Shed in a windstorm

We have a pretty bad storm going on today. Lots of power outages and damage. This picture was a shed at my Mom's house...
The winds are pretty much 30-40mph with gusts over 60mph (there has even been one reported gust over 80mph...hurricane strength). To make matters worse, we have lake effect snow coming and going...creating whiteouts with the wind.
When I left my house this morning, the only damage I had thus far were some down tree limbs and a piece of trim blown off the house. Hopefully there won't be more surprises tonight.

2008 Postage Stamp-Sized Mini Calendar

Figure out what day any date or month in 2008 lands on with the postage stamp-sized Super Minimalist Micro Calendar, pictured here. It looks like a meaningless grid of numbers and letters, until you learn how to read it:

The first column contains numbers for the months of the year. The middle gives the weekday on which the first falls. The last column gives the date of the first Sunday of that month. With this data, you can easily figure out the rest of the dates that you need to know.

The first line is interpreted: January and April and July start on a Tuesday and their first Sunday falls on the 6th -- so you know that the other Sundays are 13, 20, 27. Once you know the Sundays, you can get to the Mondays by adding 1, Tuesdays by adding 2, and so on.

Try Feevy to Create a Dynamic Blogroll

I came across this site called Feevy which lets you create a widget containing a list of blogs to put on your blog side bar. See the Feevy in my side bar. Kind of a different way to create a blogroll (although it does take up a lot of space). It lists the blogs which I like as well as a preview of their most recent post.

I just received an email from ShareBuilder. They are offering a $25 holiday bonus for opening up a custodial account for a child. Here are the highlights:

One thing I am not sure of...you may have to have an account with ShareBuilder yourself. I get these emails because I opened an account when they had a similar offer (but not for childs accounts) where I got a $50 bonus for investing $50. Worth a try, though, to see if they let you open the custodial account on its own.

I actually came across this reading the Buffalo News this weekend (old fashioned style reading). In the Money Matters section they had a short article from MarketWatch.com titled 'Get Free Language Lessons'.

I checked out the website that they referenced and was quite impressed. It is a self-paced system (I sure can't commit to it daily...but once a week...maybe). You can take a test for it to gauge what level lesson you should start at; or for someone like myself (who took Latin in highschool) just start at the beginner level. The beginner level has some nice activities to get you going. There are also 'crash courses' if you're hopping on the plane tomorrow. You can even download popular phrases to your mp3 player. There are a wide variety of languages including:

French
Spanish
German
Italian
Chinese
Portugese
Greek

MANSON, Wash. (AP) — Charles and Linda Everson were driving back to their hotel when their minivan was struck by a falling object — a 600-pound cow. The Eversons were unhurt but the cow, which had fallen off a cliff, had to be euthanized.

The year-old cow fell about 200 feet from the cliff and landed on the hood of the couple's minivan, causing heavy damage.

A Chelan County fire chief, Arnold Baker, said the couple missed being killed by a matter of inches in the accident Sunday on a highway near Manson.

The Eversons, visiting the area from their home in Westland, Mich., to celebrate their first wedding anniversary, were checked at Lake Chelan Community Hospital as a precaution.

Everson, 49, said he didn't see the cow falling and didn't know what happened until afterward.

He said he kept repeating: "I don't believe this. I don't believe this."

They download as pdf's. The site adds a page to the book with their website and a sponsor (sometimes Verizon). Other than that, the books are well formatted and convert easily using the Adobe Reader for Palm OS so I can read them on my Palm PDA.

The site requires an email address from a registered domain; you won't be able to use hotmail or yahoo mail. Once your account is created you can set up a download queue of all the books you ultimately want to download. There is a download limit of 3 books per day.

Our 100 Favorite Blogs

As we were compiling the massive undertakings that are the Top 100 Undiscovered and Classic Web Sites lists, we couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing. There were plenty of Web apps and sites devoted to video, news, shopping, and tech, and all—yet somehow, even after compiling 200 top sites, it still felt as if we weren't giving an accurate picture of our Web-browsing habits.

And then it occurred to us. Blogs.

Sure, we had chosen a few blogs for the Undiscovered and Classics list, but let's face it, in the past few years, weblogs have become one of (if not the) most dominant aspects in our daily Web-surfing routine. So we set forth on the task of rounding up the PC Magazine staff's favorite blogs. Perhaps surprisingly, the hardest part of the task wasn't finding 100 blogs that our staff members liked, but rather whittling our original choices down to a mere 100.
