Girls strip searched in US holiday mix up

Two British girls were sent to an orphanage for 30 hours and strip searched after their mother became ill during a holiday in the US.

Gemma Bray, 15, and her 13-year-old sister Katie also had their clothes taken off them and were asked if they had been abused or were suicidal.

Their mother Yvonne Bray of Appledore, Devon, says their human rights were infringed by the authorities.

The Administration for Children's Services in New York has declined to comment on the matter.

"Instead of that they were taken to a orphanage and subjected to the kind of treatment you wouldn't even expect criminals to go through."

The frightened teenagers had their clothes, including their underwear, removed and were issued with a uniform of T-shirt and jeans before being spilt up and given a medical examination.

Photographs were taken and the girls were told they would not be allowed to visit their mother in hospital.

They had to shower in front of strangers.

A religious father put safety pins through the tongues and lips of his two children and slit their mouths with scalpel blades, a court has heard.

The father, from Nigeria, told the boys he inflicted the injuries because God had his tongue cut off in the Bible, a jury at Bradford Crown Court was told.

The boys' injuries were discovered in February 2005 when a school friend of the older boy, now aged 13, noticed bruises on his body during a PE lesson, the court heard.

The boy's younger brother, now aged 11, was questioned and told the school he had been assaulted the previous night when his father swung a pole at him, causing cuts to his fingers.

"A scalpel had been used to slit their lips and inside their mouths. Their father had then sewn them up with a medical kit that he had."

Miss Wigin added that the boy said his father "spoke about God in the Bible having his tongue cut off" as an explanation for why he carried out the injuries.

Europe poses terrorist threat to US

One of the biggest threats to US security may now come from within Europe, US Homeland Security head Michael Chertoff has told the BBC.

He said militant attacks and plots in Europe over recent years had made the US aware of the "real risk that Europe will become a platform for terrorists".

Mr Chertoff said it was likely security checks on travellers from Europe would be increased.

He cited deadly bomb attacks on Madrid and London, and a terror alert affecting UK-US flights in August 2006, as well as "people travelling from South Asia and the Middle East into Europe and carrying out attacks there".

As the fifth anniversary of the creation of his Homeland Security department approaches, Mr Chertoff said the US was now a safer place because of the security strategies that had been adopted.

He said it was important to increase security checks on passengers from Europe - most of whom are currently able to enter the United States without being screened first because of a visa waiver programme.

Four churchgoers posing as City traders funded a life of 'wild extravagance' by conning £3.2million from fellow worshippers, a court heard.

The gang was said to have used their 'shared religious background' to lure more than 1,000 members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church into handing over their life savings.

They promised their alleged victims, including cleaners and 'others in similarly humble jobs', that the money would be invested on their behalf and would triple in as little as six weeks.

Instead, the four used it to rent or buy multi-million-pound flats, Mercedes cars and for holidays in luxury hotels, including a £55,815 stay at Dubai's seven-star Burj al Arab hotel.

The staggering returns promised were so attractive that 'people tended to suspend their judgment', said prosecutor Stephen Winberg. 'The victims were much more ready to believe what they were told because it came from members of the same tight-knit religious community,' he added.

A town in the US state of Louisiana is to be allowed to change its telephone prefix so that residents can avoid a number many associate with the Devil.

Christians in Reeves have been unhappy since the early 1960s about being given the prefix, 666 - traditionally known as the Biblical "number of the beast".

For the next three months, households will be able to change the first three digits of their phone numbers to 749.

Mayor Scott Walker said CenturyTel's decision was "divine intervention".

"It's been a black eye for our town, a stigma," he said.

"I don't think it's anything bad on us, just an image," he added. "We're good Christian people."

Revelation 13:18 states: "If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666."

The fear of the number 666 is known as hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia.

The inheritance of US heiress Paris Hilton looks set to shrink dramatically after her grandfather announced plans to give most of his fortune to charity.

Hotel magnate Barron Hilton, 80, will donate 97% of his $2.3bn (£1.2bn; 1.6bn euros) fortune to the Conrad N Hilton Foundation, set up by his father.

Reports have said that Mr Hilton is embarrassed by the behaviour of his granddaughter.

Mr Hilton will give $1.2bn immediately to a charitable trust that will eventually benefit the foundation.

The rest of the money will follow after his death.

The foundation supports projects that provide clean water in Africa, education for blind children and housing for the mentally ill.

A gunman has opened fire with a rifle in a shopping centre in the US state of Nebraska, killing eight people before fatally shooting himself, police say.

A further five people were wounded - two critically - in the shooting at the Westroads Mall in Omaha.

Police have identified the gunman as Robert Hawkins, 19, from Bellevue, close to Omaha. They said a suicide note had been recovered.

Hawkins struck as the centre was crowded with Christmas shoppers.

Witnesses spoke of shoppers screaming and scrambling to find safe shelter as the gunman struck.

In a statement, President George W Bush - who visited Omaha earlier in the day for a fundraiser - said he was "deeply saddened" by the shootings.

The Supreme Court will consider Americans' right to bear arms early next year for the first time in nearly 70 years.

Witnesses said the gunman fired down on shoppers from a balcony on the third floor of the Von Maur store, using what police said was an SKS rifle to shoot at random.

