While the world's politicians argue in Copenhagen, some scientists are speaking out at an alternative "sceptics' conference."

, including Professor Henrik Svensmark, a physicist at the Danish National Space Center in Copenhagen, who said the recent warming period was caused by solar activity.

Svensmark said that the last time the world experienced such high temperatures, during the medieval warming period, the Sun and the Earth were in a similar cycle.

Professor Nils-Axel Morner, a geologist from Stockholm University, said sea-level rise has also been exaggerated by the "climate alarmists" using computer models.

He said observational data from lake sediments, coast lines and trees show sea levels have remained stable.

Firms Run by Clinton Pollster Received $5.97M in Stimulus Money

Mark Penn, who worked as Hillary Clinton's pollster during her 2008 presidential run, reportedly received $5.97 million from the $787 billion stimulus package so he could preserve three jobs at his public relations firm.

The firm has gained attention for securing a contract to work on a campaign advertising the nation's switch from analog to digital television. The Hill reported that $2.8 million of that contract was given to Penn's polling firm, Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates.

The firm said it was awarded a "competitive bid contract" in 2009 to support the Federal Communications Commission's initiative to "educate and advertise the congressionally mandated switch to digital television."

Republicans have blasted the use of federal stimulus dollars, claiming the money has gone to many projects that have little or nothing to do with job creation.

Obama administration predicts $30B loss on auto bailout

confirmed in an interview late today that the administration's forecast is that it will lose $30 billion on its auto investments -- but that's down from an earlier estimate of $44 billion.

"The real news is the projected loss came down to $30 billion from $44 billion," Sperling said, noting that auto sales have improved ahead of what many analysts had forecast.

Saving General Motors and Chrysler saved hundreds of thousands of jobs, President Barack Obama said today.

The Treasury Department has also injected $13.5 billion into auto finance company GMAC and now owns a 35.4 percent stake. It is not clear if the government predicts it will lose any of that stake.

The agenda-driven policies being pushed in Copenhagen won't change the weather, but they would change our economy for the worse.

Our representatives in Copenhagen should remember that good environmental policymaking is about weighing real-world costs and benefits -- not pursuing a political agenda.

Unlike the proposals China and India offered prior to Copenhagen -- which actually allow them to increase their emissions -- President Obama's proposal calls for serious cuts in our own long-term carbon emissions. Meeting such targets would require Congress to pass its cap-and-tax plans, which will result in job losses and higher energy costs (as Obama admitted during the campaign). That's not exactly what most Americans are hoping for these days. And as public opposition continues to stall Congress's cap-and-tax legislation, Environmental Protection Agency bureaucrats plan to regulate carbon emissions themselves, doing an end run around the American people.

Bam's whiny blame game

The other day, I wrote that President Obama has "run out of both charm and ideas."

To judge from the string of whoppers in his dreary jobs speech yesterday, he's also run out of facts. And he's still whining about the problems he inherited and blaming Republicans.

The most egregious example came when Obama said yesterday the $700 billion bank-bailout fund, or TARP, was "launched hastily under the last administration" and was "flawed."

George Bush was in the White House, but Democrats controlled both houses of Congress. Obama himself, as a senator, voted for the bailout in October 2008.

it was John McCain who rushed back to Washington after the first version failed and tried to get involved to reshape it.

The record is clear: The $700 billion bailout was crafted on a bipartisan basis, with Obama's support and encouragement, and he has controlled most of the money. For him to now claim otherwise is disgraceful.

Egypt building iron wall on Gaza border to stop smuggling

Egypt has begun the construction of a massive iron wall along its border with the Gaza Strip, in a bid to shut down smuggling tunnels into the territory. The wall will be nine to 10 kilometers long, and will go 20 to 30 meters into the ground,

The new plan is the latest move by Egypt to step up its counter-smuggling efforts. Although some progress had been made, the smuggling market in Gaza still flourishes.

Egyptian forces demolish tunnels or fill them with gas almost every week, often with people still inside them, and Palestinian casualties in the tunnels have been steadily rising.

The tunnels also allow people to cross in and out of the Strip, including terrorists who linked up with pro-Al-Qaida groups in Gaza and tried to carry out attacks in Egypt, defense sources said.

