eager to learn all about social media: specifically, social media press releases, which were the topic for the evening. But what they heard was -- by my lights -- a seriously watered down version of what social media is, or should be, as the backdrop for a discussion about new media press releases.

To the participants: Please, please, please don't talk about audiences when you are theoretically promoting social media. As Jay Rosen has suggested, we are the people formerly known as the audience. Blogging is not just another channel for corporate marketing types to push their messages to markets, eyballs, or audiences. Social media is based on the dynamic of a many-to-many dialogue between people. Yes, people: that's the word that should have been used. Not audience. If you'd like to make a distinction between a company and those outside the company, just remember: they are not an audience for your messages, any more than you are an audience for theirs. The whole point is that the people formerly known at the audience -- the edglings, as I call us -- are participating in the blogosphere, and if individuals within companies want to, they can participate: as individuals. Companies don't blog, or converse: people do.

Finally, as Doc Searls has pointed out, metaphors matter. Drop the old speak: no more "audience", no more third-party writing, no more "wink, wink" complicity in totally false quotes and knowingly working with clients on spin instead of open dialogue. School your clients to do the right thing, not just wrap themselves in a bunch of psychobabble about social interaction with their "communities" without actually adopting a new mindset.

Finally, we’re seeing that people are no longer “surfing” the web. They’re “clipping” it. People are using start pages and personal organizers to filter out what they want to keep top-of-mind. Because of this, understanding the value of widgets and branded utilities is critical to success. Brands can no longer rely on people coming to their websites. They now need to think about providing modules that people can add to their personal pages whether it be iGoogle, Facebook, a blog, Pageflakes, Netvibes, etc.

Wikileaks is developing an uncensorable Wikipedia for untraceable mass document leaking and analysis. Our primary interests are oppressive regimes in Asia, the former Soviet bloc, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, but we also expect to be of assistance to those in the west who wish to reveal unethical behavior in their own governments and corporations. We aim for maximum political impact; this means our interface is identical to Wikipedia and usable by non-technical people. We have received over 1.2 million documents so far from dissident communities and anonymous sources.

We believe that transparency in government activities leads to reduced corruption, better government and stronger democracies. Many governments would benefit from increased scrutiny by the world community, as well as their own people. We believe this scrutiny requires information. Historically that information has been costly - in terms of human life and human rights. Wikileaks will facilitate safety in the ethical leaking movement.

Wikileaks opens leaked documents up to a much more exacting scrutiny than any media organization or intelligence agency could provide. Wikileaks will provide a forum for the entire global community to examine any document for credibility, plausibility, veracity and falsifiability. They will be able to interpret documents and explain their relevance to the public. If a document comes from the Chinese government, the entire Chinese dissident community can freely scrutinize and discuss it; if a document arrives from Iran, the entire Farsi community can analyze it and put it in context. Our first sample analysis is available from the news page, providing a look into the future of what Wikileaks can provide. Of the analysis, Said S. Samatar, the Professor of African History at Rutgers University said, “This is a remarkably well researched and written piece. Informative, lucid and incisive.”

LONDON (Reuters) - It had to happen. A Web site set up to encourage anonymous leaks of controversial government secrets has been exposed before its launch.

Government insiders around the world will be invited to use the site as cover to leak evidence of corruption and injustice. It is meant to be an adaptation of Wikipedia, the popular online encyclopedia, to encourage whistle-blowers to come forward.

Depending entirely on voluntary contributions for its content, http://www.wikileaks.org will officially go live in a few months: instead of the public submitting entries, it is asking officials to publish state documents.

"Wikileaks will be the outlet for every government official, every bureaucrat, every corporate worker, who becomes privy to embarrassing information which the institution wants to hide but the public needs to know."

However, the first major leak at Wikileaks was a textbook example of the viral, or word-of-mouth, marketing that sets the Web buzzing: the site itself was the target.

Subway and Quiznos User-Generated Content Suit

The Subway/Quiznos case hinges on how the District Court of Connecticut interprets two federal laws: the Lanham Act, which dates to the 1940s and centers on trademark rights, and the Communications Decency Act, which was passed in 1996 to safeguard the Internet.

Last spring, Quiznos and iFilm tried to claim they should not be liable for user-generated content because of the Communications Decency Act, which immunizes “providers” of “interactive computer services” from responsibility for user postings on their sites.

Still, a win for Subway would mean that user-generated advertising contests would have to play by new rules. The sponsors of such contests could find themselves in trouble if participants insulted a competitor or made unsubstantiated claims about products, said Sam Bayard, assistant director of the Citizen Media Law Project.
