Larry Kart has sent in an interesting post on “The Dark Knight” that deserves better than being buried at the end of that painfully long thread:

Lord knows this party is over, but I’m surprised, now that I’ve seen TDK, that no one (or virtually no one) has mentioned what to me is clearly the most expressive (as in “oppressive”) aspect of the movie: The swooping, “circle the principals” camera work and the similarly obtrusive, “Look schmuck, this is linked to that!” editing, all of which is designed to give the film an air of perpetual stress and emergency,

As an aside, I’d just note that the “circle the principals” move Larry describes has become as ubiquitous in contemporary films as the zooms of the 1970s – to me, it’s just another sign of lazy direction, like Altman’s slow zooms in on a single figure in one of his clothesline ‘scope compositions. You see it in romantic comedies as well as action films.

La Collectionneuse is the story of a triangle of sorts--I would say “love triangle,” but there is no love involved. The characters are too shallow for something as profound as love. I

we see the events in La Collectionneuse directly through the eyes of a male protagonist, in this case, Adrien. Adrien’s voice-over narration reflects his insight into both himself and others, but it is often woefully (and sometimes amusingly) contradicted by the events we see unfold (he assumes that everything is about him). Rohmer’s male protagonists are frequently misguided in their pompous self-assuredness, and Adrien differs only in the sense that he is older and should know better.

while Adrien tries mightily to understand himself and others, he fails, sheepishly returning (as all Rohmer’s “Moral Tales” protagonists do) to the woman he was with originally. One gets the sense that he is not terribly wiser for his experiences, which casts a dark pall over the film.

Lawyers accuse judge of lying, bungling Roman Polanski case

clipper's remarks: The famous film director Roman Polanski fled the US in 1977 because he was charged for statutory rape. Twenty years later, Polanski's lawyer and prosecutors made a deal that would have allowed Polanski to return to the US. Polanski refused the deal because the judge wanted the proceedings televised. Fast forward to now, when HBO releases its Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired documentary which contains this little tidbit. The judge calls the story completely fabricated. Both the defense and prosecuting attorney go on the record calling the judge a liar.

The original defense and prosecuting attorney in the Roman Polanski trial took the unusual step Wednesday of issuing a joint statement that accused a longtime Los Angeles Superior Court judge of lying, and continuing the judicial bungling that has marked the sex scandal since 1977.

Former District Atty. Roger Gunson, the prosecutor in the Polanski case, and Douglas Dalton, the film director's defense attorney, said Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler discussed a deal in 1997 that would allow the director back into the country with the possibility of no jail time. During that meeting, Dalton said in the statement, Fidler made the offer contingent upon the proceedings being televised.

Lost scenes from the sci-fi classic "Metropolis," recently discovered in the archives of a Buenos Aires museum, were shown to journalists for the first time in decades on Thursday.

A long-lost original cut of the 1927 silent film sat for 80 years in a private collection and then in the Museum of Cinema in Buenos Aires, where it was discovered in April with scratched images that hadn't been seen before.

Museum director Paula Felix-Didier said theirs is the only copy of German director Fritz Lang's complete film.

"This is the version Fritz Lang intended," said Martin Koerber, a curator at the Deutsche Kinemathek film museum in Berlin, Germany.

"Metropolis," written by Lang and his actress wife Thea von Harbou, depicts a 21st century world divided between a class of underworld workers and the "thinkers" above who control them.

distributors cut Lang's three-and-a-half-hour masterpiece into the shorter version since viewed by millions worldwide.

'Jewish settler attack' on film

Footage from a video camera handed out by an Israeli human rights group appears to show Jewish settlers beating up Palestinians in the West Bank.

An elderly shepherd, his wife and a nephew said they were attacked by four masked men for allowing their animals to graze near the settlement of Susia.

The rights group, B'Tselem, said the cameras were provided to enable Palestinians to get proof of attacks.

A spokesman for the Israeli police said that an investigation was under way.

So far, no-one has been arrested.

How is childhood like a red balloon? Hou Hsiao-Hsien's Flight of the Red Balloon gives many possible answers.

We watch seven-year-old Simon—played marvelously by Simon Iteanu—meander along Paris sidewalks, his progress as lazy and jaunty as the path of that red balloon above him. His lackadaisical stride stands in stark contrast to the crisscrossing streets and tracks that bind the city; he's not yet imprisoned by the grid-like adult world of hurry and hustle. Under his mop of tousled red hair, his eyes cartoon-wide, this kid has sails open to catch a whim. He'll even shout up at the balloon to come down and play with him.

We know that the weightlessness of Simon's existence, the whimsy in his wonder, will soon end. We sense it when he refuses to welcome the balloon as it descends. We see it in how he's drawn to flashy, mechanized activity, like his sister's PlayStation.

Allegorical dreams are integral to the film's theme. Professor Borg's runaway carriage dream is similar to the dream sequence in Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, signifying the burden of life, guilt, and inescapability of death. The dream is obscure and surreal, as if the mind is in denial of its fate. In contrast, the summer cottage dream is lucid, nostalgic, and melancholy. Professor Borg reluctantly awakens from it with a profound sense of loss and regret. His most unsettling dream occurs in a lecture hall because it is a place that has defined his existence. Having become alienated from his family, and denied his skills, his life, and legacy, are lost. The final dream occurs after he attempts to reunite Evald and Marianne. Recalling a family picnic by the lake, the effect is warm, peaceful, and redemptive. It is a subtly beautiful affirmation of reconciliation and closure.

A Final Cut for "Blade Runner"

After years of rumors about the ending, Scott released a 1992 director's cut in which he removed the Ford narration and the "happy ending" and added the infamous "unicorn" sequence, which suggested that Deckard was a replicant as well -- all how he originally intended the movie to be cut. Most recently, though, a rare version of the film was found in the Warner Bros. archives that was radically different in more ways than can be described here. Confused? Don't be, because Scott and Warner Bros. have now teamed up on a new "Blade Runner: Final Cut" just in time for the film's 25th anniversary. This new "definitive" version, according to Scott, contains added and extended scenes, new and cleaner special effects, and that all-important 5.1 Dolby Digital Audio. And it should be the version you judge the film by.

"Blade Runner: The Final Cut" opens in New York and Los Angeles Oct. 5. It debuts on DVD Dec. 18.