During the hot months of July-Sept and the cold months of Dec- Feb. our utility bills are still near $400. a month. No matter what *they* say, our energy bills will never go down unless we cut our utilities OFF!!! The more we conserve, the more revenue they lose so the more they raise the rates. It's that simple.

If healthcare reform covers Viagra, it should cover abortion services, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) said yesterday.

Boxer suggested there was a double standard underlying proposals to restrict abortion coverage. Under those amendments, women would have to buy separate policies, known as "riders," if they wanted insurance for abortions.

"The men who have brought us this don't single out a procedure that's used by a man, or a drug that is used by a man, that involves his reproductive health care and say they have to get a special rider," Boxer said on the Senate floor.

"There's nothing in this amendment that says if a man some days wants to buy Viagra, for example, that his pharmaceutical coverage cannot cover it, that he has to buy a rider. I wouldn't support that," she said.

It makes sense that the NEA and teachers' unions would not support anything that would send children to private schools. The public education system is in such rapid decline that no thinking person wants their child there and no politician or wealthy person who can afford a private school would do otherwise. And the public schools that DO have some good teachers are losing them because of the stress and work load.

• $14.6 billion from nursing homes that treat seniors; and
• $7.7 billion from hospice care.

Proponents of these cuts say benefits will be restored by the capture of money lost in Medicare through waste, fraud and abuse. Unfortunately, the Congressional Budget Office found that the bill will only save $1.5 billion over 10 years, far less than what will be needed. The result will be a reduction in benefits.

California doping our youths

I was horrified to read recently that it is increasingly common in California to treat children diagnosed with Attention- Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) with marijuana. California voters passed a law allowing doctors to recommend medical marijuana to their patients, including those under the age of 18. The law allows doctors to recommend marijuana "for any ... illness for which marijuana provides relief." Under that broad umbrella, doctors are pushing pot to treat all kinds of maladies, including ADHD.

Truly, this is horrifying. ADHD is described as a neurological disorder that prevents children from focusing on a specific task. In essence, people with ADHD have difficulty with self-regulation and self-motivation, owing to problems with distractibility, organization and prioritization.

Pelosi Endorses ‘Global’ Tax on Stocks, Bonds, and other Financial Transactions

Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) endorsed the idea of a “global” tax on stock trades and other financial transactions, saying the estimated $150 billion in annual revenue from such a tax could be used to help fund more stimulus spending.

The House speaker said that a transaction tax could be imposed in conjunction with congressional efforts to divert funds from the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), with funds from both going to fund a second stimulus spending package. (The first stimulus bill, $789-billion, was signed into law by President Barack Obama on Feb. 13, 2009.)

The tax idea, the brainchild of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, would mean that all major financial centers – Asia, the EU, U.S., and U.K. – would all have to pass a similar transaction tax to avoid disadvantaging one country’s stock exchange.

Dems cut Medicare Home Health Services to fund uninsured

clipper's remarks: This will definitely effect me and my household. For 20+ yrs. I have cared for my elderly family members. With my MIL she could afford to have someone come in and help me and sit with her while I ran errands or took a break. She had Home Health Care aids from the hospital (paid partially by Medicare) come several times to check on her and help with bed sores. My Dad had to be in a nursing home and Medicare helped. My Mom is now with me and I depend on the CNA's and Eldercare Services to help me with bathing. The beds, wheelchairs, etc....were affordable with the Medicare coverage. My Mom will also lose her Medicare Advantage.

So...what are we to do with our elderly? If Mr. Baucus' mother is receiving benefits from Medicare and other government services, then shame on him. On their salaries, surely they can afford to take care of their own parents.

Over the weekend, the Senate cut a key Medicare service aimed at invalids in an attempt to find the money to pay for ObamaCare. On a 53-41 vote, Senate Democrats cut $43 billion from home health-care services. Democrats insisted that they were cutting waste and abuse, but the end result will be less care for seniors. The New York Times reports on the vote:

Republicans voted against the cuts, saying they would hurt some of the nation’s most vulnerable citizens. Most Democrats supported the cutbacks, saying they would eliminate waste and inefficiency in home care.

Mr. Baucus, a principal author of the health care bill, noted that his mother was receiving home health care and said he would not do anything to hurt beneficiaries.

“We are reducing overpayments,” Mr. Baucus said. “We are rooting out fraud. We are getting the waste out. The savings go back in Medicare and extend the solvency of the trust fund.”
