It's great that we "disapprove" of them in polls, but when push comes to shove, we are allowing them to do whatever they want...and the results are truly sickening.

In Ziegel's case, he spent nearly two years recovering at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas. Once he got out of the hospital, he was unable to hold a job. He anticipated receiving a monthly VA disability check sufficient to cover his small-town lifestyle in Washington, Illinois.

Instead, he got a check for far less than expected. After pressing for answers, Ziegel finally received a letter from the VA that rated his injuries: 80 percent for facial disfigurement, 60 percent for left arm amputation, a mere 10 percent for head trauma and nothing for his left lobe brain injury, right eye blindness and jaw fracture.

Within 48 hours of telling his story to CNN this summer, the Office of then-VA Secretary Jim Nicholson acted on Ziegel's case. The VA changed his head trauma injury, once rated at 10 percent, to traumatic brain injury rated at 100 percent, substantially increasing his monthly disability check.

One of the first social communities I joined was Clipmarks, a social network based upon finding, saving and discussing specific pieces of news and website content. I was hooked immediately-- not only because it allowed me to "clip" and save content from websites better than del.icio.us, but because the entire team at Clipmarks are active participants and really care about the community.

The widget isn't just my profile picture with my last clip and a link to the Clipmarks site, it is a interactive slideshow of all my clips. It's a widget of great value to the user and viewer and is not just to drive traffic to the Clipmarks site, unlike lots of other widgets I've had and seen.

I had the pleasure of attending the Boston TweetUp last night in the North End at Limoncello and then later the VON party at the Roxy. Let me just tell you- my new friends ROCK.

Joe Cascio organized a wonderful dinner for a great group of social media peeps, including Jim Long, known on Twitter as newmediajim. Great food, great conversation, great photos… I’m so glad I was able to join in.

After dinner, most of us headed over to the Roxy for the VON party, where I think I danced more in one night than I ever have in my whole life. That Jeff Pulver. Man can he bust a move. Julia Roy, Jesse Chenard, Amanda Mooney were also cuttin’ a rug on the dance floor. We had a ton of fun and I’m looking forward to future events with my awesome social media friends.

So, I got some really nice responses from my social media buddies about my Halloween costume. Chris Penn took it one step further, though, suggesting that I ask Twitter to replace the little blue bird with one of my photos and a “bring that beat back!” type of message.

I emailed pr[at]twitter.com yesterday and haven’t gotten a response, but I’m holding on to the hope that I could someday be that little bird, telling everyone that Twitter is going to be OK. A girl can dream…

If you want me as your new Twitter bird, maybe you could drop them an email, too. Either way, it’s a fun thought. While you’re at it, tell Johnny Cupcakes to sponsor Julia Roy as well. The girl needs a new tee.

At long last, Forbes Media acquires Clipmarks

Forbes Media announced Wednesday that it has officially acquired Clipmarks.com, a social news site that operates by enabling members to "clip" and share parts of Web sites rather than simply bookmarking them. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Clipmarks CEO Eric Goldstein will stay in his post.

ZIMBABWE has been elected to two intergovernmental committees of Unesco at the 34th General Conference of Unesco in Paris, France.

Zimbabwe was first elected into the International Council of the Programme of Man and Biosphere, which is an intergovernmental committee consisting of 20 members. Together with Madagascar, Mali and Togo, Zimbabwe will represent Africa.

The 人 REN Building

Architecture in China never ceases to amaze me—case in point—the REN Building. Copenhagen’s Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) proposed this eye-catching design over a year ago to coincide with Shanghai’s “Better City, Better Life” 2010 World Expo . The building takes its form from the Chinese character for person 人 (”ren”) and combines two buildings (one symbolic of mind and the other symbolic of body). We love the poetic inspiration that reflects both site and cultural sensitivity.

Are mirrors the best way to deflect asteroids?

Focusing sunlight onto an asteroid with space-based mirrors is the best way to deflect Earth-bound space rocks, a new study finds. The mirrors beat out nuclear blasts and "gravity tractors" in the study, which compared nine different deflection methods.

The method that came out on top was a swarm of mirror-carrying spacecraft. The spacecraft would be launched from Earth to hover near the asteroid and concentrate sunlight onto a point on the asteroid's surface.

To deflect a 20-kilometre asteroid, about the size of the one that wiped out the dinosaurs, it would take the combined work of 5000 mirror spacecraft focusing sunlight on the asteroid for three or more years.

In 1993, Jay Melosh of the University of Arizona in Tucson, US, proposed using one very large mirror deployed by a single spacecraft for this purpose.

Vatican Beatifies 498 Spanish Martyrs

VATICAN CITY (AP) - The Vatican staged its largest mass beatification ceremony ever Sunday, putting 498 victims of religious persecution before and during Spain's civil war on the path to possible sainthood.

The ceremony has drawn criticism from some in Spain who see it as implicit criticism of the current Socialist government as it takes a critical look at the country's civil war past and the fascist dictatorship of Gen. Francisco Franco, which was supported by the Roman Catholic Church.

Spain's 1936-69 civil war pitted an elected, leftist government against right wing forces that rose up under Franco, who went on to win and presided over a nearly 40-year dictatorship staunchly supported by the Catholic Church.

Some in Spain have questioned the timing of the ceremony, coming three days before Parliament is to pass a Socialist-sponsored law seeking to make symbolic amends to victims of the war and of the Franco dictatorship.
