A Japanese naval vessel shot down a ballistic missile Monday over the Pacific Ocean, the first US ally to successfully carry out such a test. Japan plans to install the US-built interceptor system on four of its warships, in addition to land-based missile systems to defend itself from possible attack from neighboring North Korea.

Japan has stepped up military cooperation with the US since North Korea test-fired a long-range missile over Japan in 1998. Monday's test is a reminder of tensions in Northeast Asia, including the flash point of Taiwan, over which China claims sovereignty and which it has targeted with hundreds of missiles. Analysts say Japan's interceptor missiles could be used to defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack.

The target was fired at 12:05 p.m. local time and shot down about 100 miles above the ocean at 12:11 p.m.

SULAIMANIYA, Iraq (Reuters) - Turkish warplanes targeting Kurdish rebels bombed northern Iraq on Sunday, killing one woman and forcing hundreds to flee, local officials said.

"The Turkish military said it had attacked targets of the separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) with the approval of U.S. occupying forces in Iraq. The United States said only that it had been informed in advance of the operation.

Turkish ground forces also shelled areas where the rebels were based, an army statement said. Turkey's NTV television said 50 aircraft had taken part in the three-hour operation."

Hillier said Canadian troops are making progress in training Afghans to take over the lead in combat mission and rebuild the southern part of the country, but he reiterated that it could take 10 to 15 years to train senior military leaders who would bring stability to the region.

"I think most Canadians, living in the incredible country that we have, don't always see all the complexities of trying to rebuild a country," he said, noting Afghanistan endured "25 years of destruction."

"But I think they're increasingly aware that you just don't do that overnight."

There are approximately 2,500 Canadian troops in Afghanistan, most in the volatile south. Seventy-one Canadian soldiers and a Canadian diplomat have been killed in the country since 2002.

The Canadian military plans to buy a fleet of remote-controlled aircraft to patrol the Arctic, an official told CBC News.

Lt.-Col. Wade Williams said the drones, known as unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, will be equipped with cameras, radar, radios, electronic sensors and possibly even weapons.

They will fly day-long surveillance flights over water, land and ice while being piloted by an air crew stationed on the ground at a control station that could be thousands of kilometres away.

"I think UAVs will go a long way to alleviating the requirement to have constant manned aircraft in the air," said Williams, who is with the military's UAV program.

"They can do a lot of the eyes and ears missions that are being done today with manned aircraft."

Russian Bombers Challenge Canada’s Air Defences

Recently Russian planes have made several forays either to the edge or, according to some reports, even inside Canadian airspace without permission. There are also unconfirmed reports that on several occasions the pilots of those planes refused to identify themselves when directed to do so by military personnel.

During the first such incident, in August, Canadian forces CF-18 fighter jets were scrambled from the Quebec base however witnesses say that by the time they arrived in the area the Russian plans had already reached Labrador. Since that time six F18s have been temporarily assigned to 5 Wing in order to respond to any potential infractions by the Russian military.

In response to the latest incidents, Lt. Col. Brian Bowerman, acting wing commander for the squadron, said he believes the Russian bombers have been testing North American air defence response, and although he does not consider their actions hostile the Canadian forces are indeed on alert.

Canada's defence spending has hit its highest level since the Second World War.

Dollar for dollar, Canada now outspends NATO partners Spain, Turkey, the Netherlands, Greece, Poland, Norway and Denmark, among others. Canada's spending is so substantial that it outspends the lowest 12 NATO members combined, according to the study.

According to the report, by the end of this fiscal year, in March 2008, Canada will have spent $7.2 billion on the full cost of military missions related to Afghanistan. That figure, which tracks spending from 2001, includes salaries, equipment depreciation, attrition and other costs. If those numbers are removed then the cost of the Afghan mission to March 2008 is $3.3 billion.

Defence Department supporters say that more money needs to be spent on the military if Canada is going to play a significant role on the world stage and deal in the future with other failed states similar to Afghanistan.

"Because the government gets a percentage of all mining projects, it's in their interests to ensure a project has smooth sailing ... there won't be problems over environmental impacts, labour impacts, community impacts, and that makes for easy mining. But the downside is that military dictatorships are often unstable internally, doing things like moving its capitol into the jungle."

Reliant on good relations with his military joint venture partners, billionaire Friedland has been a defender of the regime, preaching a philosophy of engagement with the military as an agent of political reform.

Mysterious shaking rattles Central Coast this morning

A spokesman from Edwards Air Force Base says right now, conditions are ideal to hear a sonic boom or any noise coming from large aircraft.

The spokesman adds, winds coming in off the ocean help to carry that sound.

Mysterious shaking rattled the Central Coast late Wednesday morning.

It happened around 11:00 and was felt all the way from Santa Maria to Morro Bay.

Some said it felt like a small earthquake. Others thought it may be another sonic boom.

Caltech and seismic experts at UC Santa Barbara says there was no earthquake in the region during that timeframe, except for a couple small ones in the Paso Robles area.

They agree that it was most likely caused by military flight testing.

There are several military facilities that test supersonic aircraft, including Vandenberg Air Force Base, Lemoore Naval Air Station, and Edwards Air Force Base. None could confirm they tested their aircraft during that time.

Hundreds of you called in during the last mysterious shaking in July. At that time, Edwards Air Force Base says new F-22 Raptor training missions probably caused that sonic boom.

Raptors are known for the distinctive sound they make when they go supersonic.

Burma's Oppression Linked to China

We are very close to the situation developing in Burma, not just geographically but through friends and colleagues who are working there. The oppression by the military in Burma could not continue without the support of China. China is Burma's biggest trading partner because China wants Burma's natural resources and also a land corridor to the Andaman Sea and Indian Ocean.

Several groups have spoken out in favor of a boycott of the Beijing Olympics in 2008 for a variety of reasons. One such organization is Reporters without Borders which monitors the restraints on journalism in China and the arrest and imprisonment of reporters there.

Perhaps it is time for other groups to push for a Beijing boycott to put pressure on China to live up to its international obligations and stop support for tyranny and oppression in Burma.

US Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) has announced the conduct of major war games under Vigilant Shield 2008 (VS-08).

Yet, VS-08, which includes a massive deployment of the US Air Force resembles a war-time air scenario rather than an anti-terrorist drill. The VS-08 war games extend over the entire North American shelf. Canadian territory is also involved through Canada's participation in NORAD. (See Nazemroaya, October 2007)

These war games are being conducted at an important historical crossroads, amidst mounting US pressures and threats to actually declare a "real war" on Iran.

VS-08 is predicated on the doctrine of preemptive warfare, with a vie to protecting the Homeland. The war games are coordinated with anti-terrorist drills directed against presumed Islamic terrorists.

Federal maritime, aeronautical and ground search and rescue components were involved in the operation.

Nineteen people were taken ashore by boat and transferred to hospital by land after participating in a mock disaster exercise off the western coast of Newfoundland.

The scenario provided an opportunity to test the Major Maritime Disaster Plan.

Two people remained in hospital on Friday after a mock disaster involving rescue and military personnel turned dangerous off the western coast of Newfoundland.

Coast Guard spokesperson Brian Stone said the training exercise, which involved a staged evacuation of a ferry, was interrupted when 25 people had to be rescued from a covered lifeboat after it filled with fumes.

About 48 different agencies and 400 people took part in the exercise. Feedback from all participating agencies will be gathered and analyzed in an effort to detect any flaws in their operating procedures.
