To say that language is not innate is to say that there is no difference between my granddaughter, a rock and a rabbit. In other words, if you take a rock, a rabbit and my granddaughter and put them in a community where people are talking English, they'll all learn English. If people believe that, then they believe that language is not innate.

Sibiu is like an insistent image of the whole EU. We sun ourselves in the upper town, like heritage theme parks with its with churches and palaces, the reminders of the long cultural history of the continent, and avert our eyes from the lower town, where the people actually live.

In this context, criticism of bad conditions in America assumes particular significance. It works like a television screen in the living room. Europe soaks up anything critical of the USA: books, news items, documentaries and feature films. Our eyes are drawn to the moving pictures. But this seems to mean that we stop seeing our own living room.

The emerging European self-image is not a conspiracy orchestrated from Brussels. Rather, it is a grass roots expression of will concerning how Europeans wish to see their continent. This identity construct also accommodates political energy. The problem is the shaky assumption underpinning it: that Europe is so much fairer than the USA.

This is a particularly nasty breed, being, as it is, a word meant to sound something like "deterrence" whilst meaning "threat". Your comments are welcome.

Brown must act on US rendition flights, say MPs

"Questions have been raised about 170 possible CIA rendition flights through the UK," the group says. "The government does not appear to have independent records to indicate whether these were or were not rendition flights."

Roger Smith, the director of Justice, the British section of the International Commission of Jurists, says in a letter to Douglas Alexander, the transport secretary, that the UN's joint committee on human rights has concluded there is a reasonable suspicion that aircraft passing through the UK may have been carrying suspects to countries where they risked being tortured.
