In all honesty, we no longer feel that the processes of our site are producing a unique, high quality blend of content. Instead, the magical blending of diverse topics on the Clipmarks home page has seemed to dissolve into a battleground for extremely hostile politically oriented users who are overwhelming the rest of the site. Because of this we are working on making some fundamental changes to the way the Clipmarks site works. We will do our best to make changes that improve the site and will continue to iterate until we are comfortable that it is just right.

Tags: clipmarks

<clipSource>http://clipmarks.wordpress.com/2008/09/04/shaking-things-up-on-clipmarkscom/</clipSource>

the myth of nation-state

clipped by: pascual
clipper's remarks: syndicate

Clip Source: www.project-syndicate.org

This fall, thousands of college students will be taught a myth presented as fact. Though the origin of this myth is cloudy, science has proven its falsity, and a globalized world has rendered it anachronistic. Based on a 16th-century set of precepts compiled for young gentlemen by Jesuit instructors, the Rules of Civility were one of the earliest and most powerful forces to shape America's first president....

Most of the rules are concerned with details of etiquette, offering pointers on such issues as how to dress, walk, eat in public and address one's superiors. But in the introduction to the newly published Rules of Civility: The 110 Precepts That Guided Our First President in War and Peace, Brookhiser warns against dismissing the maxims as "mere" etiquette. "The rules address moral issues, but they address them indirectly," [he] writes. "They seek to form the inner man (or boy) by shaping the outer."

Clip Source: www.npr.org

1. The fact that the Olympics are taking place in London? No. The ancient Maya civilization, from Central America, had a special calendar that was mind-blowingly accurate. And it predicted that the end of the human life cycle was on December 21st, 2012, the winter solstice. The Mayans were also good at math and astrology(they accurately predicted an eclipse that occurred hundred of years later). So people are guessing that they were right about the end of the world thing, too. Something else that has gotten scientists curious is that there are some major astronomical things happening in 2012. Apart from the occasional eclipse and comet, the entire solar system is supposed to pass through the center of our galaxy, something that happens only once every 26,000 years. And, there’s a risk of our planet’s poles switching. Sounds crazy, but scientists say this has already happened. Also, the Indian calendar, the Kali Yuga, ends at about the same time.

Tags: mistery, maya, world

<clipSource>http://listverse.com/bizarre/10-more-unsolved-mysteries/</clipSource>

Torture Chambers - The Christianising of Europe

clipped by: AcesLucky
clipper's remarks: The Pope, leading the way of torture, and the history of Christianity. This short quiz is a way to find out which dialect of American English you speak.

Different regional accents become more prevalent in countries at different times throughout the years for various socio-economic and geographical reasons. These accents come to be perceived as "neutral" or "accent-less" by the majority during these times. For a while, the American dialect sometimes called "Standard Midwestern" has dominated but, like accents themselves, this "standard" constantly evolves.

Recently, the spoken aspects of American English have trended westward along with the population center of America. Many features distinct to Northeastern accents (think NYC, Boston) are being replaced in popularity with those from Western accents (think LA) across America. This shift tends to be more prominent the younger the speaker is.

Clip Source: www.gotoquiz.com

What American accent do you have?

To most Americans, an accent is something that only other people have, those other people usually being in New York, Boston, and the South. And of those other people, half of the ones you meet will swear they "don't have an accent."

Well, strictly speaking, the only way to not have an accent is to not speak. If you're from anywhere in the USA you have an accent (which may or may not be the accent of the place you're from). Go through this short quiz and you'll find out just which accent that is.

Tags: america, speech, accent, dialect, linguistics, quiz, fun, northeast, west, vowels

<clipSource>http://www.gotoquiz.com/what_american_accent_do_you_have</clipSource>

Missing 2-Headed Turtle

clipped by: Turtle

Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

When Sean Casey called the police on Sunday to report that a nameless two-headed turtle had been kidnapped, the officer had him repeat the complaint two or three times.

The police arrived several hours later and took a stolen property report. it reads.

No one I know has got it right.

A woman, while at the
funeral of her own mother, met a guy whom she did
not know. She thought this
guy was amazing. She believed him to be her
dream guy so much, that she fell
in love with him right there, but never
asked for his number and could not
find him. A few days later she killed

her sister.

Question: What is her
motive for killing her sister?

[Give this some thought before you answer, see
answer below]

.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Answer:
She was hoping
the guy would appear at the funeral again. If you
answered this correctly,
you think like a psychopath. This was a test by
a famous American
Psychologist used to test if one has the same
mentality as a killer.
Many
arrested serial killers took part in the test and answered the
question
correctly.