Teacher Jailed in Sudan following Teddy row

The Foreign Office is attempting to secure the release of a British teacher jailed in Sudan after children in her class named a teddy bear Muhammad.

Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, received 15 days in jail for insulting religion; she will then be deported.

About 300 people protested against Ms Gibbons' actions in Khartoum after Friday prayers.

The teacher's son John, a 25-year-old marketing consultant, told the Daily Mail the family are struggling to take in the punishment.

Mrs Gibbons' son added: "I don't want the verdict to lead to any anti feeling towards Muslims."

About 300 people marched through the streets of Sudanese capital Khartoum in protest against Mrs Gibbons after finishing prayers on Friday.

Watched by police, the marchers walked through the streets waving their fists - one man waving a sword in the air - shouting "Allah is great".

The prison Mrs Gibbons is expected to be held in is mainly used to house women convicted of making and selling alcohol.

A British school teacher has been arrested in Sudan accused of insulting Islam's Prophet, after she allowed her pupils to name a teddy bear Muhammad.

Colleagues of Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, said she made an "innocent mistake" by letting the six and seven-year-olds choose the name.

Ms Gibbons was arrested after several parents made complaints.

A spokesman from the British Embassy in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, said it was unclear whether she had been charged.

Fellow teachers at Khartoum's Unity High School told Reuters news agency they feared for Ms Gibbons' safety after receiving reports that men had started gathering outside the police station where she was being held.

The school's director, Robert Boulos, said: "This is a very sensitive issue. We are very worried about her safety.

"This was a completely innocent mistake. Miss Gibbons would have never wanted to insult Islam."

Milton had no intention of delivering his speech orally. Instead it was distributed via pamphlet, defying the same publication censorship he argued against.

Milton, though a supporter of the Parliament, argued forcefully against the Licensing Order of 1643, noting that such censorship had never been a part of classical Greek and Roman society. The tract is full of biblical and classical references that Milton uses to strengthen his argument. The issue was personal for Milton as he had suffered censorship himself in his efforts to publish several tracts defending divorce (a radical stance at the time and one that met with no favor from the censors).

Church condemns lesbian IVF use

clipper's remarks: There really is no one-size fits all solution here. A child needs a loving, healthy atmosphere to grow up in. I know enough people who grew up in spite of their fathers presence, equally those who grew up in spite of their mothers.
Either way, I don't believe banning people from raising children because of their sexuality is right.

The leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales has condemned plans to make it easier for lesbian couples to use IVF to become parents.

The measures are contained in the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill, which is being debated in the House of Lords on Monday.

He said it "radically undermines the place of the father in a child's life".

MPs have previously called for an end to the right of fertility clinics to refuse treatment to single women and lesbians.

"It is profoundly wrong."

But Ruth Hunt, of gay rights campaign group Stonewall, said the plans did not involve "denigrating the principle of fatherhood".

"This is a very logical and timely step to ensure that a child can have two parents from the moment of conception and that is safeguarded throughout their upbringing," she said.

A UK court has ordered evangelical preacher Gilbert Deya back to Kenya to face five counts of child stealing.

The self-proclaimed bishop of a congregation with 36,000 UK members claimed he could give infertile couples 'miracle babies'

The children's true parentage remains unknown.

It is also unclear how Mr Deya and his wife convinced churchgoers that they were pregnant when they were not and how they believed that they had given birth in backstreet Kenyan clinics.

Mr Deya regards the children as miracles given to him by God for his followers.

"The 'miracle babies' which are happening now in our ministry is beyond a human imagination but it's not something that I can say - I can explain because they are of God and things of God cannot be explained by human beings," he told BBC Radio 4's Face the Facts programme in 2004.

Car crushed by falling cow

An American couple have survived unscathed after their minivan was crushed - by a falling cow.

Charles and Linda Everson were driving back to their hotel when Michelle, a 600lb rodeo cow, landed on their bonnet.

Amazingly, the beast had fallen 200ft from a cliff.

Chelan County fire chief Arnold Bake said the couple missed being killed by a matter of inches in the accident near Manson in Washington State.

The pair, who were visiting the area to celebrate their first wedding anniversary, were taken to hospital but later released.

Unfortunately, Michelle was not so lucky. She had to be put down.

Mr Everson, 49, said he was in shock as he watched the bovine bounce off his battered bonnet.

He told the Detroit Fee Press: "I'm just glad to be alive. It's raining cows out here, man!"

A church whose members cheered a soldier's death as "punishment" for US tolerance of homosexuality has been told to pay $10.9m (£5.2m) in damages.

The Westboro Baptist Church was taken to court by the father of Lance Cpl Matthew Snyder, a marine who died serving in Iraq in March 2006

The church cited its constitutional right to free speech in its defence.

But Albert Snyder's lawyer urged the jury to ensure the damages were high enough to stop the church campaigning.

Members of the church - based in Topeka, Kansas - have denounced homosexuality for years, initially targeting the funerals of Aids victims.

But they later extended their pickets to the funerals of soldiers, who they say are being punished by God because of the US' tolerance of homosexuality .

Albert Snyder sobbed when he heard the verdict.

Members of the church, however, reportedly greeted the verdict with tight-lipped smiles.

"It will take the 4th Circuit of Appeals a few minutes to reverse this silly thing," said Rev Phelps.
