Life Preservers for Polar Bears On Sinking Arctic Ice

As the climate crisis mounts and Arctic icebergs slip away, polar bears are suffering starvation, population declines, and drowning as they must swim further and further to find food. Seeking to raise awareness for the endangered species’ plight, ADDI Concepts has taken wildlife preservation literally by designing a life-vest for displaced polar bears struggling to stay afloat as their homes sink into the sea.

Polar bears are facing a bleak future as Arctic icebergs continue to melt and ancient shelfs of ice collapse. The species inhabits only the Arctic Ocean and its surrounding areas, and they and can hunt consistently only from sea ice. ADDI Concepts conceived of their polar bear life jackets not as a solution for the endangered species, but as a means to increase awareness about global warming and inspire action. Their portfolio states: “A dog who lives most of its days carried around in an expensive handbag doesn’t need a camouflage hoodie and a small cap over its ears. There are a few other [creatures] who we should give at least the same attention”

The design group has also conceived of a bulletproof vest for Bengal tigers, whose numbers have decreased by 95% since 1910 due to illegal hunting.

In some larger-scale organic operations, because herbicides cannot be sprayed on fields to remove weeds, operators need to run tractors with special machinery over crop beds to remove weeds.

This mechanical removal of weeds can sometimes require many passes over a field in a tractor, using high amounts of gasoline or diesel in the process.

Also, there is a debate on whether organic agriculture can keep up with the world’s food demand. However, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization suggest that it is possible, and will in fact be necessary, to further promote organic agriculture in order to help small-scale farmers in other nations maintain their livelihoods, reverse the land degradation that has resulted from conventional farming and halt other environmental issues, such as dead zones in oceans and river deltas due to agricultural chemical contamination.

The Schools Chemical Cleanout Campaign (SC3) aims to ensure that all schools are free from hazards associated with mismanaged chemicals. SC3 gives K through 12 schools information and tools to responsibly manage chemicals.

Everyone from school administrators to chemical suppliers can help. Many successful chemical management programs involve a variety of partners that can include state, tribal and local environmental and health agencies, school district personnel, industry, waste handlers and universities.

The U.S. EPA is building a network with others who care about this issue to raise national awareness of the potential chemical dangers in K through 12 schools, facilitate chemical cleanouts and prevent future problems. These partners include other federal agencies, state agencies, teachers’ associations, school administrator organizations, chemical suppliers and industry leaders.

Over 17,000 species threatened by extinction

The Switzerland-based group surveyed 47,677 animals and plants for this year's "Red List" of endangered species, determining that 17,291 of them are at risk of extinction.

More than one in five of all known mammals, over a quarter of reptiles and 70 percent of plants are under threat, according to the survey, which featured over 2,800 new species compared with 2008.

"These results are just the tip of the iceberg," said Craig Hilton-Taylor, who manages the list. He said many more species that have yet to be assessed could also be under serious threat.

"This one we caught right before it went off the planet, but other species surely we didn't catch in time," Mendelson told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

"When you name a new species you're attached to it, and when that species disappears so quickly it's impossible not to have feelings associated with that," he said. "I'm pretty sad to be honest, really sad."

So what is it that you’re recycling when you’re recycling your everyday soda bottle? It’s a substance made up of chains of “ethylene terephthalate,” or polyethylene terephthalate. That’s a mouthful, so scientists have shortened it to “PETE” or “PET” and that’s much easier. PET is also the substance that makes up “polyester” fabric, so consider that when you’re recycling that soda bottle. You could be wearing that soda bottle someday as a shirt!

Here’s a short pretty animation on Aniboom about the PET recycling process. There’s a bit of artistic license but it’s a good start. Remember to recycle!
