Companies developing genetically modified crops risk creating the biggest environmental disaster "of all time", Prince Charles has warned.

GM crops were damaging Earth's soil and were an experiment "gone seriously wrong"

A future reliance on corporations to mass-produce food would drive millions of farmers off their land

huge multi-national corporations involved in developing genetically modified foods were conducting a "gigantic experiment with nature and the whole of humanity which has gone seriously wrong".

Relying on "gigantic corporations" for food would end in "absolute disaster", he warned.

"That would be the absolute destruction of everything... and the classic way of ensuring there is no food in the future."

He said GM developers might think they would be successful by having "one form of clever genetic engineering after another", but he believed "that will be guaranteed to cause the biggest disaster environmentally of all time".

Greenhouse gas emissions from the European Union dropped 7.7 percent from 1990 to 2006, even as the use of carbon dioxide-intensive coal increased, the European Environment Agency said Friday

If the EU maintains this pace, it would very nearly fulfill its Kyoto commitment to reduce greenhouse gases by eight percent compared to 1990 levels before 2012, the Copenhagen-based Agency said in an annual report

The emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), produced mainly by the burning of fossil fuels, remained stable across the EU's 27 nations in 2006 compared to the year before.

The net reduction in 2006 of greenhouse gases for the EU-27 was due mainly to lower emission of nitrous oxide produced by chemical plants, the report concluded.

But heavier use of coal for power and heat production resulted in an increase of 15.4 million tonnes of CO2 from this sector in 2006.

Under the Kyoto rules, the EU must report the emissions for each greenhouse gas from every member state on an annual basis.

BONN, Germany (AFP) — The Earth's natural resources must be shared more equally between rich and poor nations, Germany's environment minister said Monday at the start of a UN biodiversity conference.

"It is a question of principle, a question of justice," he said. "The developing countries are right to speak of "biopiracy", when the industrialised world use their resources without authorisation and without paying a penny," he said.

"Sixteen years after the Rio Summit, life on earth is at a crucial crossroads", Gabriel told delegates.

Gabriel pointed to the fact that the current rate of extinction of species is between 100 and 1,000 times the natural rate of extinction.

One in four mammals, one bird in eight, one third of all amphibians and 70 percent of plants are under threat.

"The loss of diversity of life on earth will continue "as long as it is easier to make money from the destruction of nature than protect it," he said.

ST. PETERSBURG, January 22 (RIA Novosti) - Temperatures on Earth have stabilized in the past decade, and the planet should brace itself for a new Ice Age rather than global warming, a Russian scientist said in an interview with RIA Novosti Tuesday.

He also said that in 2008, global temperatures would drop slightly, rather than rise, due to unprecedentedly low solar radiation in the past 30 years, and would continue decreasing even if industrial emissions of carbon dioxide reach record levels.

By 2041, solar activity will reach its minimum according to a 200-year cycle, and a deep cooling period will hit the Earth approximately in 2055-2060. It will last for about 45-65 years, the scientist added.

Mankind will face serious economic, social, and demographic consequences of the coming Ice Age because it will directly affect more than 80% of the earth's population, the scientist concluded.

MORE than 50 schoolgirls were taken to hospital after fainting and screaming in what education chiefs in Senegal are calling "collective hysteria".

"The phenomenon started in one of the classrooms of the fifth standard girls," said Adina Aidara, principal of Lamine Guèye Secondary School.

"Three students, all girls, fell down. The same phenomenon was repeated 30 minutes later during recess – this time involving high schoolers. We called the fire department to evacuate the victims."

Global food system 'must change'

The global agriculture system will have to change radically if the world is to avoid future environmental and social problems, a report has warned.

The findings were published by the International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD), an intergovernmental body that involved more than 400 scientists and 30 governments.

"These issues are hunger and poverty; rural livelihoods; nutrition and human health.

The authors projected that the global demand for food was set to double in the next 25-50 years, primarily in developing nations.

"The key point is how do we address these issues in a way that is environmentally, socially and economically sustainable?"

It recommended a fundamental rethink of agricultural knowledge, science and technology, in order to achieve a sustainable global food system.

"Agriculture is far more than just production of food, and that is what we have to recognise."

What is Quinoa?

It is a healthy whole grain.

When compared to popular grains like rice and oats, quinoa is relatively unknown. However, as the health benefits of whole grains are becoming more and more well known, Quinoa is getting more attention—and use.

Quinoa is a small, light-colored round grain, similar in appearance to sesame seeds. Most quinoa must be rinsed before cooking, to remove the bitter residue of saponins, a plant-defense that wards off insects. Botanists are now developing saponin-free strains of quinoa, to eliminate this minor annoyance to the enjoyment of quinoa.

The Incas considered quinoa sacred, and called it "chisaya mama" or "mother of all grains"; and it was the custom of the Inca emperor to sow the first quinoa seeds of the season as 'golden implements'.

Quinoa (keen-wah) is from the Andes, where it has long been cultivated by the Inca. It is associated more with Swiss chard and beets rather than a “true” grain.

Bulldozers tear down giant religious teapot

A religious commune in Malaysia's Muslim heartland that worshipped a bizarre collection of structures including a giant teapot, vase and umbrella was being torn down yesterday.

About 40 workers with bulldozers and lorries destroyed the "subversive" teapot and other symbols of the pan-religious Sky Kingdom, in Terengannu state. An assembly hall, a concrete boat and a temple-like structure that was under construction were also demolished. About 30 members of the commune watched but did not intervene.

Members and visitors to the commune believe that water from the teapot, which poured into the giant vase, held purifying powers. They follow the teaching of Ariffin Mohammed, 65, better known as Ayah ("Master") Pin, who holds that every religion is equally valid and that anyone can find his or her own path to God. His settlement has been a popular destination for Muslim, Chinese and Indian Malaysians, as well as foreign tourists.
