Just as people are living longer than they did in the past, cats are living longer too. The percentage of cats over 6 years old has almost doubled in the last 10 years and the aged cat population is growing. Within the past 5-10 years, veterinary medicine has seen some significant improvements in treatments for the ailments commonly faced by ageing cats. Like people, cats do not live forever.

The early stages of this decline are so gradual that owners may not notice it. Recognising subtle signs early on can slow the rate of decline, but at the end of the day, ageing and death are natural processes and unlike humans, cats do not seem to fear the end.

(Newser) – McDonald's will soon be faced with an epic decision: Which comes first, the cage-free chicken or the profit margin? The Humane Society plans to press the fast-food behemoth at a shareholder meeting in May to use cage-free eggs, but the fast food giant’s response is anything but certain, Gourmet reports. Caged hens are “arguably the most abused animals in all agribusiness,” the group said.

the entire EU is phasing out cages—which typically give each hen an area the size of a piece of paper—in 2012. Burger King has already done so.

Fake leg ... Mosha the elephant

She was close to death and just seven months old when she was taken in by the Friends of the Asian Elephant hospital (FAE) in Lampang, Thailand, in 2007.

Her leg was blown off when she stepped on a landmine.

Medics feared the worst as she stumbled around on three legs and refused to eat. But her life was saved when she became the first elephant to be fitted with a prosthetic leg.

Dr Therdchai Jivacate, who runs Thailand’s Prostheses Foundation for humans, was the brains behind the idea. He said before making the fake leg in 2007: “If she cannot walk, she is going to die.”

Stumped ... Mosha minus fake limb

His team at the foundation successfully fitted the limb — crafted from plastic, sawdust and metal — and she lives at an orphanage for elephants in the tropical jungle of northern Thailand, near the Cambodian border.

When the evenings get particularly thick with mosquitoes where I live, I sometimes sit out in the yard with my daughters and look up at the fading sky. Before too long, a single bat will usually flit out of the nearby trees and start flying circles around the house, scooping up bugs along the way. We can barely make out the bat’s wings as it takes its laps, a flicker of membranes. And so it was a revelation to spend some time earlier this week with two Brown University biologists, Dan Riskin and Sharon Swartz, watching slow-motion movies of bats in flight. There’s a lot going on up there.

Bats evolved a way to take advantage of the same laws of physics birds use to fly. And many scientists who have studied bat flight in the past have basically treated bats like leathery birds. Yet there’s no reason to assume that this should be so.

Panda attacks Chinese man

A panda at a zoo in southern China attacked a student who snuck into its pen hoping for a cuddle with the endangered bear, state media said on Saturday.

The 20-year-old male student surnamed Liu jumped over the fence at the zoo in the tourist city of Guilin, ignoring warning signs not to, Xinhua news agency said.

"The panda, named Yangyang, was wide awake. Apparently scared by the intruder, he bit at Liu's arms and legs," it quoted an unnamed worker as saying after zoo keepers managed to calm the bear and rescue Liu, the report said.

"Yangyang was so cute and I just wanted to cuddle him," Liu was quoted as saying from his hospital bed. "I didn't expect he would attack."

Scientists believe fewer than 2,000 giant pandas live in the wild in China.
