Israel unleashes 'skunk' on protests

THE Palestinian protesters massed at the fence expected tear gas and rubber bullets; what they got instead was a putrid yellow wind, Israel's newest weapon against West Bank demonstrators.

The noxious mist, which Israeli police refer to as "skunk," was used for the first time earlier this month, when a truck-mounted cannon sprayed it over the heads of protesters, sending them racing down the hillside, retching and tearing off their shirts to try to escape the stench.

The Israeli border police called on them to disperse through loudspeakers, warning them they were near a "closed military zone."

"It's the start of a change in tactics in dealing with crowd control and dispersing violent demonstrations and violent instances," Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

"It protects the protesters because it doesn't require us to use tear gas and rubber bullets."

Colombian military used Red Cross emblem in rescue

Colombian military intelligence used the Red Cross emblem in a rescue operation in which leftist guerrillas were duped into handing over 15 hostages, according to unpublished photographs and video viewed by CNN.

Photographs of the Colombian military intelligence-led team that spearheaded the rescue, shown to CNN by a confidential military source, show one man wearing a bib with the Red Cross symbol.

Such a use of the Red Cross emblem could constitute a "war crime" under the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law and could endanger humanitarian workers in the future, according to international legal expert Mark Ellis, executive director of the International Bar Association.

Court Backs Bush on Military Detentions

President Bush has the legal power to order the indefinite military detentions of civilians captured in the United States, the federal appeals court in Richmond, Va., ruled on Tuesday in a fractured 5-to-4 decision.

The decision was a victory for the Bush administration, which had maintained that a 2001 Congressional authorization to use military force after the Sept. 11 attacks granted the president the power to detain people living in the United States.

The court effectively reversed a divided three-judge panel of its own members, which ruled last year that the government lacked the power to detain civilians legally in the United States as enemy combatants. That panel ordered the government either to charge Mr. Marri or to release him. The case is likely to reach the Supreme Court.

Disconfirmations Disconfirmed: Saddam Had Nuke Program

The media have been telling us for years that Saddam had no WMD, so "Bush's War": was based on a "lie." And those who believed Saddam did have WMD or WMD progrmas were delusional.

But today, on July 6, 2008, the Associated Press reports that

Saddam Hussein had a nuclear program

At the Tuwaitha nuclear complex just south of Baghdad

Which included 550 metric tons (over 1.2 million pounds) of "yellowcake", or concentrated uranium

And multiple devices that could be used in a nuclear weapon.

The AP does not say alleged nuclear program. It does not add "according to military experts." It simply says "Saddam Hussein's nuclear program."

That's pretty big news, isn't it?

Americans are the most patriotic people on the planet, according to researchers at the University of Chicago's National Opinion Research Center who quantified and compared the national sense of pride in 34 countries.

There is "a very good argument" for sending an international force into Zimbabwe if diplomatic pressure fails to sweep away President Robert Mugabe, Archbishop Desmond Tutu said Sunday, as Mugabe was set to be inaugurated for a new term as Zimbabwe's president.

"That crisis has to be resolved sooner rather than later and yes, I think that a very good argument can be made for having an international force to restore peace" under UN auspices, he said.

Now that Senator Barack Obama has become the Democrats' nominee for President of the United States, to the cheers of the media at home and abroad, he has written a letter to the Secretary of Defense, in a tone as if he is already President, addressing one of his subordinates.

The letter ends: "I look forward to your swift response."

Because of the widely publicized statistic that suicide rates among American troops have gone up, Senator Obama says he wants the Secretary of Defense to tell him, swiftly:

What has been widely publicized in the media is that suicides among American troops have gone up. What has not been widely publicized is that this higher suicide rate is still not as high as the suicide rate among demographically comparable civilians.

Moreover, this is not the first time that military service overseas has been portrayed in the media as the cause of problems that are worse in the civilian population at home. Continued...

The Pentagon's Iraq war funds, which are used to pay for food and ammunition for soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, will run out if Congress does not quickly pass a supplemental funding bill, said Office of Management and Budget Director Jim Nussle

The White House has threatened to veto a supplemental war funding bill, which is scheduled for a vote in the Senate on Thursday, because it includes $50 billion in domestic spending that has nothing to do with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The domestic spending add-ons were made by both Democratic and Republican members of Congress.

"You can disagree about the politics of the war, but once you put people in harm's way, you ought to make sure they have their salary, their Kevlar, their maps, the bullets that they need," he said.

The leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, has been arrested, according to media reports quoting the country's defence ministry.

Masri, also known as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, was detained in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul,

The US military in Iraq said it was currently looking into the reports.

In an hour-long audio tape broadcast last month, he purportedly called for renewed attacks on US troops and noted the recent announcement that 4,000 had died in Iraq.

"We must celebrate this event in our special way, and make the defeated Bush join us in this celebration," he said.

Saddam had terrorist training camps within Iraq.

Saddam provided support to terrorists that only a state could provide by issuing passports to known terrorists so they could move about freely.

the Pentagon Papers clearly show that Saddam had direct ties to the EIJ. Saddam was both financing and training EIJ members from as far back as 1990.
