This Clip has a wealth of information on dealing with an aging and/or dying cat.

Clip Source: www.messybeast.com

Just as people are living longer than they did in the past, cats are living longer too. The percentage of cats over 6 years old has almost doubled in the last 10 years and the aged cat population is growing. Within the past 5-10 years, veterinary medicine has seen some significant improvements in treatments for the ailments commonly faced by ageing cats. Like people, cats do not live forever.

The early stages of this decline are so gradual that owners may not notice it. Recognising subtle signs early on can slow the rate of decline, but at the end of the day, ageing and death are natural processes and unlike humans, cats do not seem to fear the end.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF AGEING?

DO OLD CATS BECOME DISABLED?

HOW CAN I PROLONG MY CAT'S LIFE?

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY OLDER CAT?

YOUR OLDER CAT'S HEALTH

HOW DO I KNOW WHEN IT IS "TIME TO LET GO"?

WHAT IS MY CAT'S LIFE EXPECTANCY AND LIFE QUALITY?

HOME NURSING AND GIVING MEDICATION

FACING THE INEVITABLE

COPING WITH PET BEREAVEMENT

Tags: pets, cats, age, death, medical, health, family

<clipSource>http://www.messybeast.com/towards-end.htm</clipSource>

Humane Society to challenge McDonald's

clipped by: masbury
clipper's remarks: Over use of caged hens - which typically each live in an area the size of a piece of paper.

Clip Source: www.newser.com

McDonald's will soon be faced with an epic decision: Which comes first, the cage-free chicken or the profit margin? The Humane Society plans to press the fast-food behemoth at a shareholder meeting in May to use cage-free eggs, but the fast food giant’s response is anything but certain, Gourmet reports. Caged hens are “arguably the most abused animals in all agribusiness,” the group said.

A recent survey estimated there are about 100 new casualties each year.

The majority of the banned weapons are thought to have been placed by insurgents, most commonly in the south of the country.

FAE staff member Soraida Salwala said: “Mosha should live many long, happy, elephant years.

Clip Source: www.thesun.co.uk

Fake leg ... She was close to death and just seven months old when she was taken in by the
Friends of the Asian Elephant hospital (FAE) in Lampang, Thailand, in 2007.

Her leg was blown off when she

Medics feared the worst as she stumbled around on three legs and refused to
eat. But her life was saved when she became the first elephant to be fitted
with a prosthetic leg.

Dr Therdchai Jivacate, who runs Thailand’s Prostheses Foundation for humans,
was the brains behind the idea. He said before making the fake leg in 2007:
“If she cannot walk, she is going to die.”

Stumped ... His team at the foundation successfully fitted the limb — crafted from
plastic, sawdust and metal — and she lives at an orphanage for elephants in
the tropical jungle of northern Thailand, near the Cambodian border.

Before too long, a single bat will usually flit out of the nearby trees and start flying circles around the house, scooping up bugs along the way. We can barely make out the bat’s wings as it takes its laps, a flicker of membranes. And so it was a revelation to spend some time earlier this week with two Brown University biologists, Dan Riskin and Sharon Swartz, watching slow-motion movies of bats in flight. There’s a lot going on up there.

Bats evolved a way to take advantage of the same laws of physics birds use to fly. And many scientists who have studied bat flight in the past have basically treated bats like leathery birds. Yet there’s no reason to assume that this should be so.

<clipSource>http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/loom/2009/03/19/how-to-be-a-bat-life-in-motion/</clipSource>

Panda attacks Chinese man

clipped by: valann 47

Clip Source: uk.reuters.com

A panda at a zoo in southern China attacked a student who snuck into its pen hoping for a cuddle with the endangered bear, state media said on Saturday.

The 20-year-old male student surnamed Liu jumped over the fence at the zoo in the tourist city of Guilin, ignoring warning signs not to, Xinhua news agency said.

"The panda, named Yangyang, was wide awake. Apparently scared by the intruder, he bit at Liu's arms and legs," it quoted an unnamed worker as saying after zoo keepers managed to calm the bear and rescue Liu, the report said.

"Yangyang was so cute and I just wanted to cuddle him," Liu was quoted as saying from his hospital bed. "I didn't expect he would attack."

ANIMAL rights groups are up in arms over an annual festival in Peru that
serves up hundreds of fried CATS to locals.

The 'Gastronomical Festival of the Cat' – dubbed the 'Massacre of the
Moggies' – sees townsfolk in Canete, near Lima, feast on the fluffy
pets for two days.

A PETA spokesman said: "“If Peruvians really eat poor old Moggy because
they think his meat cures bronchitis, that’s about as bizarre as it gets,
although remember that Asians eat monkey bits thinking that will cure their
impotence and even Europeans butcher poor old Bessie the cow or Henny Penny
the hen, because they see them as nothing more than a bit of nourishment.

“Having toured slaughterhouses for dogs in Taiwan, horses in Texas, and
chickens and cows in Europe, PETA’s staff says the last thing we need to do
is add yet another poor animal to the list of those being frightened and
slaughtered for a taste.”

Court: US can block mad cow testing

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration can prohibit meat packers from testing their animals for mad cow disease, a federal appeals court said Friday.

The dispute pits the Agriculture Department, which tests about 1 percent of cows for the potentially deadly disease, against a Kansas meat packer that wants to test all its animals.

Larger meat packers opposed such testing. And science doesn't show mental parity between great apes and human adults. What it shows, as the group's president acknowledges, is that great apes "experience an emotional and intellectual conscience similar to that of human children." Accordingly, the Spanish proposal doesn't treat apes like you or me. It treats them like "humans of limited capacity, such as children or those who are mentally incompetent and are afforded guardians or caretakers to represent their interests."

GAP's mission statement says great apes are entitled to rights based on their "morally significant characteristics."

they

enjoy a rich emotional and cultural existence in which they experience emotions such as fear, anxiety and happiness. But in each case the slower end of Snowball's range seemed to correlate with the tempo of the music. "When the music tempo was slow, his tempo range included slow dancing. When the music was fast, his tempo range didn’t include these slower tempos," Patel explains.

A statistical check on these variations showed that the correlation between the music’s rhythm and Snowball’s slower movements was very unlikely to have happened by chance. "To us, this shows that he really does have tempo sensitivity, and is not just ‘doing his own thing’ at some preferred tempo," says Patel.
Via Andrew Sullivan

Clip Source: www.nature.com

Genuine ‘dancing’ — the ability to perceive and move in time with a beat – would also require that Snowball adjust his movements to match different rhythmic speeds, or tempos.

Patel and colleagues videoed Snowball ‘dancing’ in one of his favourite spots, on the back of an armchair in the office of Bird Lovers Only. They altered the tempo of the music in small steps, and studied whether Snowball stayed in synch. You can see videos of Snowball dancing to a range of tempos here, here and here .

This wasn’t as easy as it might sound, because Snowball didn’t ‘dance’ continuously during the music, and sometimes he didn’t get into the groove at all. So it was important to check whether the episodes of apparent synchrony could be down to pure chance.

Tags: statistics, teaching-statistics, significance

<clipSource>http://www.nature.com/news/2008/080625/full/news.2008.914.html</clipSource>
