CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chavez said Sunday that Russia will help Venezuela develop nuclear energy — a move likely to raise U.S. concerns over increasingly close cooperation between Caracas and Moscow.

Chavez said he accepted an offer from Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin for assistance in building a nuclear reactor.

"Russia is ready to support Venezuela in the development of nuclear energy with peaceful purposes and we already have a commission working on it," Chavez said. "We are interested in developing nuclear energy."

Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah stated the entire land of Palestine was holy and belonged solely to the Arabs, in a speech held on Friday in honor of the "al-Quds Day," .

"Palestine, from the sea to the river, is the property of Arabs and Palestinians and no one has the right to give up even a single grain of earth or one stone, because every grain of the land is holy. The entire land must be returned to its rightful owners, " Nasrallah said on a day commemorating Muslim claims to the holy city of Jerusalem.

"Our lands will be liberated not by begging the US or the West, but with will, determination, resistance and sacrifices made by the region's peoples," he said.

Democrats give Ahmadinejad reason to smile

Democrat activists this week gave Ahmadinejad a huge gift by sabotaging a major bipartisan anti-Iran rally. More important to them than Iran, apparently, was the opportunity to marginalize popular Republican vice-presidential candidate Governor Sarah Palin.

In an effort to maintain an appearance of Jewish unity against the evil of Iran, the organizers were forced to cave; Palin was given the boot. Game over. The Democrats won.

This political gamesmanship is not going to sit well with most Jewish and pro-Israel voters-including Democrats and Independents-who take the Iranian threat seriously. The same day as the rally, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency warned that Iran could be hiding certain nuclear activities, and estimated that Iran could go nuclear in just six months.

Israel unleashes 'skunk' on protests

THE Palestinian protesters massed at the fence expected tear gas and rubber bullets; what they got instead was a putrid yellow wind, Israel's newest weapon against West Bank demonstrators.

The noxious mist, which Israeli police refer to as "skunk," was used for the first time earlier this month, when a truck-mounted cannon sprayed it over the heads of protesters, sending them racing down the hillside, retching and tearing off their shirts to try to escape the stench.

The Israeli border police called on them to disperse through loudspeakers, warning them they were near a "closed military zone."

"It's the start of a change in tactics in dealing with crowd control and dispersing violent demonstrations and violent instances," Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

"It protects the protesters because it doesn't require us to use tear gas and rubber bullets."

A day after Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced he would depart political life, top rival Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that Israel should get rid of its current governing coalition and go straight to early elections.

Polls show the Likud Party's Netanyahu—a former prime minister who takes a hard line on territorial concessions to the Arabs—would most likely win such a race if it were held today.

"This is a government that has come to the end of its road," Netanyahu told Israel Radio on Thursday. "It doesn't make any difference who heads Kadima, they are all part to a string of failures by this government."

"The right thing to do when the prime minister goes is ... to let the people choose who will lead them and whoever is chosen, he is the one who will need to put together a government," Netanyahu said.

Hamas to raise price for Shalit

HAMAS has pledged to heed lessons from Israel's prisoner swap with Hezbollah by demanding a higher price for captured soldier Gilad Shalit, held in the Gaza Strip.

The militant regime, which rules Gaza, has said Israel had shown it was no longer able to dictate terms during negotiations, and immediately moved to set its own terms on protracted talks about Shalit's release.

Israeli officials have spent days trying to downplay the aftermath of the swap, in which many commentators on both sides of the Lebanese border have claimed Israeli leaders did poorly.

Hamas negotiators in Gaza, meanwhile, were demanding that the same German negotiator who brokered the Hezbollah-Israel deal also play a role in floundering talks about a trade for Shalit.

Israel makes arrests in alleged plot against Bush

Israel accused six Arabs on Friday of trying to set up an al Qaeda cell in Israel and said one of them had proposed attacking helicopters used during a visit by President George W. Bush.

Israel's Shin Bet counter-intelligence agency said one of the suspects had used his mobile phone to film helicopters at a sports stadium in Jerusalem that was used as a landing site for Bush's delegation.

The Shin Bet said the men had met several times at Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque, seeking to organize a local al Qaeda network. The agency said computers seized from several of the suspects contained bomb-making manuals.

Earlier this month, Israel indicted two of its Bedouin Arab citizens for links to al Qaeda and for planning attacks inside the Jewish state.

Americans are the most patriotic people on the planet, according to researchers at the University of Chicago's National Opinion Research Center who quantified and compared the national sense of pride in 34 countries.

PM Ehud Olmert's cabinet voted 22-3 to approve the proposed exchange of five Hizbullah terrorists for kidnapped IDF reservists Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser, who Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said are probably dead.
